Roseanne's plastic surgery had NOTHING to do with the downfall of the show. The best seasons of this show were 3,4,5, and 6. 5 and 6 were probably the better of the four, and if you recall, that was AFTER Roseanne had her plastic surgery.
Let me just refresh your mind of the 5th and 6th season episodes:
1) The lights go out, Darlene and David spend the night in the dark. (darlene to dan: "mom wants me to go on the pill b/c becky had sex.... she's trying to re-live a gynecological bonding moment she had with becky.")
2) Four similar episodes:
a) Bev gives Roseanne and Jackie $10000 a piece and then says she's moving to Lanford.
b)Molly moves in next door, while Darlene has her sweet 16. Roseanne ends the episode when she streaks through the yard, but accidentally bumps into her new neighbor.
c) Roseanne, Jackie, and Nancy can't find the other $10000 to start the diner, but the episode ends with Bev becoming a 4th partner. Jackie's response to it: "this is the part where the thunder claps and the sky turns black."
d) The diner opens, Nancy comes out as a lesbian, while Roseanne doesn't wan't Bev to move into an old folks' home b/c it makes her feel old. The last scene is when Bev finds out Nancy and Marla are lesbians and doesn't believe it: "oh SURE they are, and I, as the stupid old lady, is supposed to go up to them and say 'oh hello, you nice lesbians.'"
3) Darlene attends a concert with Molly. This episode contains the clip for which Roseanne won her one and only Emmy for most outstanding actress in a comedy series. ("if you want to screw up you're life, go ahead, i don't care. but if you're going out with a connor kid, you're going to be extra careful. cause darlene is one of the few things we own outright.")
4) The two-parter where Fischer beats up Jackie.
5) ROSEANNE'S FATHER DIES.
6) Special guest star: Joan Collins.
7) Roseanne finds out how bad David is living and takes him home.
8) Roseanne finally agrees to let Darlene go to college.
9) In the 6th season, Darlene goes to college, to Roseanne's dismay.
10) Darlene comes home from college while Roseanne is trying to get David and Darlene back together. Meanwhile, Dj is skipping ALOT of school with the help of Darlene.
11) The infamous POT episode, which was NOT lame, thankyouverymuch.
12) DJ jerks off.
13) The thanksgiving episode where bev is pushing jackie to get together with fred and then nana mary says "bev, just because you got knocked up and then got married doesn't mean jackie has to."
14) The episode when Roseanne hits deliquent DJ, who is a deliquent. The episode ends in a "cops" parody.
15) The Xmas episode where Becky becomes a strip-club waitress. The episode ends with their display of the "simple white lights." (tee-hee)
16) Florence Henderson guest-stars as the businesswoman that Roseanne sucks up to, and yet DJ makes fun of the woman's son at school. (Remember that classic scene when Roseanne pretends to scold DJ in front of FLO and her son.)
17) THe three episodes where a) it is discovered that david is living in chicago with darlene b) david confesses to dan and gets kicked out of the house c) dan thinks it over and lets dave move back in (you guys may not remember this too well, but this was among the best three episodes ever written on "Roseanne.")
18) Fred sues for custody of the child. There's a whole man-woman battle in this one that kinda smart.
19) LESBIAN KISS!! Classic provocative episode.
20) Jackie has the baby. Funniest part: when Bev tells Jackie that her name wasn't always Jackie and can't remember what it was originally. ("Mom, you don't even know my name!!???")
21) Bev breaks her hip having sex, which noone knows throughout the episode. Her handicap forces her to stay with Roseanne. The closing scene reveals Bev in an S&M outfit.
22) AND LET'S NOT FORGET: when Jackie tells Roseanne she's pregnant, and she can't tell Fred. It is HILARIOUS when Bev finds out, who is so afraid that Jackie will be forced to wear a scarlet letter. Then at the very end, Jackie tells Fred when he's on the toilet.
Yep, I don't think Roseanne's plastic surgery had anything to do with the show's decline. I honestly think it was the fact that Tom Arnold left the show, which was at the end of the 6th season.
Let's be honest, he sucks, and he wasn't funny. BUT I DO THINK THAT HIS PRESENCE ON THE SHOW somehow grounded Roseanne into producing an above-average show. I am convinced that this is the truth.
If you think about it, when was the show truly above-average in its humor? Seasons 2,3,4,5, and 6. Those were the Tom Arnold years.
Seasons 1 and 7 were ALSO pretty funny, but not in the same way.
Season 1 was funny because Roseanne kept firing writers and demanded nothing less than funny.
Season 7 was funny because many of the episodes were either written or sketched out BEFORE Tom Arnol left in mid-1994.
Season 8 and 9 were specifically NOT funny because A) the cast members were tired B) writers avoided "Roseanne" like the plague because it gained the reputation as one of the worst places to work. So, the show hired any writer they could get. C) The studio execs did not bother to interfere with Roseanne anymore because she demanded entire control of the show and she thought that the smartest way to end the show was to turn the show into a parody of pop-culture. It was her idea that that would be part of the show's natural evolution, to make it sillier and sillier as a way of expressing its personal growth. and D)The cost of production was cut back due to Roseanne's mega-salary, as well as the other bumped salaries for the other cast members. (I think John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf were making between $400,000-500,000 per show. That's a huge chunk out of the budget.)
In fact, the last 20 episodes of "Roseanne," when the show was officially out of the top 25, were a gift from ABC. ABC was considering cancelling the show mid-way through the season because the show's costs heavily outweighed its revenue. ABC lost alot of money on "Roseanne" during 1996-1997.
Roseanne the person thought this was funny, I think.
Where was I? OH YEA, Roseanne's plastic surgery had NOTHING to do with the show's decline. Nor does it indicate the show's decline. "Roseanne" had 2 of its best years following Roseanne's plastic surgery.
If you want to know an approximate indicator of when "Roseanne" started to go bad, it was when Roseanne changed her hair from pitch-black to that unhip, grammy, shoulder-length brown. Her face also suddenly had a bleached complexion too. This occured in the middle of the 7th season.
The *ONLY* classic episode from that period on was the episode where they find out that Bev is an alcoholic, which incidentally was the first or second episode where we see Roseanne with her grammy hair-do.
Anyway, just let me say:
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE STOP SAYING THIS SHOW STARTED SUCKING WITH THE PLASTIC SURGERY. That is SO not true. Hell, the new Becky didn't even ruin this show.
Let's just differentiate the stages of this show and recognize that the "suckiness" began a bit further down the road from "plastic surgery" and "new becky."
DON'T BE STUPID, GUYS!

I have to say I like seasons one - seven but only the first half of seven the ones that aired after Feb 95 were stale and the last few episodes Couch Potatoe, Happy Trailers, Birds and The Frozen Bees, Sherwood Schwartz - A loving Tribute were terrible, it is strange that after Tom Arnold left (I know he was an *******) the show got strange like all of season 9 and the Halloween episode of season eight was the worst piece of tv I have ever seen, besides that godawful WORKING.
I loved the show when I could relate to it, but I have said it before if season nine was funny I could have cared less if she was fighting pirates at sea, the fact is I didn't laugh, the scripts were terrible and the jokes fell flat. The only episodes I like from season 9 are Millions From Heaven, Satan Darling (Only bits written by Jennifer Saunders not the Rosemary's Baby part) and Into That Goodnight (Parts 1&2)
The episodes I liked the best are the sex ones and anything Joss Whedon wrote, he always got the relationships between the sisters (both pairs) right.

I personally liked seasons 4-6 the best because there is that transitioning period. The season finale of 4 was kindof a cliff hanger, because of the bike shop being on bad legs. It paved the way for the two part premiere where Becky married Mark, and Roseanne, Jackie and Nancy owned the Lunch Box. As far as the Becky thing goes, I really don't think the show suffered because of Sarah Chalke. I think that the new Becky and Darlene had some very funny moments in seasons six and seven. It was just the fact that they had lousy writers. Both Beckys were great, IMO.

It's funny, I said in a previous post that my favorite season is around year 6 and 8. Season 6 is when Roseanne did have plastic surgery. Anyone thought that Roseanne did look attractive around the 1993 time?

Becky #1 returns to series.
Roseanne: Where the h--l have you been?
Becky#1: Don't yell at me. I was getting this(blanket)
Roseanne: Well it seems like you've been gone for 3 years!
------------------------------------------------
Roseanne: Well Dan we have 2, count em two daughters in college.
Dan: Boy are we gonna have some explaining to do at the next white trash meeting.
------------------------------------------------
Darlene: The little booger (D.J)is peeping at me now!
Becky: Why?
-------------------------------------------------
Darlene: I've been making jokes about this family since I could talk, before that, I would point and laugh.

I thought Roseanne looked good after the facelift and I thought season five (92/93) after she had the facelift done, was one of the strongest and funniest years of the show.

Yeah, she did look a lot better after the plastic surgery. But why was she so tan during the 6th season???

I think she was tan because they shot most of the sixth season in the summer. Because Laurie Metcalf was due in November 1993 and the pregnancy lasted on screen until March 1994, they must have shot a lot of it before then.
It doesn't really make sense for her to be tan in the middle of a Illinois winter though

She also had a very noticable tan when season 5 started (among other "noticable things") and it disappeared by the middle of that season where it looked to me like she had even more "noticable things" done to her at the same time the tan faded. I never looked real closely, so maybe it was just the makeup, because she wore way more when the tan faded. (Compare how she looks when the season opener has Becky married and how she looks when Jacky got beaten up by Fisher.)
Anyways, my favorite season is 3 or 4. The jokes and many plots were still great during 5 and 6, but I never did quite get over Becky #1 leaving so those following years were never my ultimate favorites.
