In this series film star Tobey McGuire (The Cider House Rules, Plesantville) stars as Devon O'Grady a young man whose idealistic life as a Harvard Law student is shattered forever when he finds out that his emotionally distant and verbally abusive mother has passed away after suffering a stroke. This realization sends him on a journey of self-discovery and self-affirmation when the reading of her will reveals one shocking secret after another. The most shocking of all... That Devon is adopted. that he was not her son. Devon only has one clue as to whom his birth parents are, and that is a hand-written, yet unsigned note and a map of the country that exclaims that Devon must make his way from Boston across the country to New Mexico where it says he'll "find his true self"
In this series we go along with Devon on his journey across the country, across the world and through the proccess of finding out who he is both biologically and otherwise. Along for the ride is Devon's idealistic and somewhat niave, yet brillant nonetheless girlfriend Shelia whose own family life is anything but perfect.
Along their journey Devon and Shelia meet a country drifter and hitchiker whose life philosophies seem both odd and intriquing to Devon and Shelia and whose presence creates both conflicts and laughs.
Also appearing in the series are Shelia's neroutic and anything but functional family including Betty an over-the-hill and very washed-up actress who still thinks that she's the number one attraction. Her new step-father Russell a man whose only care in the world is the millions of dollars that he keeps making from his many ex-wives, all of whom pay him allimony, and whose detest for his current bried is anything but hidden. Her biological brother Clarke, a swarmy and anything but sensitive Lawyer at one of Boston's last profitable law firms. and lastly his on-again-off-again girlfriend Sasha who only cares about marrying a lawyer and who never seems to be around when he really needs her.
