Cassidy Turns Himself In On Murder, Weapons Charges

Rapper a suspect in April 15 fatal shooting in Philadelphia.

As expected, Cassidy has turned himself in. The rapper, whose real name is Barry Reese, surrendered early Friday afternoon (June 17) to Philadelphia police on charges of murder, attempted murder, reckless endangerment, aggravated assault, conspiracy and weapons possession.

The rapper is expected to remain behind bars at least until he is arraigned, which police estimate won't be until late Friday or even Saturday, since booking and processing will take up to 12 hours. At his arraignment, Cassidy will enter a plea and a discussion about bail will take place. The Philadelphia district attorney's office plans to request that Cassidy be held without bail, as it does with all murder cases, and a spokesperson for the district attorney said it is "very likely" the request will be granted by the judge.

Cassidy is a suspect in the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Desmond Hawkins, who was killed during a gunfight between two groups of men on April 15 (see "Cassidy Wanted For Murder"). Philly police claim Cassidy and two other men, armed with .45 and .40 caliber handguns, 9 mm pistols, AK-47 assault rifles and 7.62 mm rifles, fired on three unarmed men during an argument behind a house in the rapper's northwest Philadelphia neighborhood. During the melee, Hawkins was shot in the back and killed. The other two men were treated at hospitals for gunshot wounds and released.

Cassidy's second album, I'm a Hustla, is due June 28.

It was so pathetic to see so many rappers locked up in the article i read. XXL has 50 Cent & Tony Yayo on the cover right now talkin about rappers that are locked up. Tony Yayo is a part of G Unit & he used to be locked up. The thing that's so ignorant about these rappers is that they continue to get locked up over dumb s**t because their ignorant asses keep hangin in the ghetto. Stay the f**k outta the ghetto & away from ignorant blacks. They wouldn't get themselves in these situations if they stayed away from ignorant blacks. I think the thing about being a rapper is that they have a reputation to look after because they brag about being hard on their songs & braggin about the stuff they got so i guess they feel they gotta keep it real by acting hard & hangin in the ghetto with ignorant blacks so people won't think they're soft or sellouts because they moved out the hood & they don't hang with ignorant blacks.

Meanwhile, making something good out of yourself isn't selling out at all. They should be mentors to others wanting to get out. Nobody talks about positive educated rappers like KRS One, Paris, Wise Intelligent of Poor Righteous Teachers, Chuck D, The Coup, Dead Prez, Kam, Da Lench Mob. None of these rappers get talked about because ignorant rappers sell & positive rappers don't. That's whats so ignorant about blacks. We don't wanna listen to rappers that tell us to read books & educate ourselves. We'd rather listen to rappers talk about how many women they've had sex with, how many dudes they've killed, how many cars they got, how much weed they smoked, how much jewelry they got, how much alcohol they've drank, how many times they've been to the club. When i look at rap videos nowadays, it's so sad to see every video is the same. Every video is a party atmosphere with black women half naked shaking their asses. Every song is the same. Nobody raps about anything with substance. I don't even watch rap videos anymore anyway. Another thing i'm tired of is rappers using the same producers with wack beats.

Wow - it is SO refreshing to hear a black person who "gets it"!! I totally agree with everything you've said! I don't think whites hold black people down (yes, there was a time when it was like that, but not now). They hold themselves down (and of course, I'm not referring to all blacks). There's more black on black crime than black/white. Statistics don't lie.
And yeah, we don't hear about positive rappers. The only one I really knew of is Will Smith and maybe Lil Bow Wow - its the gangsta crap that gets all the attention. Even ebonics - can't you just speak English with some slang like everybody else guys???? It's makes them sound so stupid.

Will Smith has always been criticized by hardcore ignorant rappers because they think he's soft because he doesn't curse. He curses in movies but he doesn't curse in his rap songs. Ain't nothin wrong with a rapper not cursing. Every rapper doesn't have to curse. Rakim is one of the greatest mc's of all time to me & he didn't curse earlier in his career. He cursed only on his last album The Master which came out 6 years ago. Nobody never criticized him because he didn't curse. I don't come to work to make friends. I come to work to do a job. If that's all they can talk about, that's sad. Even some of the older black men be talkin about that too. What type of role models are they being to young black men? What kind of example are they setting for young black men by always talkin about that? There's more to life than sex & women. I hate it when blacks call each other N......s. My best friend in middle school was Mulatto and one day she got in a fight with a black girl from the subsidized housing area (it would be considered ghetto). The girl had called her a "Paki" so Lee shot back with N....r. It cut through me like a knife. I asked why she had called her that and she just said because she IS one. I guess that's the first it hit me that its used like "white trash" is, but still just sounds so much more hurtfull. It kills me that if a white were to use it, they could lose their life over it, but blacks (those kind anyway) say it to each other all the time. It really bothers me. How are we ever going to overcome this stereotyping crap when they continue it themselves.

You know what, if you have to be a "sellout" to your brothers, then so be it - its YOUR life to make the best of - don't let them drag you down. We get mad when other races of people call us that word but we call ourselves that word everyday. You see how ignorant we are? If i could do all over again, i wish my parents would've never put me in a all black high school because i think being in a all black school is bad because you're around too many ignorant blacks & you'll never learn nothin. I know i didn't learn nothin when i was in high school. It was hard for me to concentrate on my school work when i had ignorance around me everyday. There was so many people i wanted to fight when i was in high school but i'm glad i didn't because i would've probably got expelled for fighting so much but people be saying some stuff that will provoke you to fight. White people have no idea what it's like to be around ignorant blacks everyday in a environment like that. It's even worse when you have to live around them. I went to a high school that was mixed with whites, blacks, foreigners half of my 9th grade year & i was mad that my parents moved because i think that was a good environment for me being in a mixed high school. It's also sad when ignorant blacks only wanna be rappers, drug dealers, basketball players, football players for a career. They act like they're no other careers out there. There's this rap group called The Coup that did a song called Not Yet Free 12 years ago. On the song, one of the group members named Boots said ni**as, thugs, dope dealers & pimps, basketball players, rap stars & simps. That's what little black boys are made of hahahahahahahahahaha. One of my first jobs was at a company who's underlying and unspoken policy was to hire whites only. It made me sick. There was a guy who came up from Chicago who had worked at the company we were the distributor for for 10 years. He knew every part number off by heart, and was PERFECT for the job. Of course he didn't get it. I wanted to report the company it turned my stomach so much. Its not just in the black community. I think we ALL become ignorant when we're separated.
After that I went to a company who hired everyone. My two best friends were blacks and I learned so much about their culture (Jamaican & Trinidadian). It opened up a whole new world to me. I made so many wonderful friends from all different backgrounds. As a matter of fact, its mostly them that I still keep in touch with.
I would never work or live anywhere again where people are segregated.

And to any blacks out there reading this, please stop calling each other the N word - whites don't like hearing it either and it's not helping anyone by using it.
