is it me or does it seem like movies have much shorter shelf lives than in the past?

Now a HIT movie will be out of the top 10 and into the $1 theaters within a month.

I remember the summer of 1989, when Batman came out. Batman grossed $250 million (which would be $350-400 million today) and while it came out in June, it was still playing the cinemas in October. I remember my sister taking me to see it in October 1989, after it had been out four months.

Even Star Wars Episode III is just about out of the first-run theaters already, because they seem to get rid of titles so fast. Movies like The Perfect Man are already playing the Dollar Cinemas here and they've barely been out.

Kinda sucks that movies are dead after the second weekends these days, when years ago, they'd at least last 2 or 3 months if successful.

I've never in my life seen a discount theatre-the only equivalent is a matinee or discount day (tuesdays usually) and when a movie has been out forever, a PG or U (G or PG-13) it goes into a Kid's Club.

well, even as recently as 6 or 7 years ago, it would've at least been given a second weekend to see if maybe it'd pick up. I remember "Ever After" with Drew Barrymore BOMBED it's opening weekend, making something like $5 million with wide release, but unlike these days, the theaters didn't discard it by the second weekend, and the movie ended up picking up a bit and ended up becoming a success after all and stayed in the top 10 for 2 months even tho it was never a top 5 film. We never know, maybe The Perfect Man could've been the same way.

Well you can blame Hollywood, but its also the consumer's fault. We're the ones going to see movies the first weekend movies come out. Why do you think Titanic was so successful? It was in the top 10 for like 18 weeks. That would never happen again.

well, it's the theaters fault more than the consumers. They have to devote 6 (of 18) screens to a title when it comes out.

Star Wars petered out fast because the theaters gave up on it too fast. Even The Phantom Menace stayed in first run for about 3 months. How do you expect a movie to come near Titanic if they are dropping them after 2 months even if they gross $400 million.

I read that in the 1960's, "The Sound Of Music" stayed in first-run for FOUR STRAIGHT YEARS!!!! Imagine, that'd be like the first Harry Potter or Lord Of The Rings still playing in the theater now.
