90's music videos

Im a huge 90's music video fanatic and i read that Universal is releasing a dvd set called the Director's Label Series. Is anybody familiar with it? It features the best music video directors in the past 15 years. Anyways, i have the Spike Jonze set and i love it. Its a really cool concept for a dvd set. its about time music video directors get the credit they deserve for their work. anybody else into music video directing or the Director's label series?

I think the concept is extremely cool.

While, IMO, the 1980's was all about video stars (MJ, Madonna, Duran Duran, Eurythmics, David Bowie, Culture Club, etc..), the 90's was more about the directors than the artists. There are exceptions to the rule like Missy Elliott, Eminem and Bjork, but for the most part, videos in the past 12-13 years have been more about the director's vision with people like Spike Jonze and Mark Romanek. Most people remember the Jonze video where the guy is running down the street on fire, but not that many people remember the band who did song (Wax).

However, I do think mainstream videos took a turn for the worse in 1999 when "Making The Video" premiered. Most of the videos on that show have been fluff, though there have been exceptions. Seems like most of the Making The Video specials have followed the same cliches.

Ya know the Alanis Morrisete video for her single "Hand In My Pocket?" I knew an actress who plays one of the nuns.

I don't like Alanis Morissette, so I'm obviously not saying this to impress anyone. :) :D

I think 1996 was my favorite year for music videos. Floria Sigismondi has got to be one of my favorite directors.

naw, not too off topic. It involves music videos, and I do remember the video for Waterfalls, although I'm more of a rock guy myself.

Jonathan Glazer's work from the mid-ninties was amazing. I think it was 96 when the Street Spirit video came out -- if anyone hasn't seen it, watch it as soon as you can, he utilizes the coolest trick ever in video. Also liked his Virtual Insanity video by Jamiroquai with the moving floor, that video was huge back then.

96 was the last good year for MTV. I used to just love watching 120 Minutes every Sunday night. It all went to hell in 97 when Spice Girls, Hanson and Puff Daddy (or whatever the hell he calls himself now) came out. The biggest blow was in the fall of 97 when MTV moved it's headquarters to Times Square and it stopped being about music period.

I secretly like some of their songs too. But when Wannabe came out and hit #1, it officially spelled the end of music as we knew it, everything became pre-fab pop or hip hop and MTV stopped actually playing videos, and now look at it and videos are rarely shown.

Mark Romanek did Are You Gonna Go My Way? That's one of my favorite videos from back then, loved the concept and the song. Also used to cover that song in one of my junior high school rock bands, lol, although it was a bit :lol:

I guess that makes sense, Romanek has always had a knack for utilizing light and colors to capture a mood more than just using more obvious triggers.
