I've Got a Secret is still on? Or are those reruns?
You know, Oxygen is a really good channel. It has a fair amount of sitcoms and seems to treat them all equally. I hope that they might get one or two dramas (something like "Sisters" and "Thirtysomething") and air them too...

i hope they or any network picks up 227, Kate and Allie and Punky Brewster.

It's weird how they are splitting up the Roseanne hour. Wouldn't it be more logical to air 2 episodes of Grace followed by 2 episodes of Roseanne? Instead of 1 Roseanne before the Grace hour and 1 after.

Kate and Allie was already been on Oxygen! But I'd would like to see My Sister Sam.

I don't like it either and it would make more sense.

What's with Oxygen splitting up the Roseanne block anyway? Is it because Grace Under Fire is a poor man's Roseanne?

Oxygen is a really good channel. All 4 sitcoms it has the rights to are great series, and "The Ellen Degeneres Show" is the best daytime talk show since Regis was on his own.

Do you mean Five (Ellen, Grace Under Fire, A Different World, Roseanne, And Living Single) Or Do you Not Like One Of them?
"Grace Under Fire" has really grown on me. I've been watching it the past few days and it is SUCH a Ro rip-off, but it is still pretty good, IMO.

How is it a Roseanne rip-off? Theres no husband, shes a recovering alcholic, its set in an entierly different location and has a totally different sensability. Plus its much better than Roseanne.

you had me up till the last sentence. Grace was funny, but Roseanne was the best sitcom of the 90's besides Seinfeld IMO.

Grace Under Fire is a complete rip-off of Roseanne. Doesn't make it a bad show, but it certainly isn't as good.
GUF, to me, is soooooo much like the early years of Ro. Let's see, both shows take place in "redneck" locales, both lead characters are strong and independant, but with Grace, you can see that she's a somewhat combination of Roseanne and Jackie. She's single, always going on dates, yet she works in a factory and has grown kids. In a way, Grace's friend Nadine is just like Jackie too, but instead, she's married...to someone who is similar to Dan Conner...
And other small things, like the transitioning between scenes (showing various stills of the exteriors of houses and buildings etc), just remind me a lot of Ro.
I'm not saying that GUF is bad, because it's far from it, and I'm not saying that it isn't as good as Ro (even though I personally think it isn't), because I've been watching the last few days and it really a good show.
Dean Winchester
07-13-2005, 02:12 PM
very true, I don't think GUF is bad at all. But it was obvious that when Carsey/Werner started Grace in 1993, they were wanting to recreate the early years of Roseanne because by then, Roseanne had taken full creative control of her show and had taken it into a completely new direction. GUF circa 93 and Roseanne circa 93 were nothing alike, but if you watch GUF circa '93 and Roseanne circa '88, you'll see the comparison.
I think Grace was funny, but I think it ended too soon and we never really got to see the show take off into the greatness that Roseanne became considering Brett never really took control of the series the way Roseanne did hers.
At least now it makes sense that FOL isn't a Roseanne fan because I remember once arguing with him when he said that Roseanne at it's peak wasn't comparable to Friends or Seinfeld in their peaks, and it was in fact a #1 show.

Grace ended up with almost all of Roseanne's producers by the end of its run too. Hell, Brett Butler even admitted to admiring Roseanne during the creation of her show and if anyone has ever catched Roseanne's E! True Hollywood Story, there's a segement in which Brett talks about Roseanne.

FOL must've been playing in traffic when Roseanne, Seinfeld, and Friends peaked. Because at it's peak, Roseanne attracted a higher rating than either Seinfeld or Friends.
Roseanne at its peak had a rating of 23.1
Seinfeld at its peak had a rating of 20.8
and Friends at its peak had a rating of 18.7

yep, people forget Roseanne was the first show to come along and actually knock Cosby off his throne, and it stayed a top 4 series for six years, four of which were top two, two of which were tied for #1 (which is as many years as Seinfeld was #1, and was more than Friends). If Roseanne wasn't "a big hit", what the hell was? Ratings only dropped once Tom Arnold left the picture and writing suffered drastically because of it.

Don't quote me unless you know what i meant. all i meant in that argument is that Roseanne never reached, imho, the same creative peaks that Friends or Seinfield did. and if i was wrong about ratings, then i'm sorry i made a friggan mistake.

You're in denial! This has nothing to do with anyone liking any show. The fact of the matter is, you claimed the show was never popular or a major ratings hit. Bitch, bitch, bitch is all you ever seem to do in every other post. You seem to think all your opinions are documented fact...... you need to get over your friggin self.

Roseanne didn't reach the same creative peaks? Okay, Seinfeld was in a level of it's own, it was so creative and original. But Friends? Roseanne was definately better in it's best seasons (seasons 3-6 roughly) than Friends was in it's peak IMO, and I like both shows. Seinfeld and Roseanne are two sitcoms that never really get old, you can watch the episodes over and over again and continue to enjoy them. I ended up selling my Friends DVD's because after revisiting the episodes once, I never felt any real kick to watch them again.
How do you not like Roseanne honestly? Before Ellen came along, Roseanne was the gayest show on television and I know so many gay men who adore the show, it's up there with The Golden Girls as a "gay classic". I just find it kinda odd that you like Grace and Reba yet hate Roseanne, when Roseanne kinda laid the blueprint for both shows (even Reba McEntire credits Roseanne as inspiration for her sitcom).

YES, i hate Roseanne. i'm sorry but i just don't. Roseanne had gay characters, but was not a show about being gay. Ellen, Will and Grace, Queer As Folk, Six Feet Under and The L Word all captured that a million times better, imho.
can we please just agree to disagree. we are allowed to disagree. i hate roseanne, you like it great...
