I am kinda glad to see Mariah not sweeping like people predicted. Mimi was a great comeback for her, but the album really wasn't all that special, a few really good singles and a couple tight album cuts doesn't make a Grammy-worthy record. For female r&b artists, Mary J. Blige has at least 4 albums that I'd consider better than Mimi, including The Breakthrough and for female pop artists, Gwen's album put Mimi to shame last year. L.A.M.B. is the pop/r&b album Mariah should, but never will make. Mimi was a big album but it wasn't exactly a fantastic work of art.

I can see Dr. Jazz puke: over the Album of The Year winner right now. Bono mentioned that's the 2nd time they won that award. The first time was when Sign O The Times didn't win!!!

I would've liked to see Mariah win it. She had a great comeback year. Winning the AOTY Grammy would've put a great cap on it.

Hey, count me in with Dr. Jazz, I AM A HUGE U2 FAN!!!!!!! and they deserve it for always having the artistic talent and coming up with great material. I remember watching the Grammys when "Joshua Tree" was nominated. That was an awesome night for them!!!!! Deja Vu!!!!!!!

even though I am not a rap fan, I am shocked Kanye lost. I wonder if he didn't win based on a backlash over his "I'm GOING to win because I DESERVE it" ego. Mariah didn't really stand a chance because Mimi is not that impressive an album, Gwen's album easily had the upper hand between the two because her cd was consistant and fun and there was a little something for everyone on that record, Mariah basically just recorded a formulaic album that had a few good tracks and sold remarkably well.

I'm not surprised Kanye didn't win AOTY. I definitely didn't expect him to. Late Registration didn't get the universal raves that College Dropout got, so if that didn't win last year, he wasn't gonna win it for an almost-as-good duplicate album a year later. For a rap album to win it'll have to have a certain specialness to it, like the Lauryn Hill and Outkast albums had, where it wasn't solely a basic hip hop album.

Unspectacular pop albums have won in the past, from Lionel's Cant Slow Down to Celine's Falling Into You, so if they won, I disagree that Mariah didn't stand a chance because her album was unimpressive.

I thought Mariah deserved to win more awards, and I also thought Gwen should've won too.

Aside from return of Sly, definately one of the worst grammys in years IMO. Didn't U2 win awards for that album last year?! I was glad to see Stevie win some awards and I also felt sorry for Mariah this year. She put out her best album in YEARS. I would rather see the Starland Vocal Band win over U2

Yeah, the highlight was Sly's appearance. I thought it was fascinating, between the outfit and the hair, and that he played a couple of minutes and then said "peace, I'm out." That was just fascinating to me. He's been away so long that you forget how influential he is. I read on other message boards people were saying he didn't look so great, but I looked at it like, he's been out of the public eye so long, just seeing him on stage was the ultimate. Though the tribute had a lot to be desired. What was Ciara of all people doing up there?

I guess that's true, but IMO, between the two "pop albums" to choose from, I think L.A.M.B. was vastly superior and deserved to win more than Mimi would've, Gwen really let herself have fun with that record and it's totally a labor of love and it almost feels like a Janet or Prince record with the number of different genres on just one record. Mariah's album was decent, but it was L.A.M.B. I kept coming back to, from Eve and Andre 3000 to the guys from New Order, Gwen was really allowed to let loose solo and do what she wanted to do and have fun in the process, I think her cd put Mimi to shame and should've won between the two pop albums.

I am not a big U2 fan, but I don't see why the album won, it got decent reviews, but most reviews I recall reading said it was vastly inferior to their last album. U2 has a number of great songs (I loved Bono and Mary J's "One") but I don't think they are the end-all, be-all the way the Grammy committee views them to be. Like Vashti said, The Joshua Tree was a GREAT record (easily their best), but Sign O' The Times was even better.

Did anyone recognize PATRICE RUSHEN on the organ playing during the Sly Stone performance???? Awesome performer herself. but I think I am the only one who didn't like this part of the show. He didn't stay very long, and I could barely hear him sing, I could hear the others sing. It was disappointing to me. I am a child of the 70's and to see him for such a short time, it was a shame. U2 IS AWESOME. They have class. To recognize the others in their album win is just a classy move. Winning album of the year hardly ever has anything to do with how many hits the album produced, etc. Anyone remember Paul Simon winning for "Graceland"???? Everyone thought it was gonna be Janet Jackson for "Control" because it was theeee album of the year in sales, hits, reviews, etc.
To hear Kanye West "rap" that he better win this year, or whatever he was complaining abt during his performance, is so low. Begging/demanding a grammy is pathetic. Even if he is "rapping" or "singing" his statement.

You're not the only one, that segment definitely could have been better than it was, but I just looked at the positive side of it, that a legendary musician like Sly Stone came out of hiding, if only for a brief moment. The microphones weren't working great, but I actually think him jamming for a couple of minutes then splitting was a cool move, added more spice to his aura, if that makes any sense.

Bono also did that when Joshua Tree won over Sign O The Times, mentioning something about Prince being more than just a "great song and dance man." He probably did it because in the back of his mind he knew Prince deserved that win.

out of curiosity, what caused Sly's sudden disappearing act? Judging from his appearence on the Grammy's, he is still a vibrant entertainer and if he wanted to record a comeback album, he likely could be very successful at it.

Which is my point. U2 are a group of classy artists. They always acknowledge others, their greatness, their talent, etc. There are so many artists who are all abt THEMSELVES. They believe THEY DESERVE this or that. U2 continues to believe they are only creating music for the love of it and whether they win any accolades for it or not, doesn't mean anything to them. Just the fans. Too many artists out there that are in it just for the $$$$, the bling:rolleyes: the ME FACTOR.

I'm not sure. I was reading somewhere that he just no longer had a desire to be in the spotlight. He's also had issues with drugs that would affect him in terms of showing up for gigs and performances. The last time he was really out in the spotlight was 20 years ago when he did a song and video with Prince protege Jesse Johnson called "Crazay." I don't know if he's recorded anything since then.

What Prince was in the 80s, Sly Stone was in the late 60s/early 70s. He was a pretty major artist back then. I think this disappearing act has given him a more fascinating appeal, at least for me.

I agree about that, Kanye is too self-absorbed with his "I DESERVE THIS AWARD", etc... A true sign of a classy artist is humbleness, U2 knows they are a great band but at the same time they realize the other acts are worthy as well. U2 was aware that Mariah, Kanye, Gwen and Paul also all recorded very good albums last year and all of them were just as worthy to win and acknoledged each others talent instead of making the win all about them like a lot of other artists likely would.

Vash, I didn't think he looked bad. I just thought how ironic that he looked so much and kind of acted like Miles. The reason I say that is because there is a documentary about Miles that talks about how Miles Davis saw a performance of Sly at a concert he was also performing at and got inspiration from their performance.

I also thought that Paul McCartney was great. But I also have to agree with Dr. Jazz it was the absolute worst Grammy's ever. And it continues to go down hill. It was like AI goes to the Grammy's. Last nights awards, IMHO, only confirms what I believe that their is no talent left and the untalented have taken over.

I also agree with you Vash, what was Ciara and Fantasia both doing there???

Yeah, I didn't think he looked bad either, considering he's been out of the limelight and then to make an appearance at a major event like the Grammys, it was a bit of a shock at first, but it was exciting to see him. I forgot about Fantasia. She kind of overdid it last night too.

McCartney was good, he rocked out on one of those songs he performed. Also, props to Madonna. I thought she looked really good last night. Mariah turned out to be this year's Usher, a bunch of nominations but the only wins were pre-telecast.

sadly, I'm sure if you had approached Ciara before the Grammys and asked her what her favorite Sly Stone song was, the responce would be "Sly Stone sings? I only know him from the Rambo movies"

The grammies have lost luster with me because it is obvious that they award the acts that get the most promotion within the industry. Very good acts that don't sell well or whose labels don't promote them heavily won't get nominated. As time goes on more and more winners repeat themselves. Other than Kelly Clarkson, Keith Urban and John Legend who is a bona fide newcomer most of the people who won this year have won before, some have won as many as 10 times in the same category (U-2 has 7 wins in rock group). Ray Charles won 2 more posthumous awards. Other than Stevie Wonder's pop male win and a couple others these awards are only a so so affair. Not to say that people like u-2 aren't worthy, but it gets boring. I wonder if any of these acts will do what Bill Cosby did at the emmies (after he won 5 he withdrew his name to give someone else a chance). The grammies were more interesting 20 years ago.
