Genesis' "The Platinum Collection" - U.S. release September 13, 2005.

Remember the days before Phil Collins became lame? No? Well, he was cool once, I swear! I mean, come on - let's forget about that Tarzan crap for a second; this is the guy who sang "Mama" and "Land Of Confusion!"

The Platinum Collection, a three-disc, career-spanning Genesis compilation, which saw release in the UK in November of 2004, will finally be given a North American release via Rhino on September 13 (after having been delayed six months due to U.S. rights issues over songs from the first album).

The set is in (mostly) reverse-chronological order, beginning with four tracks from 1991's We Can't Dance (the band's swan song with Collins) and concluding with "The Knife" from 1970's Trespass.

The album even includes one song featuring lead vocalist Ray Wilson (the Gary Cherone of Genesis), in the form of "Calling All Stations," from the 1997 album of the same name.

The only downside to the set is that there are only nine tracks featuring original lead singer Peter Gabriel. Those are all on disc three.

Most of the pre-Invisible Touch tracks have been given new stereo mixes by engineer Nick Davis.

I like all eras of Genesis (except maybe the Ray Wilson era, but I don't count it ;)), and I don't have any of their albums, except The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and Genesis (1983). So maybe this will be a good starting point for me.

I've been looking forward to this release for almost a year and am glad that, after all the delays, it looks like it will finally see the light of day. That's a good thing, because I was about to pay big bucks to get an import copy from England.

This sounds like a cool collection. I have every Genesis album (except for the 1997 one), but I might just get this collection to have the remixs of the classic Gabriel songs.

And I always thought I bashed Billy Joel too often. :lol: Phil recorded some really good songs during the 1980's like "In the Air Tonight", "Easy Lover", "Against All Odds", "Two Hearts", "I Wish it Would Rain Down", "Seperate Lives" and "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven".

Oddly enough, his biggest selling album, No Jacket Required, featured his worst pre-Tarzan music like "One More Night", "Sussudio" and "Take Me Home" (truly awful songs). puke:

I've heard mixed reviews about the import version - which has the same tracklisting and remixes. Apparently, some fans don't like the remixes.

I've always thought they should do a single-disc "Best Of" of the Gabriel years. Turn It On Again: The Hits is mainly drawn from the Phil Collins era, so there's never been a best of anthology solely focused on the band's progressive era.

I'm not a big fan of "One More Night," or Genesis' softer stuff like "Hold On My Heart" and "Throwing It All Away." I would, however, take it over Calling All Stations any day.

And, after all the Phill Collins-bashing, I do want to state that I think his first solo album is a masterpiece.

Against All Odds is truly one of the greatest power ballads of all time IMO. One More Night is okay but just another ballad to me.

The set looks good, but I would like it better if they had included "No Reply at All" and "Just a Job to Do", two of my favorite Genesis songs. Both of those tracks still get a good bit of radio airplay, so it baffles me why they were left off this collection.

don't get me wrong, I do like some of Phil and Genesis' music, I just think the man has jumped the musical shark in a way NO artist has even tried. In less than 20 years he went from Peter Gabriel calibre to being lumped alongside Michael Bolton.. I love the stuff from the early 80's he did solo and with Genesis and also like a bit of the 1984-1988 stuff such as Against All Odds, Tonight Tonight Tonight, Land Of Confusion, Seperate Lives, Don't Lose My Number, Easy Lover, Two Hearts, etc... But as the 90's came along he really lost it musically, the last song I can say I like is No Son Of Mine.

I just got the set, and I really like it. I was afraid I was going to dislike the new mixes of the songs, which were panned heavily at another board I frequent. But they turned out really good and accentuated the individual tracks.

I didn't like the reverse chronological order. I realize why they ordered the tracks that way (more people prefer the Phil Collins-helmed era, and would be unlikely to listen to discs that started with Peter Gabriel stuff).

I went ahead and put the tracks in chronological order, and I think they work better this way:
