Here's a list of my favorite R&B songs of the 1990's. Of the ones I listed, which ones are your favorites?? I purposely left out people like Boyz 2 Men, and Whitney Houston, because I knew if I put them, they'd probably get the majority of the votes. So of the songs I listed, which do you like best??
Race's Girl

I like Too Close only because Blue covered that in 2001
vashti1999

The five I picked were:
Live And Learn: Joe Public
She's Playing Hard To Get: Hi-Five
Real Love: Mary J. Blige
Freak Me: Silk
Too Close: Next
Arrested Development is my favorite of the bunch but I don't consider them r&b or dance.

You could actually vote for more then one song. I usually vote for five tops, but on this poll I voted for 7, or 8. Too Close was one of my choices as well. That's the most recent song on the list. Most of these songs are for my two favorite years in music. 1992, and 1993. Here are all of my favorites.
Baby Baby Baby
Rhythm Is A Dancer
Real Love
Don't Walk Away
Weak
Freak Me
Breathe Again
Hey M.r D.J.
Sweat
Too Close
All these songs bring back so many memories of the best two years of my life. I wish today's R&B was still like this. I'm feeling really nostalgic right now.

You and I definitely do have alot in common, whether it's movies, music, or even sometimes politics. You're absolutely right, great minds definitely do think alike!! :D

She sure does have an awesome voice. And that's a great song!! I like Breathe Again a little better, but that song isn't far behind. I just wish we'd hear more from her. She'd put some of todays R&B artists to shame with her beautiful voice!!

OMG I love this list. I've always loved 90s RnB! I'm really nostalgic for this time too...it reminds me of my childhood and a lot of memories I had growing up...anyway, I picked
Baby Baby Baby by TLC
What About Your Friends by TLC
Rhythm Is a Dancer by Snap!
Real Love by Mary J.
Weak and Im So Into You by SWV
Dont Walk Away by Jade
Too Close by Next
Hey Mr. DJ by Zhane
Breathe by Toni Braxton
Someone remembers Zhane. I really liked their song "Shame."
Faith Evans was great in the 90s too. I remember "Soon As I Get Home" and "Love Like This" and "You Used To Love Me"...which used to be one of my favorite songs for some reason. I think Faith Evans has such a great voice. I have a long list of 90s rnb songs/groups that I used to love but I wont type it all, it would take too much time

I'd personally argue that TLC would get more votes on average than Boyz II Men. BIIM were huge, but TLC were much better IMO

You might be right about that, but I remember Boyz 2 Men being the second biggest R&B act, second only to Whitney Houston at one time. I think as far as longevity goes, TLC definitely wins. To be honest with you, the main reason I didn't put B2M, and Whitney up, is because I don't like them as much as the other artists and groups I listed. Their songs got so much radio airplay, that I just got sick of them.

Don't know if you know, but that song was originally done in 1978 by Evelyn "Champagne" King. You should seek out the original if you haven't heard it, it's the far superior version.

the prob right now is that mainstream r&b doesn't have much of an identity outside of hip hop. There is a lot of good stuff but it's not getting commercial airplay. The last r&b song that I really liked that was a huge hit single was "Lose My Breath"

BIIM started out with a number of good songs (Motownphilly, It's So Hard To Say Goodbye, End Of The Road, etc...) and then they just got so boring and overplayed. Whitney's entire career has been hit and miss IMO, but it's been more miss than hit lately.

I forgot to put Jodeci in this poll. How can I bring up 90's R&B without mentioning Jodeci??
Anyway, you guys have some good taste in music. You can mention some other 90's R&B songs and artists you like if you want. I'm sure there's alot that I forgot to mention.

other early/mid 90's r&b songs I remember liking:
Shy Guy - Diana King
the entire Crazysexycool era - TLC
My Lovin - En Vogue
Freak Like Me - Adina Howard
not counting stuff like Letitgo by Prince or the janet. album because those artists have proven that they weren't just linked to one era of time
all in all, I prefer 80's r&b personally, it seemed like 80's r&b was more rooted in funk and dance music than the 90's stuff. I remember when I was little in the 80's, watching BET as much as MTV in 1987

Yeah, I have both his CD's "Don't be cruel" and "Don't Be cruel dance mixes". He was so good then. Color Me Badd had their first and only great album. Then there was Tony Toni Tone. Who else? Father MC had a song I liked. New Edition & Keith Sweat.

another mid-90s r&b track that wasn't widely heard but was actually really good was "Let Down Your Guard" by Madonna. It was the b-side to Secret and didn't appear on any record but it was without a doubt the most r&b song any pop singer has ever recorded (and yes, I consider Mariah and J. Lo pop singers). I almost find it funny that she records a song like that yet has hardly no credibility on urban radio (for example, I think Push has a shot at having r&b airplay but it won't because it's Madonna) but yet people like Mariah and J. Lo made the transfer from pop to r&b by calling rappers up and they take them seriously (Mariah might try so hard to promote herself as an r&b artist but at the end of the day she'll still be a pop singer... it's like how Dolly Parton tried for years to emphasize pop over country until she finally accepted she'll always be a country artist). I have yet to hear an uptempo Mariah song without rappers that is as funky and purely r&b sounding as this song. You really would've thought it was a TLC song or something except it happened to be Madonna singing.

I Love Madonna. I have followed her career since she came out in 1983. I was 18 back then. It feels good to follow someone's career from the beginning. She is awesome and so damn hot!
I am from the early 70's so alot of my R&B music I grew up with was funk, soul like Earth Wind & Fire, Sun, Brass Construction, Marvin Gaye, Sly & the Family Stone, etc.

Then there was Tony Toni Tone.
Tony Toni Tone was awesome!! They had a really smooth sound. My favorite songs of there's were If I Had No Loot, and Anniversary. Also, Bobby Brown had a song in the early 90's where he was kissing on this woman on the beach. I can't remember the name of the song, but I loved it. The only lyrics I can think of are: "If it ain't good enough, good enough, baby, I'll work harder." Maybe someone will know what song I'm talking about.

OH Yeaaaaaah, Groove Theory. I remember "Tell Me" from them...ahhhhh how do I remember all these songs? This song came out when I was 7, and I didnt like it that much then, but I like it now. I remember watching more BET than MTV when I was younger, even though I watched both. I also remember "I Love Your Smile" by Shanice. I dont remember it from when it came out, but I still remember hearing it on the radio. XScape was good...I liked "Who Can I Run To" "Understanding" and "Just Kickin It" from them. Anyways, I already mentioned Faith Evans, but I loved "You Used to Love Me" for some reason.
Anyone remember Jon B.? lol I liked him a loooooooot...I remember he had a song with Tupac called "Are You Still Down" which I liked enough to buy his CD "Cool Relax" which I listened to a lot...I remember my mom taking that cd away for a little while because I guess she thought the songs were too mature for me as a 9 year old or something lol...but she gave it back in like, a month. Um, sorry..nostalgia.
Yeah, a partial list of some of the RnB 1990s songs I liked:
- Killing Me Softly and Ready Or Not by The Fugees
- Ex Factor by Lauryn Hill
- anything from The Velvet Rope by Janet Jackson

RE: Bobby Brown
it's pretty sad that both Bobby and the missus have become such self-parodies of themselves that younger generations refuse to acknoledge that they were both strong recording acts in their heyday. It may seem like an eternity ago, but people forget that during the Don't Be Cruel album, Bobby was bigger and more beloved than Usher could ever dream of becoming. However, he just developed an ego that served to kick his ass by the mid-late 90's.
Whitney had the bigger fall between the two. I remember not long ago, there was a thread about who the best vocalists in music are, yesterday or today, and one person put Whitney in his top five singers, and a younger teenage poster who probably remembers Whitney best as a train-wreck who has lost her voice because of eccessive smoking and drug use replied with "hell no!!!!", as if putting Whitney in the same catagory was like using J. Lo or Britney's names in there. It's sad that younger listeners suddenly think of Whitney as a J. Lo style singer when the truth was that she had a phenomenal voice when she came out in the 1980's pretty much through to The Preachers Wife. If her vocals on The Bodyguard soundtrack alone doesn't make her one of the best vocalists of her generation, than I don't know who else could possibly be.

I have yet to hear an uptempo Mariah song without rappers that is as funky and purely r&b sounding as this song. You really would've thought it was a TLC song or something except it happened to be Madonna singing.
I dont remember about urban radio play really, but I remember BET playing "Secret" by Madonna...

I haven't heard any of those songs you mentioned. I looked up the John B. song on myspace, but unfortunately they didn't have it. They do have alot of songs listed on there though, so I'll probably be spending most of tonight looking up the songs you listed.
I looked up Jon B. too to see if he had a myspace and it turns out he does. http://www.myspace.com/jonboogotti

Yeah this is kind of an old thread, but I dont care...I didnt see your reply. Anyway, if you have high speed internet, you can watch the video for "pretty girl" at www.singingfool.com which I'm surprised they have. You can watch a lot of the videos I mentioned on there I think.
Cool, thanks for the link. I'll be sure to check that out, and let you know what I thought of it. :)
