Stryper is back

perhaps one of the more notorious acts of the 80's hair bands was Stryper. The fundies in bumblebee costumes that threw Bibles into the audience. Well, they're back. I remember confusing these guys with Slayer when I was little, LOL. I thought Slayer was the Christian band.

I wonder how many people in the 80's bought "To Hell With The Devil" thinking it was some dark demonic record along the lines of Mayhem or Carcass, and then wind up with Honestly which was basically a Styx ballad.

Christian bookstores found the album cover "satanic", so they changed it.

The guys of Stryper insist that their name comes from an acronym meaning Strength Through Redemption Yielding Peace and Eternal Righteousness, something like that. Maybe they were trying to cash in on the popular "band names with evil acronyms" bit like AC/DC, KISS, and WASP. Maybe they were deliberately trying to cash in on the Slayer connection as well! Like they WANTED to be confused with them! :lol:

well, believe it or Dont, I bought "To Hell with the Devil" - but i wasn't confused, i was actually a fan (i even have the "Honestly" single - in all of its Hot Pink glory!)

Oz Foxx rocks! but I dont think that I'll be picking up this comeback album :lol:

I actually saw Stryper in all their bumblebee glory back in 1985 in Seattle, right before they got huge. I was a big fan of their songs, but I realized later their lyrics could stand a ton of improvement.

The one thing that really pissed me off about them was an article I read in Guitar World a few months ago, a side article along one about Brian "Head" Welch of Korn finding Jesus and leaving the band. In it, the guys of Stryper said that they were the "positive alternative" to bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest with their "negative" messages in their lyrics. It made me want to scream, Maiden and Priest did NOT write negative lyrics!!!!!! Priest's lyrics were about empowerment, making the listener feel as if they could rise above the grind. Maiden was about thought-provoking themes borrowed from literature and history--and in fact, Steve Harris of Maiden was doing the church the biggest favor with writing a song warning of the rise of the Antichrist, "Number of the Beast". He had a frightening dream about it and wrote one of the biggest classic metal songs of all time based on it. HE WAS DOING THE CHURCH'S JOB!!!!
