View Full Version : Update on my sick dog

For those that don't know, my miniature daschound Red was put into the hospital with a crit of 9.7 and BUN off the charts but estimated around 180. That means that her kidney's are not taking all the poisin out of her body. A regular crit is usually around 2.6 and a BUN is not over 30.
She is coming home tomorrow after a week in the hospital. Her BUN is now down to 120 and the doctor said she is well enough to come home but there is alot I have to do.
She gets 125cc Subcutaneous Fluid twice a day, a Baytrill pill twice a day, a nausea pill twice a day (to keep her food down) and a 45cc tube feeding twice a day for breakfast and dinner and 50cc for lunch.
The doctor has said she doesn't have much time left, but I guarantee I'm going to make sure her time left is as peaceful as I can make it. She's my baby...I've had her for 14 years and I don't know...I don't want to have to make the decision to put her down but I know I will have to soon. I just don't want her to suffer.
She has to go back to the vet next Tuesday to get more blood work done to check her numbers and hopefully they will continue to drop. If you don't see me on here a lot this will be why. My time will be spent caring for my dog.

I'm so very sorry about this, I truly am. I absolutely love, and adore animals, and it warms my heart when I see people like you who are the same way. I will pray for both you and your dog at this time. Please give him a big hug for me, and say that's from Little Mel!! :)

I'm sorry to hear about your poor doggie. I lost my beloved Missy last winter at age 12. Dogs bring so much love into your life and it's always devistating when they cross the Rainbow Bridge. My prayers are with you.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I hope she gets better too, but it won't last. She's in the end stages of CRF. Time is not on her side. She'll come home, and hopefully her numbers will continue to go down. THe doctor doesn't know how much time she has left, but I'll try to make her happy.

how old is she?
Thanks guys. She's 15, she'll be 16 in February if she makes it. I know she's had a long life...but I didn't want it to end this way. I was hoping she'd die in her sleep one night with no pain...now that won't happen. I'll have to make that decision now, and I really don't won't to have to face that.
I've found lots of websites of people who have gone through similar things and they know exactly what I'm going through. THey all say it's the toughest decision to make but that when the time is right I will know. I'll have to take thier word for it.
I have a meeting in 20 minutes then I go get my puppy at 3 after learning how to administer sub q fluids and learning how to tube feed her. After that she's home.
She has perked up ALOT, but no idea how long it will last. The rest of her life will entail going to the vet alot for blood work and lots of medicine at home. As long as she doesn't seem to mind I'm going to do everything in my power to keep her active. I just don't know how much longer I have with her. I imagine alot of pictures will be taken to put in my scrapbook, but it won't be the same.
I believe this holiday season is going to bite the dust this year. It always seems to go wrong this time of year...I'm starting to dread it.

Oh Ags, this is such a difficult time for you...wish I could be there with you. I know you will do everything to give your beloved pet the love and care only you know how. You are still in my thoughts. I had wanted to PM you and ask you what has happened, but I didn't want to impose you at this difficult time. Thanx for letting us know the update. Thanx for bringing us into your difficult time. We understand if you are not on the forums much. Your pet needs you now. Take care sweetie.

I awlays had animals growing up I wanted to work in a zoo, mabe some day,but when I was younger I had dogs, cats, birds, fish, ducks, goose, name we had it and sometimes we would go to the country and we had a friend who lived by a river anyways he a a squrill a wild one but,he would always come to me whe nme and my parents to visit, the thingthat I like about this squrill was I would stay out side for a while and he knew me then he would climb from the botton to the top of my head and just sit there. those were the days, but 2 of our dogs were 17 18 one was a black lab she was apet, very frendly then my mom found some dogs puppys in a box on the side of the road one day she bought them home we kept one a big puppy, his name was JD he turnd out to be pretty cool, but when I was not living at home any more he had to go to surgery and he passed away,no one was around, but Blackie the black lab was to old so my brother ook her to the vet to be put to sleep he did not want to stay with her and that brotherd me and theffamily because Blackie had been with us for 18 years, but I think my brother never forgave him self for not being in the room where blackie was to be put down, But ow my mom has Sheeba abd Sheeba is doing well she's stubborn as ever whines all the time when she wants to go in the car or out side. She is 9, and the dr says the lumps are just fatty tissie. but,she still gets into anything she'll eat anything also. Well thats enough. Later

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I have a four year old dachshund myself, and she is my baby, constant companion and dearest friend. I have
been unemployed for six months and live alone. So I guess you could say that my whole world revolves around my dog, Heidi. I know just how you feel. I have always loved dogs. They are so loyal and fill a void in our lives that people who aren't animal lovers just cannot understand. My most heartfelt wishes to you and your pet.

I really appreciate all the support guys. You have no idea how much this means. I imagine I'll probably be on here mostly at night or when she is sleeping like now.
I had to give her the first round of meds today at home, she's used to it with it going on all week, I think it was harder on me. I've convinced my dad to come help me 3 times a day. I hold her while he either shoves the tube down her throat or stick the needle in her back for fluids.
She has started drinking on her own so I have hope she will start eating on her own. She did lick a few bites off of my finger but not enough so we had to tube her.
My vat has been really cool about everything. He even gave me his cell phone number and told me if I need anything ever to call him any time. It also helps to know several of the vet techs, so if anything comes up, they are just a phone call away.
Anyway, I need to get some sleep. I need to be up in 6 hours for the next round of meds. I'll give y'all an update tomorrow.
Oh, and feel free to PM me anytime for updates. :) Thanks guys, I really do appreciate you letting me talk about it here.

SHE ATE SOMETHING!!!!!!!
This morning we tried to get her to eat and she refused so we tube fed her. Afterwards we fixed breakfast for ourselves. Red came in and starting begging my dad so he gave a small bite of his egg. She enhaled it :D !
We called the vet to see if we could give her egg and he said go for it. We fixed her a scrambled egg and she ate half. I'm SO excited!!!!!
