Ketih Moon and John Bonham - Strange Coincidences

Ever notice some of the strange similarities between Keith Moon and John Bonham?

Both were drummers in heavy rock bands.

Both were the most essential ingredients in the chemisty of their respective bands.

Both were in bands whose lead singer had a first name beginning with the letter "R."

Both died on a Thursday in September of substance abuse.

Both were in their early thirties when they died.

The only difference? John Bonham's band had the good sense to call it quits when he died. ohno:

True--Kenny Jones?? As if!! "You Better, You Bet"? Yeah, ranks right up there with "Tommy," "Who's Next", and "Live At Leeds". :rolleyes:

Another point: Both were very colorful personalities who had lived out the rock star image to extremes--both could be unpredictable and violent.

Personally,I think Bonham was a far better drummer then Moon. Of course, the fact that I have never been much of a Who fan and that I love Led Zeppelin probably plays some part in my thinking this. Bonham's drumming is so powerful that it gives me goosebumps. When I listen to "Whole Lotta Love" I literally get chills down my spine. Neil Peart is the only other drummer that has that effect on me.

Personally,I think Bonham was a far better drummer then Moon. Of course, the fact that I have never been much of a Who fan and that I love Led Zeppelin probably plays some part in my thinking this. Bonham's drumming is so powerful that it gives me goosebumps. When I listen to "Whole Lotta Love" I literally get chills down my spine. Neil Peart is the only other drummer that has that effect on me.The interesting thing about John Bonham was that he was the man who made Led Zeppelin HEAVY--he was kicked out of various bands "for playing too loud" before Led Zeppelin--and he proudly kept a list of the bands who fired him! :lol: The thing about him was that the band also would do things like have him record his drumming from far away in a good wide echo-y room for that HUGE sound. The microphone would be placed far away and would capture his mountainous drumming.

The interesting thing about John Bonham was that he was the man who made Led Zeppelin HEAVY--he was kicked out of various bands "for playing too loud" before Led Zeppelin--and he proudly kept a list of the bands who fired him! :lol: The thing about him was that the band also would do things like have him record his drumming from far away in a good wide echo-y room for that HUGE sound. The microphone would be placed far away and would capture his mountainous drumming.

Also, Bonham was more technically adept than Moon, as Moon's greatest strength was his overall power. Yet, he wasn't always precise in timekeeping.

Personally, though - and you knew this was coming - Family's Rob Townsend could drum circles around both. Not only could he keep perfect time and play loud simultaneously, but he could play like he had four hands - and his drum kit was small comapred to that of, say, Bonzo or Ginger Baker!
