This is very exciting! I can't wait!! 30 series (10 episodes each in January) will be offered in January:

The In2TV network debuts on AOL.com in January and will offer 10 episodes apiece of 30 series, including the hits Alice, Growing Pains and Scarecrow and Mrs. King. AOL.com expects to be offering 100 series and more than 3,400 hours of content by the end of 2006.

“This builds on what has been our programming focus for many years and aligns well with our move to the open Web,” says Kevin Conroy, AOL Media Networks executive VP. “Our focus is on building a media business and driving advertising revenue.”

Amidst a recent flurry of new-media initiatives, the move is the first to fully embrace an advertising model. Conroy says the model—likely four spots for each half-hour of content, with single 15- or 30-second spots replacing the traditional pod of three or four ads—allows Time Warner to bring more content online faster. That, in turn, means more eyeballs, he says, to drive ad revenues and additional content.

“There are reasons that there were decades of ad-supported TV before there was the first pay channel,” Conroy says. “We firmly believe the ad model is the way to build a market and business.”

In2TV’s six original channels are

* LOL TV (comedies such as Welcome Back Kotter, Perfect Strangers and Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper),
* Dramarama (Falcon Crest, Sisters and Eight Is Enough)
* Toontopia (animated shows like Beetlejuice and Pinky and the Brain)
* Heroes and Horrors (Wonder Woman, Lois & Clark: The Adventures of Superman and Babylon 5)
* Rush (action shows such as La Femme Nikita, Kung Fu and The Fugitive)
* Vintage (Growing Pains, F-Troop and Maverick)

Two channels will be added next year for reality shows and cancelled series, the latter perhaps becoming a clearinghouse for unseen programs. “A [cancelled] show could be available almost immediately, [including] any unaired episodes,” says Eric Frankel, president, Warner Bros. Domestic Cable distribution.

Press Release:

These series will be offered in a new DVD quality video format called "AOL Hi-Q." This new technology, which builds upon AOL's industry-leading online video experience, enables high resolution, full-screen viewing. It will be made available free to any broadband user (along with standard-quality streaming). AOL.com is the first major portal to offer this kind of high quality video experience to consumers.

In2TV will leverage the unique capabilities of the online medium, allowing broadband consumers to experience, enjoy and interact with these series in a variety of ways. The In2TV site will organize the TV series into six genre-themed channels, listed below. (Additional channels will be launched at a later date.) Fans will also be able to search the series by show titles, cast names, and other key words and phrases. This programming will be combined with highly engaging and interactive editorial, promotional and game content. Fans can enjoy special interactive features, including:

-- "Starchives" - Episodes featuring stars before they were stars, including Brad Pitt on Growing Pains, and Jay Leno on Alice

-- "Punchlines" - Great viral comedy clips

-- "TV Karaoke" - Sing-alongs with favorite TV show themes

-- "Classic Creme de la Creme" - Showcase of the most memorable episodes of a given series

-- "Betcha Didn't Know!: The Ultimate TV Quiz" - Fans can test their TV trivia skills

-- "RetroRunway" - Fashion from TV series

-- "StarFavs" - Stars' favorite episodes

-- "Where Are They Now?" - Find out where your favorite stars are now

-- AIM interviews with cast members

-- Month long salutes to specific series, stars, and genres with extensive episodes available online and numerous interactive features. Examples could include "Kotter-thon" and "Teri Hatcher-A-Thon"

In2TV will also provide 88 interactive experiences in the first year built around specific shows. Examples of these interactive experiences could include unlocking additional material like a famous martial artist commenting on the mysteries of Shaolin in the Kung Fu series, or testing a viewer's intricate and arcane knowledge on subjects as diverse as the complex world of Babylon 5 or the 80's in conjunction with an iconic show like Growing Pains.

In2TV will provide AOL's advertisers with compelling video inventory for instream broadband advertising as well as opportunities for sponsorships and accompanying banner ads. Video ads, 15-second and 30-second spots, will be limited to a total of 1-2 minutes within each 30-minute episode as compared to 8 minutes of advertising on broadcast television.

The six channels, and a sampling of the shows fans can find within them, follow. A complete list of the series included in the program is attached.

LOL TV: Laugh out Loud with this channel that will feature Welcome Back Kotter, the Emmy-nominated series that launched the career of John Travolta and outperformed The Mary Tyler Moore Show and 60 Minutes. Even its theme song by John Sebastian climbed to #1. Fans will also find Chico and the Man, where Freddie Prinze broke new ground for Latinos on TV alongside Emmy-winner Jack Albertson, as well as Perfect Strangers, featuring the foibles of cousins Balki and Larry, in a show that helped to establish ABC's "TGIF" lineup and ranked #1 in every time period it aired. Plus, Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, an ABC hit which ranked #1 in its time period on Tuesdays and again when it moved to Fridays, as well as Head of the Class, which debuted on ABC as a Top 10 sitcom.

Dramarama TV: This channel will showcase great dramatic series ranging from the five-time Emmy-nominated Sisters, starring Emmy winner Sela Ward, to Falcon Crest, one of primetime's juiciest soaps that was a Friday night staple on CBS for nine seasons. Drama fans will also find Scarecrow and Mrs. King, the Golden Globe-nominated and Emmy-winning series co-starring Bruce Boxleitner and former "Angel" Kate Jackson, along with TV icon Robert Urich in Spenser: For Hire, which was so beloved by fans that it spun off four made-for-cable movies. Plus, Eight is Enough, the Emmy-nominated series starring Dick Van Patten that ranked in ABC's Top 10 for season after successful season.

Toontopia TV: Top-rated animation comes to life with Beetlejuice, the animated adaptation of Tim Burton's hit movie that ran successfully for multiple seasons on both Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. The channel will also feature animated favorites such as Daytime Emmy-winning Freakazoid, as well as fellow Daytime Emmy-winners Pinky and the Brain and Histeria!, both executive produced by the legendary Steven Spielberg. Plus, there's The New Adventures of Batman, featuring the voices of Adam West and Burt Ward from the live action series.

Heroes and Horrors TV: Sci-fi and horror fans will be riveted by this channel that includes Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, which was a Top 10 program on ABC for three seasons, starring Dean Cain and Golden Globe-winner Teri Hatcher of Desperate Housewives, along with every episode of Babylon 5, the Emmy Award-winning syndicated science fiction series so popular that stations aired it twice a day. Plus, there's Freddy's Nightmares hosted by the maniacal Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), the star of the hit film series "Nightmare on Elm Street," and the adventures of Wonder Woman starring Lynda Carter, which was consistently a Top 20 series across two networks, airing on both ABC and then on CBS. Plus V, where resistance fighters must stop "Visitors" from invading Earth.

Rush TV: This channel will feature action-adventure favorites such as La Femme Nikita, which enjoyed an enormous cult following as witnessed by over 300 websites dedicated to its star, Peta Wilson, and the show. Fans will also find the Emmy-winning and Golden Globe-nominated series Kung Fu, which dominated Thursday nights in its broadcast run catapulting ABC to #1 in the time period with key demos. In addition, fans can re-discover The Adventures of Brisco County Jr, a fan favorite that built its time period on FOX and went on to be a Top 10 series on TNT for three consecutive seasons. Other series in Rush TV will include 2001's The Fugitive, Dark Justice and more.

Vintage TV: This channel will feature Growing Pains, the Emmy-winning sitcom that lasted an incredible seven seasons, turning Kirk Cameron into a teenage heartthrob (receiving 10,000 fan letters a month) and featuring a young actor by the name of Leonardo DiCaprio. Plus, there's Alice, which ranks among an elite group of sitcoms to air for nine successful seasons. Honored with multiple Golden Globe Awards, it consistently ranked as a Top 10 network series on broadcast and attracted a broad audience of both men and women. Plus, fans will also find F Troop, which became a top rated hit on Nick@Nite after a successful run on ABC, as well as Emmy-nominated Maverick, which was voted "The Best Western of the 1950s" by TV Guide. Other Vintage TV series will include fan favorite The F.B.I.

This sounds really cool. When I first saw the headline I assumed it was an On Demand cable channel on Time Warner (like what Comcast has), which would really be ideal for me. But this is the next best thing. Seeing these old shows online for free with minimal commercials will be good. I'm looking forward to seeing Alice, Eight Is Enough and others again, and of course Welcome Back Kotter.

Sounds like a great idea. I just hope the initial response is positive enough to keep the service operating. And, more importantly, I hope some really obsure titles are offered.

Sounds Really Good. Scarecrow and Mrs. King is something i am dying to have on dvd though. I hope this doesn't prevent it from being released. Perhaps since they will have all these episodes available, why couldn't they have an option for viewers to also buy them on dvd? I think that would be something for them to look into doing.

One thing to notice: Initially, there will only be 10 episodes per series. (They don't want to convert their entire library to an internet-compatible format unless the venture will work). As time marches on, more episodes WILL be added.

Oh, and by the way: Even though they're planning to set the episodes to where you can't save them (like you can with a traditional VOD service), there are ways around just about any save-blocking method on the internet :-)

Looking at the list of 30 shows, none of them are on cable TV right now (except the library stuff AmericanLife TV has). So, I guess these are "exclusive" to AOL.com, and explains why shows such as Full House, Fresh Prince, Night Court, Family Matters, Step by Step are not on here.

And from what I heard, In2TV is free on AOL.com, but you have to actually have AOL to view the videos. I hope this is not the case, but this is what I found out from Warner.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were AOL subscribers only. There's been talk of declining membership in recent years, so this could possibly be their way of enticing people to switch to them. Either way, I've got it so I'm happy. BRING ON WELCOME BACK KOTTER AND EIGHT IS ENOUGH!!!

The more I talk to people from Warner about this makes it sound like this service is for AOL Broadband users, but we'll see. If it is, I won't be able to watch :( I had AOL from 1996-99; not anymore.

The service starts in early 2006, probably January, as stated on page one of this thread.

I don't have an official statement yet, but as of now this is what will happen:

All the videos will be on AOL.com, you'll need broadband, and you have to have an AOL account to log-in to view the episodes.

I doubt an AIM account will work, but who knows. I will ask them.

Seth
11-14-2005, 04:03 PM
I seriously doubt that this is AOL subscribers only for several reasons:

1)If AOL genuinely thinks that these reruns of old TV Shows will generate the massive increase in subscriber base they want, they're sorely mistaken. Reruns are great, but in the grand scheme of things, are certainly not the bigg est TV market out there, far and away.

2)You can bet your sweet bippy if this were for AOL subs only that they would already be doing promotion - even saying "for AOL for Broadband subscribers only" in the article and/or press release - in order to build hype and membership for the launch.

Pavan
11-14-2005, 04:07 PM
Well, I asked them to elaborate on this statement from the press release:

"It will be made available free to any broadband user (along with standard-quality streaming). AOL.com is the first major portal to offer this kind of high quality video experience to consumers."

Response:
"Yes, but you can't access AOL Broadband unless you're a paid subscriber."

Seth
11-14-2005, 04:10 PM
There has been no language to even remotely suggest it will be in the "AOL for Broadband" section - NONE. There is a HUGE "Video on Demand" section on the main AOL.com site available here: http://www.aol.com/video/main.adp

Would not be surprised, in the LEAST, if it were roughly here.

Pavan
11-14-2005, 04:13 PM
Precisely why this is very confusing. I've asked multiple people from Warner and they all lean towards the "AOL Broadband" area. If this is for AOL users only, I will ask my friends at Warner to give me an account for free :) (just kidding!).

Seth
11-14-2005, 04:14 PM
From the NYTimes article on the deal, a couple of key points:
For AOL, the In2TV deal is part of a broad strategy to create a range of video offerings to attract people to its free AOL.com (http://aol.com/) portal. It already offers some video news and sports programs from CBS News, ABC and CNN.

and

For those who want to watch on a big screen, AOL is introducing optional technology that it says will produce a DVD-quality picture. Even with a broadband connection, most Internet video looks grainy at full width on a computer monitor, let alone a big TV set. The new option, called AOL Hi-Q, will require the downloading once of special software, and the program may not start for several minutes, depending on the speed of the users' connection.

There is a catch. To use the technology, viewers will have to agree to participate in a special file-sharing network. This approach helps AOL reduce the cost of distributing-high quality video files by passing portions of the video files from one user's computer to another. AOL says that since it will control the network, it can protect users from the sorts of viruses and spyware that infect other peer-to-peer systems.

AOL is using file-sharing technology from Kontiki, a Silicon Valley company providing a similar system to the ambitious Internet video program of the BBC.

It's different JT. I switched form AOL dialup to broadband a few months ago. Broadband is faster than dialup and the connection is sometimes through a cable modem. (I think it's available through phone lines too, not sure.) But just in basic terms of getting around the internet, I'd recommend the upgrade even without this new service.

Good News!! Official statement! It will be available for FREE to ANYONE on the internet. My Warner contacts got together and discussed it I guess, and found out what really was going on. So, everyone here will get to see all these great shows--for free!! Unless you have 56K dial-up, then you're screwed--because it will just be slow for you.

I think we will see that for sure sometime in 2006. From the clips I saw, I think Jesse, All About the Andersons, The Ben Stiller Show, and Love Connection might also pop-up. I hope Life Goes On comes, too.
This is just a great idea from Warner/AOL to do this, especially to shows that are NOT on cable TV.

Anyway this is just the initial 30--they have cleared 300! So I'm sure we will see everything!

Thanks, Pav!

The slowness is nothing new for me. I used to go to a site that offered free downloads of soaps at basically the same speed, and yeah, it'd take forever to download, but I got used to it.

I just hope we can get some kind of inexpensive fast-speed thing soon. Does anyone have any ideas?

JT, if where you live offers DSL (even a little concoction called "DSL Lite") or cable-modem internet service, you should genuinely consider switching if it's even REMOTELY affordable. The download speeds are simply amazing - and for downloading videos on the internet, it's truly an almost must-have.

Everything just downloads so...much...faster. At the house, I have DSL, and my downloads average around 400KB per second (compared with 4KB/sec with dialup at the same location). And on the LAN line at WKU....just....wow. (I can easily get up to about 1 MB/Sec on good days, and 500KB/Sec on bad days)

This is exciting. I'm happy about getting to see Lois & Clark and Growing Pains again. This will be a great way to catch shows that aren't on cable or that may not be in your budget to buy on DVD.

If it's on the list, that means it's a LAUNCH TITLE, meaning it will be available when the service first launches.

Oh, and by the way: Even though they're planning to set the episodes to where you can't save them (like you can with a traditional VOD service), there are ways around just about any save-blocking method on the internet :-)

Oooooo....however, I have no idea how. LOL

Anyway, this sounds awesome. Unfortunately I have dialup at home...but maybe it'll work.

dawsongirl
11-15-2005, 05:58 PM
Unless you have 56K dial-up, then you're screwed--because it will just be slow for you.

This is great news and all, but I'd rather be able to own these on DVD. I don't really like watching video on the computer. Especially since my sound seems to be picky about when it wants to work.
I personally think it would be better to offer the exact same thing, but instead, to indemand services. That would definitely be better for me.

What would really be cool is if you could download them onto your computer, put them on a DVD and have them for later. You will not be able to download any of the episodes to your computer, it is streaming only.

You are correct. You will not be able to save, burn or record any of the episodes. The episodes are set up to be streaming video (viewing only.) From what I have read this is done on purpose so people can not record them. There will also be 15 second commercial spots.

Actually I have used some stream capture tools in the past and they are not too difficult...(I could do it!) I do remember it being difficult with AOL when trying to record AOL Sessions concerts. I never recorded any "AOL content" but I've seen sites claiming it is possible.

Anyone have some information on a good capture program...I believe I used NetTransport???

I hope it will be different come launch and this is not a true example of the quality otherwise it will be hard to watch anything.

I just got finished reading the preview. The preview was well done, but I have to say i am very dissapointed in WB. What is the point of having shows if your not going to show the series with the episodes in order. They are jumping all over the place from beginning of a series to the end. I can't watch a show like that. If they are going to have 10 episodes it should be the first 10 episodes of S1 of each show, not how they have it set up.

Oh well maybe i will check out an early episode or two of some shows i haven't seen in years, just to give me an idea if i want to collect them on dvd or not. As far as following shows on IN2TV it is virtually impossible without the episodes offered in order.

Thanks. Yeah, I do agree with you. It would be ideal to have the first 10 episodes. But they have three features that they use:

-- "Starchives" - Episodes featuring stars before they were stars, including Brad Pitt on Growing Pains, and Jay Leno on Alice
-- "Classic Creme de la Creme" - Showcase of the most memorable episodes of a given series
-- "StarFavs" - Stars' favorite episodes

Oh well. Hopefully we get all the episodes of each series they air eventually. I'm told we will get 10 new episodes a month. And 5 of the 10 episodes from the previous month will be removed, so make sure you watch all 10 every month because you never know which 5 they will remove.

My Problem is with Head of the Class. Anytime there is an opportunity to see episodes, like on NAN or TBS, we see the first eps and maybe something from the second or third season. Nothing from the latter seasons 3,4 and 5 and I don't like that.

I am hoping they don't jump around to much on drama shows like falcon's crest. Maybe it is easier to skip around with a sitcom i dunno even that makes me mad. But please don't give me 2 episodes of season 1 from Falcon's Crest then jump to another season. It will be interesting to see how that pan's out next week. Maybe someone who talks to them can wisen them up a little on this matter.

I was able to run this from my computer at work, and I was impressed with the quality. However, I'm having a hell of a time running it on my home PC. When I run it in the small window within my browser, the ads work, but the actual shows themselves do not - the video screen is black, and there is no audio. When I download via AOL HiQ Video, I get an error message saying that the license for this content has expired.

I'm guessing that there is something going on with the DRM (digital rights management) on my Windows Media Player. But I have spent several hours trying to figure it out, and I can't. I'll be curious to hear if anyone runs into this same problem.

Influencer Award'

AOL and Warner Bros. are saying "Welcome Back" to thousands of classic TV shows with the launch of In2TV, the first broadband television network, on AOL.com. The network offers the largest collection of free on-demand TV shows on the Web, including full episodes of favorite Warner Bros. programs from the past 40 years such as Welcome Back, Kotter, Chico & The Man, Alice, Growing Pains, Sisters, Kung Fu, Lois & Clark and many others, along with interactive features and viral videos that enable audiences to experience and interact with television programming in an entirely new way. To celebrate the launch, AOL and Warner Bros. will host an event tonight at the Museum of Television and Radio in Beverly Hills, with stars from the In2TV programming lineup scheduled to make appearances.

"In2TV breaks new ground as the first true broadband television network. With the largest collection of full length television programming anywhere on the Web, plus interactive features and viral videos all free and on-demand, In2TV will appeal to existing fans as well as introduce these shows to a whole new generation," said Kevin Conroy, Executive Vice President, AOL Media Networks. "In2TV is another important milestone in the evolution of video on the Web, and is one more way that we are making AOL.com the best destination for video online."

"In2TV begins to realize the true potential of Web-based TV by putting the viewer in charge of their own TV schedule online," said Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group. "This opens up new opportunities for platforms and program distributors alike and points to the prospect of exciting new paradigms in online and interactive entertainment soon to come."

"In2TV offers consumers access to an unprecedented collection of Warner Bros. TV favorites including thousands of great dramas, comedies, animated series loaded with unique interactive features," said Eric Frankel, President, Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution. "We're proud to team with AOL on this first-of-its-kind broadband network and, in the near future we will be adding more recent programs and other TV related content from our studio and other producers that you can't find anywhere else on the Web."

Available exclusively through the AOL.com Web site (http://www.aol.com/in2tv), the In2TV(TM) service lets fans watch hundreds of episodes from dozens of shows every month, along with quizzes, puzzles, photo galleries and polls tied to the various shows. The shows are organized into six genre-themed channels (with two more to launch this summer), including:

*LOL TV (TM): Laugh Out Loud with everyone's favorite comedies from Welcome Back, Kotter which made a household name out of John Travolta to the slapstick antics of Cousin Balkai and Larry in Perfect Strangers as well as the Emmy-winning Chico and the Man, Hangin' With Mr. Cooper and Head of the Class.

*Dramarama TV (TM): Fans will enjoy the unaired "lost" pilot of juicy soap Falcon Crest and all the drama of five-time Emmy nominated Sisters, plus there's Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Spenser: For Hire and the family favorite Eight Is Enough.

*Toon Topia TV (TM): Kids and adults alike will flock to animated fare such as Beetlejuice, Steven Spielberg Presents Pinky and the Brain and Freakazoid, The New Adventures of Batman, and Histeria!

*Heroes and Horrors TV (TM): Sci-Fi and Horror come together in heroic proportions with Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Babylon 5, Wonder Woman, V and Freddy's Nightmares.

*What a Rush TV: Rev up for plenty of action-adventure when East meets West in Kung Fu, plus La Femme Nikita, The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr., Dark Justice and The Fugitive.

*Vintage TV (TM): Fans find all-time favorites such as Growing Pains with heartthrob Kirk Cameron, F-Troop, The F.B.I., Maverick and Alice.

A list of shows available at launch is included below.

All of the episodes can also be found through the new AOL(R) Video Search, and can be viewed full-screen with Windows Media streaming technology as well as in the new AOL(R) Hi-Q(TM) video format, which can deliver DVD-quality videos directly to consumers quickly and efficiently.

In2TV also features highly engaging viral short-form videos and programming themes that repackage some of the greatest moments in television in exciting new ways. Examples include "Starplay," featuring stars before they were stars; "Punchline," great comedy clips; "TV Karaoke," theme-song sing-alongs; "Creme de la Classic TV," the best episodes from a series; "Betcha Didn't Know!," fun facts about favorite TV stars; "RetroRunway" great fashion highlights; and "Pilot Theater," TV pilot episodes.

In addition, In2TV offers "In2Active TV"--unique interactive experiences that test fans' knowledge of TV trivia and offer addictive games and challenges. At launch, "In2Active TV" will include a Growing Pains memory game called "Mike," similar to the popular 80's game "Simon"; a Babylon 5-themed game called "Spaceoids," a throwback to the classic arcade game where the user fires away at space rock and debris; and a Pinky and the Brain drawing activity where users can create their own cartoons the old fashioned way--one frame at a time. Each of these series will also feature TVIQ quizzes which run concurrent with the airing of specific show episodes and add a new dimension to the traditional viewing experience.

In2TV provides advertisers with compelling video inventory for instream broadband advertising as well as opportunities for sponsorships and accompanying banner ads. Video ads, 15-second and 30-second spots, will be limited to a total of 1-2 minutes within each 30-minute episode as compared to 8 minutes of advertising on broadcast television.

Launch Celebration

To celebrate In2TV's launch, AOL and Warner Bros. will host a star-studded party tonight at the Museum of Television and Radio in Beverly Hills at 7 p.m. PT. With Welcome Back Kotter star Gabe Kaplan as the evening's emcee, the event will feature appearances by stars from In2TV shows such as Growing Pains, Perfect Strangers, Kung Fu, Babylon 5, V, The New Adventures of Batman and others.

As a part of the evening's events, AOL and Warner Bros. will honor the late Freddie Prinze, celebrated comedian and star of Chico and the Man, with the first In2TV Influencer Award, for his groundbreaking contributions and legacy as a Latino actor. Actor/Comedian George Lopez, star of ABC's George Lopez, will present the award to Freddie Prinze Jr., star of ABC's Freddie.

"I'm honored to accept the In2TV Influencer Award on behalf of my father," said Prinze Jr. "This is a fitting tribute to a man whose career helped open doors for Latinos in entertainment. I'm sure he'd be humbled by this recognition."

In addition, AOL and Warner Bros. have established a scholarship in Freddie Prinze's name at the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television for a talented graduate student who furthers the interests of Hispanic minorities in the areas of writing, producing or directing for television.

If you mean Windows Media Player 10, here. (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.aspx)

Just getting confirmation from everyone else, is your picture truly full screen, meaning that the entire screen is taken up by the program, or is the time display and a little message still seen at the bottom of the screen? I just want to make sure it's like this for everyone.

Mine is full Page without the time but then again I have my bar only to show when I move the curser over it..., I know how the Hi-Q is supposed to be better but since I don't have IE i can't use it but It still only takes like a minute to load and has great picture quality and one commercial right before the show starts...

I had the same problem yesterday and I had no idea how to fix it. Hopefully, someone will come up with a solution. Since today is supposed to be the official launch date, maybe the videos might work better. I'll try again and see.

Sal - I found the solution...for me, anyway. I updated the BIOS on my machine last year after changing the CPU, and apparently that wreaks havoc with DRM. I found a tech note from Microsoft which fixed the problem for me:

Is anyone having the following problem:

I download the HI-Q files into the My Videos Library. I click on Play it brings opens up the AOL-HI-Q player and starts to play my tv episode. I have option to goto full-screen and everything is good. But no matter what episode i have chosen to watch at or around 21 minutes or so into watching an episode the player completely shuts off on me. Anyone experiencing similar problems or have any idea how to fix this ? It would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!

I can't get over how good the video quality is on the Eight Is Enough pilot, which I just downloaded. I hope they eventually give people the option of burning them to dvd, even for a SMALL fee, I'd be interested.

I just got that error as well, despite the fact that only minutes ago I finished watching the pilot episode of Babylon 5. When I went to load another episode, in the AOL Hi-Q Video Player, I got an error saying I have to use AOL Video Player. How very odd.

It's been awhile since I've downloaded an HiQ episode, but I just downloaded the Welcome Back Kotter Christmas episode. Does anyone know if in2TV made any changes in terms of viewing shows full screen? I tried double clicking the video but the controls and a message were still visible at the bottom.

I bought a media player (DLink 510) that attaches to your TV and streams from your computer network and finally got it set up. However though I can get other videos to play the IN2TV ones are telling me that I need an "updated license!"

Anyone have any insight on this? I'd pay to get some of these shows (like "Perfect Strangers!") but that would be too easy I guess.

We will have more on the blog on In2TV's relaunch this week...but for now, read this article:

WARNER BROS. AND AOL PLAN to relaunch their In2TV co-venture sometime next year, as the broadband network with full episodes of old-time hits has failed to gain traction since debuting in early 2006.

When announced in late 2005, the service looked to be a groundbreaker by offering dozens of shows free and on-demand--albeit from yesteryear--such as "Welcome Back Kotter" and "Alice."

But then several months later, Disney made full episodes of current hits such as "Desperate Housewives" available on ABC.com, taking away much of In2TV's uniqueness.

On Friday, Warner Bros. Television Group head Bruce Rosenblum said it would be "reinvented" by the second quarter next year. A redesign and the addition of some sort of social networking capabilities are expected. The service's section, with memorable show theme songs, might also be an untapped resource. Rosenblum said the site's experience is "not immersive" enough.

The ad-supported service, which is housed on AOL's television section, offers a trove of shows that are part of the Warner Bros. library. There are multiple episodes from multiple seasons of each. On Friday, the unaired pilot of "Aquaman" was the most-watched show.

Besides the likes of "Chips" and "Growing Pains," there are more recent shows available, such as flops "Joey" and "The Real Gilligan's Island."

Episodes include pre-roll ads. Procter & Gamble is currently on board as an advertiser, and AOL is now selling the inventory. Warner Bros. and AOL are both divisions of Time Warner.

Rosenblum, who spoke at a New York television conference, used the coming relaunch as an example of the commitment of the studio--which produces a run of current prime-time hits--to exploiting its library via new distribution channels.

Also next spring, the company has said it will launch TWorks.com--a site focusing on animation with shows such as "Looney Tunes" and "Hanna-Barbera." The company said the venture, which will have original content produced by Warner Bros., will also include games and virtual worlds.

"Fans will be able to forge a deeper relationship with the characters than they have ever been able to in the past," the company said in September--perhaps offering some insight into plans for In2TV with its iconic characters drawn from "Lois & Clark" (starring Teri Hatcher and Dean Cain), "Wonder Woman" (Lynda Carter) and "Max Headroom."

T-Works sales will be handled by a digital media team under Warner Bros. syndication sales head Michael Teicher.

Also in online distribution, Warner Bros. has a programming deal with Joost.com.

Warner Bros. will launch TWorks in 2008, a newly created interactive hub for its animation properties.

That's good to hear. I haven't watched In2TV is sometime. I watched about every episode of Growing Pains and Alice available on there, but they stopped updating their shows, so I quit. Let's hope we'll see more sitcoms on there, like Murphy Brown, Night Court, and The Drew Carey Show, and other shows that Warner has abandoned on DVD.

This news sounds very promising except for one detail:

The original In2TV couldn't be seen in Canada! If you're going to provide an online video service for TV fans to watch, it would be nice if the rest of the world can watch it, too.

Even on AOL's Canadian site, aol.ca, if you try to watch an IN2TV video, it still won't work. That's just unfair! Something has to be done about that or else I'll have to find better alternatives. If I do, I promise I'll let you know about them.
