I'm surprised that there is so much obsession over American Idol in here, but NOBODY seems to care about Rockstar:INXS. I hate all things Idol (even though I did like Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone") but yet this show is a bit more fun, because it's about the ROCK STAR life, not the POP STAR.
It's just kinda funny to see people so obsessed over people on a reality show that three months earlier, they never knew existed. Yet a reality talent contest about a group that were scoring hits when Kelly, Fantasia and Carrie were in kindergarten gets the ignore treatment here. I don't know if any of the Idol's will have a song as famous as Need You Tonight or What You Need.

I like American Idol for 3 reasons:
1. the music
2. the people
3. Ryan Seacrest
I prefer pop music over rock, country, etc. and I like the chemistry between the contestants, judges, and Ryan. AI is more of a 'family' reality show, with the tour and all. Its just all around fun.

I like both shows. Rockstart because of INXS..but I was also a big fan of Kelly Clarkson the first season of AI.

I was just saying that it's funny that people are so obsessed with Idol, yet another reality talent show comes along and nobody is buzzing about that, but yet they're continuing to talk about Carrie and the sort. I was wondering why people haven't been giving Rockstar INXS a chance while they're being held over in anticipation for the next AI season

one thing about Rockstar I prefer to AI is that "vocal talent" isn't everything, but style, songwriting ability, etc... as well. With AI, if you don't have a Celine Dion or Josh Grobin style voice, you're deemed unworthy (I would much rather have an "okay" singer who sings from their heart and soul than somebody like Celine or Whitney who has a great voice, and have never written a song in their lives). Plus, having to perform ones own compositions shows that you have to have ability in that dept. as well, while on AI, the winners are supposed to perform Diane Warren, David Foster castoffs given to them. I prefer it when artists perform their own songs instead of just what they're told to sing.

Well AI is a singing competition so there's no need to have to go out of the way and write your own songs. On AI, they have them sing other people's songs to see what different types of music they could sing. Because AI is a singing competition it would be stupid to let someone through that has a horrible voice but can write good songs.

I checked it out, and didn't really like it. There was no thrill, excitement, or anything. Half of the people sound the same -- while on Idol, each contestant has a unique genre and identity. And, it isn't just about vocal ability on Idol. It's about star quality. And we are probably still obsessing about it since it was a so great, and we're not obsessing about INXS, because maybe it's just not our cup of tea.

well, that's the problem with it IMO. You can have the best voice in the world but if you aren't singing from the heart, you may as well be lipsynching. According to AI, if you don't have a perfect singing voice, you're no good, audiences have proven differently. The same critics who find Celine to be homogenic and motionless because she has never sung anything besides what she's been told to sing find someone like Sheryl Crow who doesn't have the best voice in the world but can write a good song to be fantastic.
I think all around talent is more important than "does he/she have a pretty voice" because there are plenty of artists who don't have "good singing voices" that many critics would deem more talented than those who sound great, Bob Dylan and Yoko Ono both come to mind. Neither of them would make it pas the AI auditions but yet critics around the globe consider them talented for their songwriting, production, etc...

No, as David said, AI is also based on star quality. You can't really say the point of it when you dont even watch it. Nadia didnt have the best voice but she had great star quality and she got 8th place. Heck, BO didnt even have the best voice, but he got 2nd place. As we have said, Rockstar just isn't our cup of tea, and just because you like it doesn't mean we all have to run to our TVs and watch it. So what if we like one show but dont like another? Is there a problem with people that dont have the same opinion as you?

maybe I'd stomach Idol if there were three changes:
1. Ryan Seacrest - I HATE THIS MAN!!! Dave Navarro is far cooler (who is basically the Ryan on Rockstar). I can't stand metrosexuals who are so obsessed with appearence.
2. Considering how young AI fans are, I don't think they realize the irony of having Paula Abdul judging a singing contest, those of us who remember her days as a pop star find it laughable that she of all people is telling people they can or cannot sing, she was the J. Lo of the late 80's/early 90's.
3. not the shows fault, and I don't see it here but I've seen it on other boards, but the fact that every year (until now) became this huge race debate. People had to make AI political (I remember "people voted Tamyra off because they're all racist and don't want a black idol" in 2002, and also a huge race war between Clay and Ruben fans) instead of just accepting the show as mindless entertainment. People who had to make AI based on race instead of talent completely sucked any enjoyment I could have out of the show since people get so damn sensitive if the finalists are of two races.

People get sensetive during every Idol finale, the Bo and Carrie finale heat was just as bad as the Fantasia and Diana finale heat.

I love Rock Star...although I prefer rock to pop, so it's not surprising. Plus, it's produced by Mark Burnett, which is usually a good sign. Plus, the Rock Star performers are much more seasoned and professional...I've never bought any Idol's CD (may buy Bo's) but there are at least three people on Rock Star who I would buy a CD from (Ty, Marty, Jordis).
As for your points about Idol, I completely agree on Ryan Seacrest. I hate him. He actually bought himself a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and AI actually did a tribute reel to him because of it! Come on.
I'm a teen, but I've seen and heard Paula Abdul before Idol...you're 100% right. Add to that all her wacky, "is she high?"-type behavior, and she has no business on this show.
All I remember about race was Elton John called America racist after the bottom three was Jennifer, Fantasia, and Latoya. Did he ever think that maybe their votes were too split up? The facts that a) Fantasia is horrible, and b) Jennifer is good but not great; I didn't see the big fuss.

exactly, I love it when people say I've never watched the show (such as Rurry's post saying "you can't say the point of it when you've never watched it)", I have (even though most times I change the channel as soon as Ryan comes onscreen), it was terrible, and Ryan Seacrest was perhaps the part of the show that annoyed me most. The problem is, I've lived through two waves of teen pop and for that I prefer artists who have to work their way to the top instead of those who just had everything handed to them because of their looks.
It is still funny that people don't understand the fuss about why older people find it funny to have Paula on the show, but yet if you brought up replacing her with Britney or J. Lo, they'd think you were smoking crack.... Paula Abdul was exactly the same thing, just a different era. Paula's first album succeeded only because she had a ghost vocalist on it (and yes guys, I admit to owning Forever Your Girl, I grew up on 80's pop music), but yet Paula did all the vocals on her second album Spellbound, and it was dreadful. One listen to her hyperventalating when trying to reach the high notes on "Blowing Kisses In The Wind" on that album is enough proof to show why people think it's funny that she of all people is critiquing the singing voices of others.

Roseanne singing the National Anthem > Paula Abdul's entire career :p
I've heard from someone who attended the Rock Star taping that they don't do too well tonight--there was some booing going on.

Who can even argue that American Idol can hold a candle to ROckstar!?!?
First of all Rockstar has legitimate rockstars on it: dave navarro, and contestants who are musicians, not just singers.
these people can write songs as well as sing them!
plus, no SImon! Thank GOD!
also, American idol is a TIRED idea.
ROckstar is the superior show.

I missed it last night because I had to do some paid work (I work at home but usually don't watch tv at the time), how bad was JD?
However, I don't see why "the discussion should end" because it's :::gasp::: a reality show that isn't American Idol. For the love of God, 90% of the threads on the main Reality page are AI, and the sad thing is, AI has been off two months and there's at least 10 reality shows in current rotation nobody's talking about.
I am glad other people prefer Rock Star here. I don't see how AI fans can bash INXS, they had a lot of memorable hits in the day, the KICK album was gigantic. They were a good rock band that :::gasp::: paid their dues and worked their way up to become stars, their first hit single was on their third album for crying out loud. I grew up with INXS' music and remember being upset when Michael Hutchense died in 1997. They accomplished a lot but kids seem to discard them because they were from another era. I'm sure if it was "Rock Star: Good Charlotte", you wouldn't get people to shut up about it.

I dont really care if you guys talk about it, but the "You guys are stupid for watching AI and not Rockstar" needs to end.

I wonder if the contestants are all die-hard INXS fans who know the songs by heart, or if they learned them as their "in case you're up for elimination" tune. I mean, songs like What You Need, Need You Tonight, New Sensation, Devil Inside were BIG HITS, surely everyone up for consideration knows those songs because those are the ones that made INXS what they were, but the second girl tonight performed an INXS song I wasn't familiar with, and even tho Elegantly Wasted was arguably their last "hit", it wasn't so big that you'd think a girl would know the song on cue.

Well, before he started seeing, he saw his sister in the audience who he hadn't seen for two years. So he basically cracked and sang in a very down, monotone voice until he got to the chorus where he couldn't even reach the notes. Then Dave said soemthing about how he shouldn't be so cocky; singing "We Are the Champions" wasn't a good idea. Then JD made some stupid thing about how "We [the rock stars] are the champions. It's a tribute to us."

Go Marty! He's far and away the best right now, although I'm guessing Suzie gets the encore--she was great too. I was disappointed in Jordis, who's good, but overrated. Last night was her worst.
The great thing about this show is it always has great music, which isn't always a guarantee with American Idol. Plus, the houseband kicks ass. These guys are excellent! The only stuff I don't like is the INXS songs on elimination night...I only like one INXS song ("What You Need") so other than when Daphna sang it, elimination nights are worthless except for the encore.
