I think in another year or two Madonna will be eligible for induction in the RnR Hall of Fame. What do you think her prospects are?

great, now we're going to have 100 posts of one of two options.
1. "Madonna sucks. I grew up in the 60's and 70's when "real" music was popular and Madonna is definately no Beatles or James Taylor. And I refuse to accept the fact Madonna has accomplished anything decent in the world of music because I hated her so much in 1985, even though 90% of critics who hated her circa Like A Virgin championed her during Ray Of Light, I still stick to my guns that she sucks"
or
2. "Madonna's a flash in the pan. She's been out for 20 years but seriously, in the next 6 months, everyone will forget she exists"

I was thinking about putting in an disclaimer for one particular poster, but hopefully everyone can refrain from their typical negative comments and simply focus on the question from the Hall of Fame angle.
I'll think she'll make it, first ballot.
For some reason, i don't think she'll make it on the first ballot.
I think it will take her a while to be inducted.

I DON'T THINK SO!!!
Madonna is the greatest musical charlatan to ever pollute the ariwaves. I've heard most of her eighites and nineties singles and I've had the misfortune of hearing her first three albums (my sister liked her - note tense - and we had to share the living stereo at the time). Her "music" is such godawful snythesized dance noise. She isn't rock at all. True, neither is James Taylor, and he's in the R&RHoF. James Taylor shouldn't really be in there either, though - and I like James Taylor!
It really disgusts me that Madonna - who's eligible in 2009 - might very well get in on the first try while Family - whose seven albums are among the most essential in all of rock and roll - have been eligible since 1993 and still can't get in because they didn't have any hits in America although they were very popular in Britain.
Oh, wait - it's a rock hall of fame, not a hall of artistic recognition. Well, if Madge gets in, you might as well take Paul McCarntey's advice and rename it the Popular Music Hall of Fame.
John Strausbaugh wrote in the New York Press that it's become a pop hall of fame already. "When her time comes," he wrote, "Britney will be inducted. Billy Joel was."
Madge, Britney and BJ in the Hall of Fame - that makes me want to :barf:

I totally agree, but the fact is that the people who make these choices hold U2 in much higher regard then Madonna. Everytime U2 releases an album, the critics claim it to be a masterpiece. If Bono released an album of him singing in the shower, they would call that a masterpiece.

I agree. I don't think U2 are THAT bad, but everyone acts like they are this amazing band, and I don't see it. They have moments of brilliance, but for the most part, their albums as wholes cannot keep my interest. U2 and R.E.M. vie for the top spot of my opinion of the most overrated acts of the past 20 years.

I know you hate, hate, hate Madonna... but honestly, do you really think that Family is that well-known here? If an act like The Who or something had been snubbed for years on end and yet Madonna got in, your disgust would be more understandable, but when I first heard about "Family", I thought it was a reference to the obscure Prince protege group from 1985. Madonna and Family are in completely different zeitgeists of notoriety in the US.

I think Billy is definately more worthy than Rod IMO.

What a great idea - recognizing an act on the basis of popularity, rather than musical achievement! That's nothing new for Jann Wenner and his toadies at the R&RHoF foundation, of course. But why on earth would you want to judge a musician's worth by sales figures?
Madonna acts like she deserves to be taken seriously becasue of her popularity. She sounds more and more like the aging high-school football cheerleader who gets upset when no one notices her. Oh yeah, she [I]is[/I[ an againg high-school football cheerleader. . . and like most such women, she clearly never stopped thinking of men as either studs or nerds.
As for Billy Joel. . . . He claims to be a rock and roller, but his music is mostly light pop. he has much more in common with Neil Diamond than with Neil Young. He may like rock, but he can't play it; his few genuine rock songs succeed more by accident than by design. He should have stuck to the MOR, it's what he does best and he even struggled at times with that.

Here's something I hate about Madonna: her supporters believe that anyone who hears her music and deems it unowrthy of praise is an idiot. Rock critic Dave Marsh, who defends Madonna ad infinitum, has actaully insisted that, because she's a woman, with tastes in music and, back in the eighties, boyfriends that run toward black and Latino, white guys like me who hate her must hate her because we're racist and misogynistic! Why can't we just hate the music because it sucks? Because, says Marsh, no one can deny how good her music is.
Oh, yeah?
HER "MUSIC" SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!

YOU'VE ONLY HEARD THE LIKE A VIRGIN ALBUM!!!!!!!! Do I have to say for the 50,000th time that many music critics who lambasted Madonna and thought that Cyndi Lauper was the "really talented one who will last a lot longer" have changed their tune with Madonna as Madonna has changed her sound?
So you think Material Girl is the worst piece of garbage you ever heard? Madonna agrees with you... she bashes her early music as much as anybody does. She's even gone on record for saying "I would've never sung Material Girl or Like A Virgin if I knew these songs would never die". Judging her 1989-2005 work because you hated what music you heard of her in 1986 isn't really a fair comparison. Who is still making the same music they did in 1986?

Not true. I support Madonna but I wouldn't at all think of you as an idiot because you deem it unworthy of praise.
Though I might for other reasons. :p
Seriously though, it seems as if you in particular put more passion in your dislike of Madonna than your like of The Family or anyone else you're into. Why even expend that much energy in something you obviously don't care for?
Concerning Madonna, I think most writers and critics are in her corner in terms of recognizing what she's accomplished in her career. Even if it's just seen as someone who has a lot of dnce/pop hits to some, she's still managed to be an influential force in pop culture. That may not be "rock" in terms of the style of music, but how she's shaped her own career is definitely "rock" in spirit.

well, why do you always have to thread-crap whenever a thread about Madonna pops up? There's countless threads about The Beatles, Clay Aikan, Kelly Clarkson, and others and none of them have to deal with someone who feels so much better after they take a dump on the thread.
This is going to be really really hard for you to believe or accept it. But for a many number of people in their 20's and 30's.... Madonna is our superstar the way The Beatles are yours and Elvis is to some others. She's the icon we've grown up with, matured with, watch go from a somewhat cheesy pop singer to superstar to icon. You might hate her all you want, but there are a LOT of people who Madonna is to us what The Beatles are to your generation.
I know a lot of people will disagree, but I know a lot of people from around 23 to about 37 who feel that way about Madonna.

I think Rod can be decent when he has a good song (but that's so rare for him anymore). He had potential and people respected him in the 70's, but then he started jumping on whatever bandwagon could keep him "hot", be it disco, new wave, MTV's Unplugged, techno or standards (what? where's the hip hop album?) and that he does it without even trying to bring something new to the mix.
There was a really brief period from Out Of Order to Vagabond Heart where Rod was actually making good music again (Downtown Train was an excellent song IMO), and then he realized he was respected again and blew it.

lol, I don't think Virgin is a bad album, I just feel that it is very unrepresentational for her career. 9 out of 10 times I find a Madonna-basher, they cite that record when they say why they hate her so badly. I like a lot of the album except for Shoo-Be-Doo and Love Don't Live Here Anymore, but I also think that it is probably the most Britney-ish album of her catalog too.
lol. I couldn't think of anybody else that get a lot of threads here. Clay and Kelly are definately no John, Paul, George and Ringo (or Yoko for that matter), lol

On the subject of the group Family,Family is a group from England whose music is like Buffalo Springfield,Poco and The Eagles. They had several albums and hits in England, while in the United States they only had one album and one single that made the charts, although in the past few years in the U.S. they have finally re-released their albums on CD from the 60's and 70's.

it seems like GD has redeemed themselves in the underground. The people who attacked them for selling out in the early 90's now seem to realize that Green Day weren't so bad after all, when you consider people like Good Charlotte, Simple Plan and Avril who have REALLY made a mockery and thrown the word "punk" around. At least GD, unlike those acts (Good Charlotte are producing music for HILLARY DUFF!!!! for crying out loud) haven't forgotten their roots.

The whole thing of a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is boring anyway. Music should be ALIVE and continue to inspire. Rock and roll is not about being a museum of relics.

Black Sabbath

Peter GabrielBlack Sabbath have been asked repeatedly, but they have refused to be inducted. They said it was because they're more than a little miffed that music critics never gave them any respect back in their heyday, so they just feel the rock and roll establishment is just being patronizing with them. They say they are more of a "people's band", not a band that kisses up to critics and the music elite, which is what they consider the Hall of Fame to be.
It would be great if Rush were, but their music is probably too "different" for the Hall of Fame, and they are another band that critics hated. To me, Black Sabbath and Rush were my biggest musical influences growing up, both were totally into playing for fans and didn't feel the need to legitimize themselves.

I read that he was unsure how to present himself there, so that was one reason why he cut it off. It was more to make himself "presentable", which is so UN-rock and roll. ohno:
But yeah, the guy turned 50 this year, so he probably has been going bald. I always thought he was younger, but he just does because he's in his schoolboy outfit.
I Think I'm Going Bald
by Rush
from Caress of Steel, 1975
I looked in the mirror today
My eyes just didn't seem so bright
I've lost a few more hairs
I think I'm going bald
I think I'm going bald
Seems like only yesterday
We would sit and talk of dreams all night
Dreams of youth
And simple truths
Now we're so involved
So involved with life
Walk down vanity fair
Memory lane everywhere
Wall Street shuffles there
Dressed in flowing hair
Once we loved the flowers
Now we ask the price of the land
Once we would take water
But now it must be wine
Now we've been
And now we've seen
What price peace of mind
Take a piece of my mind
My life is slipping away
I'm aging every day
But even when I'm grey
I'll still be grey my way

Actually, Family played everything - jazz, blues, country-rock, heavy metal, progressive rock, and R&B. As for American country rock, what's so bad about Buffalo Springfield, Poco and the Eagles? Many of their songs have lasted very well, and the Eagles - another critically hated band - lasted longer than the critics thought they would. And they still won't give them any credit! They love Madonna for being narcisisstic, having a businesslike toward music and longevity, and being malicious toward the opposite sex ("A man can tell a thousand lies"), yet they bashed the Eagles for the exact same things! What the :censored: is up with that?
