View Full Version : Artist Highs & Lows game
ABlairican Pie
04-07-2005, 11:41 PM
Here is a neat little twist on the Which Do You Prefer? game. I name an artist, band, performer, it can even be a musical scene or album, etc., and mention which is considered a HIGH point of their career (or what I think is personally a high point), followed by what is generally considered a LOW point (or what I consider a low point). I then throw out a name, you give a high point/low point of that band/performer, etc., then give another name for someone to respond to. This should get interesting!
Okay, example:
U2
High: War album - Low: Pop album
next example:
Guns N' Roses

Black Sabbath without either Ozzy or Dio
ABlairican Pie
05-19-2005, 12:25 AM
Being the resident expert on Black Sabbath, that's an interesting one. Hmmm.
One is tempted to say Ian Gillan, formerly of Deep Purple (who did in fact later rejoin Deep Purple in 1984), but the album with him was a disappointment, which is why he left Sabbath.
So...
High:
Critics generally regard albums such as 1987's Eternal Idol and 1989's Headless Cross as some of their best of the Ozzy-less/Dio-less vocalists. Those two albums actually included vocalist Tony Martin, who lasted almost as long as Ozzy, off and on. Vocalists Glenn Hughes and the late Ray Gillen (no relation to Ian Gillan) were also very good singers, but many Black Sabbath fans felt as it were "still not Sabbath" because of the ever-changing lineups.
Low:
Two to pick from:
Forbidden, from 1995, one of the "invisible" albums that their record company did very little to promote. The album was pretty much standard hard rock/metal on the level of Technical Ecstasy from 1976. Nothng so memorable, but I did happen to see them on that tour which was still very good in spite of the fact that Tony Iommi was the only original member still in the band (but his playing was excellent at that show in Tacoma).
The other, the vocalist of questionable tenure, Jeff Fenholt, who has made a name for himself in Christian circles by claiming he was singer for Black Sabbath in the mid-80's, which the band has disputed (even though he may have been one for 15 minutes). It's interesting that for such an "evil" band he claims to have fronted, the sheer noteriety of it has been a constant cash cow for him.
Let's see....
Oh yeah, while on the topic:

Okay, highs:
Phenomenal cutting edge albums such as Country Life, For Your Pleasure, Stranded, Siren, Flesh and Blood, and Avalon which put a clever twist in pop music and prog-rock with their electronic experimentation and diverse musicianship; the hotties which graced their album covers including Jerry Hall on Siren; pretty much all their albums are excellent. They also helped usher in the New Romantics movement of the early 80's. Songs such as "Love Is the Drug", "Out of the Blue", "Editions of You", "Over You", and "More Than This" are some of their best.
Lows:
The fact that their hot album cover for Country Life with the buxom, VERY scantily-clad women was banned and altered; Brian Eno left the band early;

Highs:
Night Songs album: "Shake Me", "Somebody Save Me", "Nobody's Fool", etc. One of the greatest bands of the 80's who actually ROCKED. :rocked: Long Cold Winter and Heartbreak Station were also great albums.
Lows:
The fact that they were reduced to a three-piece at a time when their music was seen as mere "hair-metal". Record industry execs said they would consider re-signing them if they would only go grunge and cut their hair. BLASPHEMY!!! Fortunately they've been doing reunion dates with other 80's bands.

The Sunday's: They are a British band that formed in 1989 by Harriet Wheeler and David Gavurin. They have 3 albums Reading, Writing and Arithmatic, Blind, and their last album in 1997 was Static and Silence. They have been compared to 10,000 Maniacs, Cocteau Twins and Lush. I would also compare them to Mazzy Starr. They have a great cover of the Rolling Stones "Wild Horses." Other songs include "Summertime" "Here's Where the Story Ends" and "Cry". :D
