There are lots of 'em. Billy Joel's 1989 hit "We Didn't Start the Fire" mentions
Harry Truman, Doris Day, Johnny Ray, Joe McCarthy, Richard Nixon, Eisenhower,
Liberace, Joseph Stalin, Rockefeller, Einstein, James Dean, Elvis Presley, Davy
Crockett, Khruschev, Princess Grace, Mickey Mantle, Marilyn Monroe, Charles
DeGaulle, Buddy Holly, Castro, Kennedy, Chubby Checker, Hemingway, Dylan,
John Glenn, Pope Paul, Malcolm X, Reagan, and Sally Ride (among others).
Elton John's "Candle in the Wind" is an ode to Marilyn Monroe, and his
"Candle in the Wind 1997" to Princess Diana.
Ronnie McDowall's "The King Is Gone" is a tribute to Elvis Presley, and George
Harrison's "All Those Years Ago" is his memorial tribute to John Lennon.
Jimmy Dean's "PT 109" is a salute to John F. Kennedy.
Walter Brennan recorded "The Epic Ride of John H. Glenn" as a salute to the
astronaut.
Jump 'n the Saddle made "The Curly Shuffle," dedicated to The Three Stooges.
I'm sure there are others, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

Harrison's "All Those Years Ago" is his memorial tribute to John Lennon.
You mean Ronnie McDowell. He was the country singer who sounded like Elvis. Roddy McDowall was the British actor who played Cornelius in Planet of the Apes. He died in 1998.

Ray Stevens' 1985 song "The Haircut Song" has a line about Kojak looking like Bill Golden. Kojak, as you recall, was bald, and Bill Golden (actually, William Lee Golden) is the baritone for the Oak Ridge Boys with a long beard. Mr. Golden even has his own website at www.williamleegolden.com (http://www.williamleegolden.com/)!

03-10-2006, 01:19 PM
The Kinks- Celluloid Heroes:
Don’t step on Greta Garbo as you walk down the boulevard,
She looks so weak and fragile that’s why she tried to be so hard
But they turned her into a princess
And they sat her on a throne,
But she turned her back on stardom,
Because she wanted to be alone.
Rudolph Valentino, looks very much alive,
And he looks up ladies’ dresses as they sadly pass him by.
Avoid stepping on Bela Lugosi
’cause he’s liable to turn and bite,
But stand close by Bette Davis
Because hers was such a lonely life.
If you covered him with garbage,
George Sanders would still have style,
And if you stamped on Mickey Rooney
He would still turn round and smile,
But please don’t tread on dearest Marilyn
’cos she’s not very tough,
She should have been made of iron or steel,
But she was only made of flesh and blood.
----------------------------------------------------
Don McLean- American Pie:
When the jester sang for the king and queen,
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And while Lenin read a book on Marx,
The quartet practiced in the park,
-----------------------------------------------------
Simon & Garfunkel- Mrs. Robinson:
Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio
Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you, woo woo woo
What's that you say, Mrs. Robinson
Joltin' Joe has left and gone away, hey hey hey

How about Waylon Jennings' 1975 hit "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way", a tribute to Hank (Senior, not Junior, by the way) Williams? On the flip side is "Bob Wills Is Still The King", a tribute to none other than Bob Wills of western swing fame.

"Black Diamond Bay" by Bob Dylan mentions watching Walter Cronkite, and Cronkite and Eric Sevareid are referred to by their first names in CCR's "It Came Out of the Sky."
Also mentioned in that 1969 Creedence song is then-Vice President Spiro Agnew, and the lyric "Ronnie the Popular said it was a communist plot" refers to a right-wing incompetent B-movie actor who in 1969 controlled only one state.

ABC has a song called, "When Smokey Sings." Is "Smokey" in the song Smokey Robinson? They do say, "When Smokey Sings," and the only "Smokey" I know that sings is Smokey Robinson. If it is, then I should add this to the list of songs that mention celebrities.

Wasn't there a song that went (if not was entitled; I cannot find it in my almanacs) "just like Greta Garbo"? There was another phrase about "coming out the rain" or similar. I want to say it was from the mid-late 1970s because the artists sounded like they were influenced by the Starland Vocal Band, England Dan and John Ford Coley, etc.

First charted on the Hot 100 on 11/27/82.
Right Before Your Eyes
Every day i sit beside you
On the bus to madison avenue
Work in the big gray store
With the revolving doors
You don't even know my name
I guess that i'm to blame
Don't know the right things to say
So i pretend away
That i'm rudolph valentino
Pull up in my limousine
Oh, won't you come in out of the rain
Things'll never be the same
And then just like greta garbo You stare like there's no tomorrow
And you'll know what i'm thinking of
Right before your eyes i fall in love with you
Do, do, do ...
Today i'm done with games (today i'm done with games)
Gonna ask you for your name
Say i've been watching you
I even know what you do
Maybe today i'll tell you (maybe today i'll tell you)
I've found the nerve to sell you

Last night I dreamed I went to hillbilly heaven. And you know who greeted
me at the gate? The ole cowboy-philosopher himself, Will Rogers. He said
to me, he said Tex, the Big Boss of the riders up here has asked me to
kinda show you around. Now, over yonder are a couple of your ole
compadres. My, was I glad to see them, Carson Robison and the
Mississippi blue yodeler Jimmie Rodgers.
Singing:
I dreamed I was there in hillbilly heaven
Spoken:
He introduced me to Wiley Post, and he showed me the Hall of Fame with
all the gold guitars and fiddles hanging on the walls. Then he said,
Tex, step over this way, there are two more of your friends I know
youll want to see, theyre waitin for you. There they were standin
side by side and smilin at me--Hank Williams and Johnny Horton.
Singing:
I met all the stars in hillbilly heaven
Spoken:
Then I asked him who else do you expect in the next, uh, say a hundred
years? He handed me a large book covered with star dust. Will called it
the Big Tally Book. In it were many names and each name was branded in
pure gold. I began to read some of them as I turned the pages: Red Foley,
Ernest Tubb, Gene Autry, Roy Acuff, Eddy Arnold, Tennessee Ernie, Jimmy
Dean, Andy Griffith, Roy Rogers, Tex Ritter
Tex Ritter? Oh, well, thats when I woke up, and Im sorry I did, because

The Mamas & Papas did a remake of the Beatles' "I Call Your Name". Throughout the song, Cass whispers "John, John..." It's well-documented that Cass had a serious crush on John Lennon.
Speaking of John Lennon, he dedicated "Woman" to his Yoko, and "How Do You Sleep" was a swipe at Paul McCartney. Paul also wrote several songs about his wife, fellow Wing Linda, such as "My Love" and "The Lovely Linda".
Lionel Richie wrote "Missing You" in honor of Marvin Gaye, and Diana Ross took the song to the Top 10 in 1985. To date, that is still her most recent Top 10 hit.
Ray Stevens did a novelty hit called "I Need Your Help Barry Manilow".
June Carter wrote "Ring of Fire" about her forbidden love and passion for Johnny Cash, who was at the time still married to his first wife. Johnny Cash then made "Ring of Fire" one of his best known hits. Soon thereafter, he made June Carter his wife.
