Nice to see an upset with "Crash" winning best picture.

On a completley different note:

Hey is it me, or did anyone else think that Heath Ledger looked like Gary Oldman tonight?

There were only two huge surprises for me, and they both sucked! I could have used a surprise in the supporting actress category! But anyway, like last year, I predicted 16 of the 24 correctly.

I am so sad Brokeback didn't win Best Picture :( I was really hoping for it.

Oh well...congrats to Crash, though :)

I'm really glad that Reese Witherspoon won. I just wish that Joaquin won. He became Johnny Cash.

I'm wondering, is this the first ever time that the "big six" awards all came from different movies? I just checked the list of winners and the six major categories all had winners from different movies:

Best Picture - Crash
Best Directing - Brokeback Mountain (Ang Lee)
Best Actor - Capote (Philip Seymour Hoffman)
Best Actress - Walk the Line (Reese Witherspoon)
Best Supporting Actor - Syriana (George Clooney)
Best Supporting Actress - The Constant Gardener (Rachel Weisz)

She was fantastic as June Carter. Joaquin was robbed. I really shouldn't say that though since I didn't see Capote.

He was a little bland, but I have seen worse. Whoopi comes to mind. His televised skits were pretty funny though.

I definitely recommend Capote. I was rooting equally for both of them, so I'm not disappointed with that category.

According to the polls at Yahoo!, the two biggest upsets were in Best Picture and Best Actor. The majority also thought that Jake Gyllenhaal was the favorite to win best supporting actor.

His televised skits were pretty funny though.yes whoopi and jack lemmon were the 2 worst oscar hosts ever im big fans of both of them but as oscar hosts they sucked big time as for john stewart i think he was trying so hard to give his fans the type of humour they are so used to seeing from him on the daily show while at the same time trying not break too much with oscar traditon and it came out as kind of a mess he tried awfully hard though

The Best Actor part surprises me, because it seemed that Hoffman was the favorite for a few weeks now.

I kind of figured Hoffman would get it since he won the Golden Globe and the winner of that most of the time will win the Academy Award, although that doesn't happen all the time.

Joaquin also won the Globe, but once Philip won the SAG Award, it seemed like the Oscar was in the bag for him.

Well, according to the Yahoo! poll, most people predicted Joaquin Phoenix to win.

After checking, yes, that happened in 1952 and 1956. So tonight's incident was the first time in 50 years! It did not happen in those other three years that you mentioned as I am talking about a different winner for all SIX of those categories. In those three other years that you mention, the best picture and best director came from different movies, but at least one movie won a multiple award for each of those six categories. For example:

2002: Best Picture Chicago also won for Best Supporting Actress (Catherine Zeta-Jones).

2000: Best Picture Gladiator also won for Best Actor (Russell Crowe).

1967: Best Picture In the Heat of the Night also won for Best Actor (Rod Steiger).

Sorry for the big letters, but...

I AM SO ****ING HAPPY FOR REESE WITHERSPOON!!!!!! party:  :woohoo:

I've been a fan of hers ever since I saw her in Legally Blonde in 2001 and I've been keeping up with her career since then. She's done so well performing in a variety of roles and until she played June Carter in Walk the Line, I thought she was very underrated. I mean, it could've been anyone portraying June Carter, but Reese did such an amazing job with it. She conveyed such emotion and even though I knew nothing about the real June Carter, Reese made me feel like I knew her all along. And she's a great role model...she never fails to speak her mind and she never sugar-coats anything. I totally shared in her excitement when she got up there to make her acceptance speech.

Anyway, YAY FOR HER!!

I was really surprised that Crash won over Brokeback Mountain for Best Picture, since everyone and their moms predicted that Brokeback would win. I feel bad for those people, but it still did win a good deal of awards, including Best Director. And if Crash is as good as everyone says it is, then I am happy that it won the most prestigious award of the night. :D

Now I MUST watch both Crash and Brokeback Mountain. Yay for awesome movies.

Oh yeah...people are gonna hate me for this...but I'm really glad that that rap song from Hustle and Flow won Best Song. The performance and the acceptance speech was laughable, IMO, but it's a first for the rap world to win such an honor, and I'm happy for it. It added some diversity to the category.

It was staring me in the face.

So it was only 52 and 56.
That is pretty rare then.

No, it was the second time that a rap artist won for best song. Eminem won it a few years back for his song from the movie 8 Mile. Barbara Streisand presented that award and she gave a wonderful reaction when she opened and saw the winner. She seemed really happy for Eminem and the other songwriter who won. It was as if she too was expecting the award to go to another "typical" song and she really seemed genuinely happy that it went to Eminem.

I'm so happy for Reese Witherspoon, and Crash. This is the first time that the Academy and I agreed on the best picture in years. I was going back and forth between who I wanted between Charlize, and Reese, but since Charlize had already won for Monster in 2003, I was glad for Reese. She did an amazing job in WTL. I kind of wish they'd have given one to Charlize too though. She was so amazing in North Country. I agree with you Irene about Joaquin not winning. That kind of sucks. It also made me laugh when that stupid Hustle & Flow piece of **** song won, but oh well, I'm just glad my choice won in the main category. It was also cool to see March of The Penguins win for best documentary. Great film!!!

I'm also glad that "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" won Best Song. I mean, it's not the greatest song in the world but think about what kind of a movie it came from and what the song is actually about. The performance would have been so much better if Terrence Howard performed it with Taraji Henson. And honestly, for the academy to vote in favor of that song, especially given the content of the song, is amazing to me.

A good article from Wikipedia on the disparity of the 78th Academy Award winners:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/78th_Academy_Awards

-----------------
The awards were unusually divided; for the first time in 58 years, no film won more than three awards, with Brokeback Mountain, Crash, King Kong, and Memoirs of a Geisha each receiving that many. Crash was the first Best Picture winner since Rocky 29 years earlier to win only three awards; it was also the first Best Picture winner since Chariots of Fire 24 years earlier to not win for its directing nor for any of its performers. For the first time in 49 years, Best Picture, Best Director and the four acting awards went to six different films; and for the first time ever, none of these films won for cinematography either. King Kong and Memoirs of a Geisha became the first films since The Bad and the Beautiful 53 years earlier to win (or tie for) the most awards without being nominated for Best Picture.

For the first time in 44 years, each of the acting winners was a first-time nominee. With Philip Seymour Hoffman winning for his performance as Truman Capote, and Reese Witherspoon honored for her role as June Carter, it marked the fifth time that both lead acting awards went to performers playing real people. Ang Lee became the first Asian director to be honored. Paul Haggis was the evening's only multiple winner, with awards for producing and writing Crash. March of the Penguins was the first nature documentary in 35 years (since The Hellstrom Chronicle in 1971) to win the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.
