It wasn't confirmed, but the am news channel WPTF out of Raliegh NC was doing a news broadcast on WQDR an fm country station out of Raleigh. This is a trusted news source, but like I said it was not confirmed.

Okay, I emailed the station and got an answer:

Both FOX News and CNN reported the story once. It was then dropped. We
reported once that FOX News and CNN were reporting that Abdul had been
fired. WPTF dropped the story after we could not confirm it. Neither
FOX nor
CNN ever reported how the false information got into their news stream
and
was reported. Since American Idol is a FOX program, it is particularly
interesting that they were the first to report the bogus story.
