Ever tried to trace your family tree? I've been doing it on and off and finding bits of info. I found out my great-grandfather was a minister and worked in the mines. For those who have tried how far did you get.

I don't have the ambition to trace my family tree, but I'd love to read about it if someone else did it. I love to look at very old pictures of my grandparents from the turn of the last century.

Some guy from New Zealand with the exact same name as my father contacted him back in the mid-seventies as he was putting together a family geneology. Once it was complete he sent my father a copy, but I don't know what happened to it. I didn't care when I was younger, but the older you get the more interesting it is to you.

I know my maternal grandmother had theirs traced once and she was bragging to everyone that there was French nobility in the family during the French Revolution. When they came up with some horse thief in England a little further back she had them stop right there! It was a big embarrassment to her! Big deal! Its not as though they found a link to Charles Manson or anything! :lol:

Someone did the one on my mom's side...and screwed it up royally. My aunt was my grandmother's sister or something instead of her daughter and my other aunt was either a boy or didn't exist. :lol: I could have done a better job just guessing.

My dad was really into family history. We are "Volga Deutsche"(German's born in Russia). Our family originally came from The Black Forest area of Germany but emigrated to Russia at the invitation of Catherine The Great to farm Russian lands. The German's were eventrually shipped to Siberia after the Bolshevik Revolution. But my grandparents got out of there in time!The Russians wanted my grandpa to join the Russian Army but he left for America just before all the German's living there(at Russia's invitation) were shipped off to Siberia. It was a very tragic time for those people. But unfortunately very little is ever mentioned in history about it. Mother's were torn away from their chiildren, husbands from wives, shipped off in boxcars............to live in that God forsaken place! :(

My brother has been researching our family tree for a few years now and so far has been able to trace back 4 generations. My fiance can trace his tree on his fathers side back to the 1300's

Yeah, a couple of years ago The History Channel(or was it PBS?) had a documentary about The German's from Russia.

My dad belonged to The American Society Of German's From Russia.They have monthly meetings and a newsletter. That is how and when he did his extensive research on his family tree. They are a fount of information. I, myself,find it very interesting! :D

My dad's family was in the same situation (though I have never heard of anything really tragic happening to them), and my dad's cousin has been trying for years to trace them farther back than Russia, but has had NO luck!

My husband's much older half-sister is married to a Mormon, and is therefore working hard on tracing every branch of both their families. This is because--as I understand it--it is part of their belief system that they should be baptized for deceased family members who might not have been during their own lives.

I've been doing genealogy research for several years. I've actually located several cousins who were also doing research and we ended up having a huge cousin's reunion in which about 300 people showed up.

I've gone back severl generations. I've traced my fathers family back to like the 1600's if I remember correctly. As for my mom's side, everyody always gets stuck on mygreat-great grandfather. Nobody can find a record of where he is from. Some papers show England, others show the Carolina's.

I do have several ancestors that fought in the Civil War as well as the American Revolution. In fact, The Battle of King's Crossing during the American Revolution was fought on my family land.

As for the Civil War, I actually found a receipt from the Confederate States of America written out to my great-great grandfather for some saddles he made and sold to them.
