Does anyone here notice how different the character was in the first season?? She seemed very indifferent, spoke in a lower voice and didn't have that eagerness to please that she had later on.
Watch a second season episode and her voice goes up a few octaves, she's very excitable and always has Archie's beer ready and dinner on the table when he gets home.
I guess most shows' first seasons are usually not the best, as the writers and actors are trying to see what works and what doesn't.

Yeah I notice that, in the first season she seemed more laid back then in the second season. But she still had that naive thing going on.

She just seemed like she didn't care about anything. I always took her attitude as a result of being beaten up psychologically and emotionally by Archie - she just tuned out so she didn't have to deal with him. That didn't last long, however... But it's almost like she's a different character, if you know what I mean...

I think it was a matter of finding the character,Jean Stapleton I remember saying she followed the wife in the Til Death Us Due Part somewhat in that first season and then decided the character need to be much softer and more lovable.I agree she was different in that first season I still like her though, but I agree she wast better after that first season.

The writers initially had Edith's character as somewhat of a smart aleck, not the submissive wife role that we're more familiar with. All that changed by season 2, although, I don't ever recall hearing an explanation as to why.

To quote Archie in one episode, she was still in training for her dingbat wings.

I agree....I also enjoyed her throughout the shows run. The Edith character resembled my my, in the way of greeting her husband at the door. My mom did that, plus her hair style was similar to Edith's.

I agree, Edith seemed to be smarter and less happy in the early episodes. She was still a very funny character, though!
Jean Stapleton's hair was, also, I believe, a darker shade of brown in the first season episodes, speaking of differences. (And, of course, Sally Struthers had her hair up in curls--her natural hair-type, by the way.)

Like when Archie and Edith get back from church and Gloria asks her how it was, and Edith tells her; then looks at Archie and says "Of course, 'Mr. Religon' here, fell asleep".

I like this quote, as well:
Archie: "When you get to be our age, you'll find there's more to life than being happy."
Edith: "*sighs* Believe me."

Obviously, the "shakedown cruise" aspect of the show was at work here, as the writers and producers decided Edith should be more upbeat and innocent in the second season.
Maybe they thought having a downbeat Edith didn't balance the more dynamic and cynical personalities of the other characters. I'm just guessing here.

Yeah, I agree, Edith was different early on. But Jean found the character quickly and gave us one of the great characters of all time.

I linked the Edith from seasons 2-9 the best. The first season Edith was kind of annoying I think.
