UPN eyes 'Girlfriends' spin-off

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - UPN is looking to spin off its hit comedy "Girlfriends" by ordering a "backdoor" pilot to air as an episode of the long-running series later this season.

The potential spin-off will feature an all-new group of characters, women in the lives of professional football players.

"Girlfriends," now in its sixth season, revolves around the lives and loves of four women, a restaurateur, a divorcee, a free-spirited vegan and a self-involved married woman. The show's creator, Mara Brock Akil, is set to write the spin-off episode and would executive produce the new series with "Girlfriends" executive producer Kelsey Grammer.

It's called "The Game". While waiting for Girlfriends to come on I saw (I guess) the first episode. I called the network to find out what show they were airing in Girlfriend's normally scheduled time slot. It's supposed to be a spin off. But I thought a spin off has characters from the show it's spun off of? Didn't see anyone familiar from Girlfriends. And I don't think I'll be watching if the network decides to air it. I was not impressed.

It was a nice concept just like Cuts but I probably won't watch either. Joan made an appearence on there and that was it.
