View Full Version : Who here will be watching the Oscars on Sunday night??

I can tell you who probably won't be watching them... me. The Oscars use to be something I enjoyed watching, until I saw what bad taste the people who make the deciding votes can have in movies. One example of bad taste happened in 1998, when Shakespeare In Love beat out Saving Private Ryan for best picture. That was a major WTF kind of moment!! That was the point where my interest in the show really started going on a rapid decline. Last year was the worst though, when The Passion didn't get any major nominations, which in my opinion, was one of the biggest injustices in Oscar history!! The fact that Jim Caviezel didn't get a best actor nomination, was a crying shame. Anyway, I may tape the Oscars just incase any of my choices pull off major upsets, but I will not be watching the program otherwise. What about you all?
This is off topic, and really has nothing to do with anything, but has anyone here ever noticed that The Pirates of The Carribean, and The Passion have the exact same initials?? TPOTC. Iv'e always found that to be kind of strange.

I'll probably check them out, no plans this week anyway.

Yes, and I can't wait. Even though it's almost a guarantee my favorite (Catherine Keener) won't win, I'm still excited to watch them.

I'll watch. It's a tradition
I'll watch, but not all of it. I have to get up early for work Monday morning.
I really don't know why they just don't have the Oscars on a Friday or Saturday night. Why Sunday?

I'll watch some of it although I'm sure the movies I want to win won't. I agree with you 100% about Shakespeare In Love beating Saving Private Ryan. I still can't believe that happened. :ohno:

I'll watch, I just hope some of these celebs don't get on a soapbox and start preaching to me.

Yes I will probably watch it even if it is not as good as it use to be. I love watching awards show though. There is only a few that I hope wins anyway.

Unfortunately, with Jon Stewart as this years host, I'm sure there will be plenty of that. Of course, it will be in a "joking" way, so that makes it okay. I just hope Sean Penn and Michael Moore aren't there. That would really suck!!

I know. I was only able to get through half of Shakespeare In Love myself. It was even more of a dreadful experience, then the time I tried sitting through the second most nominated film of all time, The English Patient. What a nightmare that was!!

That was another film that didn't deserve it. Fargo was a much better picture that year.

Yea I don't like that either. Whoopi is the worst when it comes to hosts. I still like Billy Crystal the best. .

The English Patient made me want to stick a pencil in my eye. I felt like Elaine on the episode of Seinfeld, where everyone loved the movie but her.

I didn't like Whoopi as host either. I thought she was pretty boring, and her jokes were lame. I think I'm one of the few people in the world who actually thought David Letterman did a good job. He seemed to kind of make a mockery of the show, which I thought was hilarious!! Didn't he even do stupid pet tricks during the broadcast??

 Yep, I felt the exact same way. It's ridiculous that that's the second most nominated film ever!!

I thought Dave was okay. I liked Steve Martin too.

I'd like to see Jay Leno host the Oscars. Jerry Seinfeld might be good too.

I'm not too sure about Leno as host, but I agree with you on Jerry Seinfeld. I'm surprised he hasn't hosted yet in all honesty. I also think Ellen Degeneres, and Craig Ferguson would be good candidates for future hosts.

I really agree about Ellen. Carl Reiner was on her show yesterday and asked her if she would consider hosting next year, but she seemed rather hesitant about it.

Ellen would be good. Didnt she host an awards show not too long ago? I forget what it was though...
I'll be watching the Oscars, though I dont have strong opinions on most catagories. I mostly watch just because.
The one thing that constantly bothers me about awards shows is that they have rehearsals and everything, and you would think someone in the room would know how to pronounce peoples names correctly. Big pet peev of mine.

It was the Emmy's that she hosted a couple years ago. She did a really good job too.

Fargo was a good movie, but I thought Slingblade was the best movie that year. The fact that it got only one nomination for best actor, is just another example of the Academy's stupidity

Stuff like that happens sometimes but at least the surprises make it worthwhile to watch it.
I'll be watching on Sunday Night. I love Oscar night.

Well, I would, but I have plans tonight so I'm taping it. I've had these plans way before I knew the Oscars were tonight. I'll avoid all media until I get to watch it tomorrow!!
One thing I won't be watching is the pre-show, like they have on E. I can't stand when the stars are asked "Who are you wearing?" Who gives a crap if you're wearing Ralph Lauren, or Vera Wang, or whoever? And the gift bags they're all getting each are priced at $100,000!! You got people still living in trailers on the Gulf Coast and stars get all this crap. Hey, how about donating some of this stuff? I'm sure they don't need alot of it. I mean I love awards shows but the extras get so ridiculous.
OK, I'll get off my soapbox.
I'm rooting for George!!

I'm with you Mel - like the Olympics, the judging and "scandals" just took all the fun out of it for me the past few years.
Sounds like Crash should win, but it'll be the PC Bareback Mountain. Everyone knows how I feel about both subjects, but just isn't interesting to me this year. Will probably fire up the TVo and catch up on The Apprentice and other shows I missed this past week.
I used to like the red carpet portion, but even that gets lame after a while. Don't even get me started on Joan and Melissa Rivers and the others that do the interviewing. All slobbering over each other - it's a wonder the gowns are stained with drool by the time they take their seats.
Too many award shows now.........BOOOOOOOOORRRRRINNNNNNNNNNNNNG!!

Not sure if anyone cares, but you can go here (http://www.oscar.com/sweepstakes/index.html) to register and predict the Oscar winners. There's a chance to win prizes, but I mostly just do it for fun to see how many I get correct.

I actually was bored last night, so I started watching. After about 15 minutes though, I got bored with the show, turned it off, and just taped it. I'm glad there were a few surprises this year. Like LucyCompanyPhan mentioned, the surprises can be good since they make the show unpredictable, and the show sure did turn out pretty unpredictable this year for sure!!
