Mel B a Maybe for Live 8

Tue Jun 21, 8:33 PM ET

Thanks to Scary Spice, Live 8 is in danger of a girl power deficit.

Melanie Brown, the Scary fifth of the former international chart-topping pop group the Spice Girls, is the lone holdout for a reunion at next month's London concert, according to organizer Bob Geldof.

Geldolf appeared on the U.K. TV show Richard & Judy (Britain's equivalent to Live with Regis and Kelly) and said that Mel B. was having "difficulty going back to something she did in the past. I'll call her during the week and if she can't do it, she can't do it."

He said that Brown was working on unspecified project in California.

Geldof says if he fails to convince Scary to join the aid effort, she will not be replaced and the other four Spices-- Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham, Emma "Baby Spice" Bunton, Melanie "Sporty Spice" Chisholm and Geri "Ginger Spice" Halliwell.

"It's got to be all or nothing," Geldof told the BBC this week.

The Spice Girls debuted in 1995, evolving from a giddy Brit novelty act to a worldwide pop sensation. With singles like "Wannabe" and "Say You'll Be There," their debut disc, Spice, sold some 7.3 million copies in the U.S. alone.

They followed up with another hit album, Spiceworld, which also was parlayed into the campy, Hard Day's Night-inspired film, Spice World.

But things went from spicy to downright salty in 1998, when Halliwell quit the group amid internal tension. As a quartet, the remaining girls trotted out their third and final disc, Forever, in 2000. The album tanked and their subsequent solo careers fizzled.

With or without the Spice Girls, Geldof's free Live 8 shows will feature an unprecedented lineup of stars--including Paul McCartney, Dave Matthews Band, Stevie Wonder, U2, Coldplay, Madonna, Mariah Carey, the Who and a reunited Pink Floyd--performing to raise awareness of Third World problems.

Concerts will take place July 2 in London, Philadelphia, Paris, Berlin, Rome and, as of last week, Tokyo, Johannesburg and Toronto. On Tuesday, organizers announced that the Toronto show take place at Park Place (formerly Molson Park) and feature Canadian acts like the Barenaked Ladies, Bryan Adams, the Tragically Hip, Simple Plan and, appearing via satellite from Las Vegas, Celine Dion. Native sons Dan Aykroyd and Tom Green will host the show. Motley Crue and Deep Purple are also on the bill.

There will be an additional Live 8 gig in Edinburgh on July 6 featuring Annie Lennox, Dido and Travis.

The concerts are expected to be carried live on AOL and Viacom-owned cable stations, including MTV.

I love how they say, "Brown was working on unspecified project in California." Probably flipping burgers at the local Jack-In-The-Box!

Looks like Toronto isn't getting the Stones afterall as was rumoured. I prefer Deep Purple anyway.

Why are they so stubborn?

I think it's more just the one who's being so stubborn about it. I don't know what the big deal is - it's like she thinks she's too good to reunite - meanwhile, where would she be even now without the Spice Girls giving her the start to a career?

Besides, its for charity and only a one-time deal - its not like its going to damage any new career she might be working on (which again, I wonder about - sure hasn't put out anything recently)!

It's always one or the other. Just a few weeks ago Victoria and Ginger were making comments that they wouldn't do it either, and now that they are agreeing, Mel B decides not to do it?

I know!! Meanwhile, it's not as though they were THAT great!!

And what's up with that Victoria anyway - with all she's got - and I don't think I've ever seen her crack even a smile! She always looks so dour in photos!

I don't necessarily think it's that she's "too good" to do a reunion as much as she's still trying to establish an identity outside of the Spice Girls (notice she's still referred to as "Scary Spice" instead of Melanie Brown). Geri, Mel C and Emma have had successful careers as dance music artists and Victoria is known as the luxury-living wife of a soccer superstar, they have come far enough from their Spice Girl pasts that they can look back and be all "oh what the hey, why not do it?", but Melanie B hasn't really found her post-Spice niche to fulfill before going back and doing it one more time.

Well that's it.

If the Spice Girls aren't going to be there, they might as well cancel the entire Live 8 concert!

Actually I usually do hear her referred to by her proper name. I think they just used it for this headline because of it being a reunion of the girls and that was her name in the group.
That's odd that she hasn't found her niche yet - how long does it take - the group has been broken up for 7 - 8 years now! You'd think she'd be the most happy about getting some publicity if she's still forging a career in entertainment.

Maybe she just wants out of the industry!

I doubt that because she is releasing her second solo album in the UK next week.

They did? I got my information from a BBC interview done with Geri published on November 11, 1998. She was talking about her leaving the group. I don't think they really did that much after she left. They were still popular, but not recording or still holding concerts - just appearances - here's the link:

:eek2: YIKES! That's GOT to be some sort of mockup - otherwise if someone had seen that pic when they were choosing their names, she would have ended up with Scary Spice instead of Posh!!!

Again then - wouldn't the timing for some extra exposure and publicity be perfect? Her own CD is released, and then about 10 days later the public could see her - one appearance isn't going to make people think she's still just a Spice Girl. I think it would help boost sales of her CD if anything.

Oh - o.k. - that explains it. It was a little odd during that period whether they were still all together or not I remember that. I just remember a co-worker of mine being dragged to a concert with his little girl in mid-1998 because she was afraid she wouldn't get a chance to see them again with Geri leaving. ;)

they pressed on for awhile after Geri. They went to #11 with the single "Goodbye" which was the first post-Geri single (and ironically enough, "Goodbye" was also their last top 100 single). They released one more album, "Forever" in late 2000 but the album bombed, but MTV did give "Holler" some airplay when it came out.

However, it was never the same after Geri left

pretty sad that 15 years ago, MTV would've given it nonstop coverage all day, but now they wouldn't wanna be bothered with something music-oriented when they can air endless Inferno, Date My Mom and Wildboyz reruns

Yeah - I thought that too! Didn't the original Live AID run the entire day and into the evening? I remember them flipping from the different concerts in different countries.

How can they even begin to cover most acts in two hours? There's several countries involved? Hmmmmmm....I smell a DVD in the making and that's where they plan to make the most money - by the sale of DVDs that cover most or all acts. That sucks.

MTV is in dire need of new ownership. One of the reasons record sales are so poor these days is because MTV doesn't play music!!! Do you really think Thriller would've sold 27 million without MTV? what about Madonna, Janet, Guns N Roses, Aerosmith (granted they were popular in the 70's, but nothing like in the late 80's and 90's), Nirvana, Eminem, Dr. Dre, etc.... none of them would've been AS big if it hadn't been for MTV bringing them into our living rooms every day.

If MTV and VH1 won't actually promote music artists, who are the labels to complain that people aren't buying music they aren't hearing?
