Selena's star shines 10 years after death

SANTA ANA, Calif. -- By 23, Selena was already the queen of Tejano music in her home state of Texas, filling the Houston Astrodome with 60,000 fans. With her catchy songs of love, she was well on her way to becoming an international pop phenomenon.

The singer's seemingly unstoppable rise ended, suddenly and tragically, 10 years ago today. She was gunned down by Yolanda Saldivar, the former president of her fan club, whom she'd caught embezzling money from her. Saldivar was convicted of the slaying and is serving a life prison term.

The shot Saldivar fired from a .38-caliber revolver silenced one of Latin music's most promising young voices, but it did nothing to dim the legend of Selena. A decade later, she's arguably bigger and more significant than ever. Selena's family and fans, record labels and radio stations keep her alive through music and merchandising.

To commemorate the anniversary of her slaying, at least half a dozen CDs and DVDs have come out in recent weeks or are about to be released. Her family will be at an April 7 concert at Houston's Reliant Stadium to mark the 10th anniversary. Several performers, including Kumbia Kings, the band led by Selena's brother, A.B. Quintanilla; Gloria Estefan; and Thalia, are scheduled to participate in the three-hour tribute to be broadcast live by Univision, a Spanish-language television network.

"There are bittersweet emotions," said Abraham Quintanilla, Selena's father. "I would rather she be present with us, but we know that we can't change that, so I'm also happy to see the response from all the artists who said yes to the concert immediately. It's a good feeling to know that they cared for Selena and they still do."

The youngest of three children, Selena Quintanilla was born in Lake Jackson, Texas. She began singing at age 6 and started performing with Selena y Los Dinos, the family band, when she was 9. At 15, Selena won the Tejano Music Award for female entertainer of the year.

By 23, Selena was the reigning queen of Tejano music, a fusion of polkas, country and western and traditional Mexican folk music sung in Spanish that is popular along the Texas-Mexico border. Selena and Los Dinos mixed in Colombian "cumbia," pop and R&B, creating a unique sound that won fans across the United States and Latin America and earned them a Grammy for best Mexican-American album in 1993.

On stage, Selena created a sexy image with her long, black hair and deep-red lips, her dance moves, her skintight pants and rhinestone-covered bustiers. Off-stage, however, her unpretentious personality and her devotion to family struck a chord with fans.

Despite her success, she continued to live in Molina, a working-class neighborhood where her family moved when she was a young girl. Her father managed the band; her brother, sister and husband played in it.

Today, with Latin music far more prevalent in the mainstream, Selena is seen as a pioneer who blazed the trail for icons such as Jennifer Lopez (who got her big break playing Selena in a film), Jennifer Pena and teen sensation JD Natasha.

There was a time, at the height of her success, when many major retail stores still didn't carry Selena's music. Her tragic death, and the outpouring of grief that followed, finally got the mainstream to take notice.

Thousands of Selena fans across the country mourned. Record stores sold out of her music and ordered more. Magazines such as People and Entertainment Weekly put Selena on their covers.

"She influenced the Latino world," music producer Emilio Estefan said. "It's such a shame that her life was interrupted. Wherever she is, she should feel happy and blessed that so many people love her."

God, has it been ten years already. What that girl could have done had she lived. :(

I'll play my Selena CD today to honor her.

I was hoping there would be a thread about her today, I'm listening to her right now, my favorite is "No Debes Jugar" even though I have no clue what she's singing about LOL

RIP Selena

I remember hearing about that, it was huge news. Then they made that crappy movie about her which I had to watch in Spanish class

I liked the movie - if nothing more than for her music that's played throughout it!

I like that song too.

I really can't believe it's been ten years. I wore my Selena shirt to school in her honor. I actually cried this year. I've never cried on the anniversary but this year was different. It hit me in a different way. It was kind of strange. Selena and her music mean a lot to me though. She's been such an inspiration to me for the eight years that I've been a fan of hers. I'm just glad that she left behind a legacy that hasn't been forgotten and that she still makes people feel good even after her death.

We miss you, Sel.

Online is the only place I can talk about Selena without getting any flack, I get so much of it because of the fact that I'm not a Latina and don't know any Spanish other than a few words.

I used to get a lot of flack too. But that stopped when everyone in school had to take a language. Most people started taking Spanish and guess what movie every Spanish class was forced to watch? Yep, Selena. So many people have respect for her now. People came up to me today and asked to look at my shirt and they all told me how they couldn't believe that it had been ten years. Everyone in my Spanish class wants me to tape the reunion concert so we can watch it. I'm so glad that people know who she is and they realize that she was a great role model. However, I have some teachers that tell me what a horrible role model she is because she died at a young age and stuff. I just ignore them.

What? that doesn't even make sense, it's not like she died at her own hands like suicide or drugs, she was murdered!

I know. Some people are just that ridiculous. I've had teachers that are like, "How can you look up to her? She died at such a young age. Is that what you want to accomplish?" I flipped out. I couldn't even believe that these people were saying this. And I went into this whole thing about what a wonderful person she was and they challenged everything I said. These are people that obviously had only seen the movie and knew nothing more of Selena. Selena was so much more than that movie depicted.

I think Selena will always be a legend to us. She was truly a role model
for young girls. Girls, You have believe in yourselves in no matter what
you do.Don't let anyone put you down in anything. Selena dominated
an type of music which is more popular in the male category. They used
to say Tejano music was about men. I now set goals in my life because
of Selena. There is alot more to people who have talent.

Selena always cared for her family and friends and never made a big
deal out of her fame and what she was.

Consentida,
I just thought of Rodney Daingerfield always used to say.

'' I get no respect!'' Well that seems true to all celebrities, Selena accomplished alot more that people realized.Alot of them said
that she was just no good slut wanna-be just like Madonna,
I said Selena was no slut!. It was ten years ago. We read the newspaper
in one of my classes. And our teacher read this line to us that said.

Selena wanted the followings for Hispanics.

Get An Education
Learn About AIDS And STDS
Love Your Family
Show Respect To Culture
Believe In Yourself.

Our teacher then broke down in tears,And said that is what all of you
need to do in life and not think about ways to make the most money
for all of the above are your greatest wealth and riches.

What!?! How can someone be a poor role model if they die at a young age? I don't think those teachers know what they're talking about. Would those teachers say the same thing about Dominique Dunne or Rebecca Schaeffer if those teachers were teaching a drama or film class? Or in the music area, I guess in those teacher's eyes, Aaliyah, Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper aren't good role models either by dying in plane crashes. I can't believe that teacher's attitude.

It is really sad that Selena passed on at such a young age. I have a lot of her albums and she influenced me to learn Spanish. I can't believe it's already been 10 years. It's such a tragedy. :(

why did you feel the need to bash another artist in favor of Selena? Believe it or not, Madonna is an icon to a lot of us the way that Selena is an icon to the Hispanic community.

How would you like it if someone on a Madonna thread gave her flack for recording a few of her songs in Spanish "trying to cater to that Selena audience"? it'd piss you off... so think the same way when you start bashing another artist who is considered as much of an icon, if not more (most English speaking people outside of Texas had no idea who Selena was when she died), than Selena is.

Bashing J. Lo or someone is another thing alltogether.

Yeah, some teachers at my school are absolutely ridiculous when it comes to things like that. I'd like to know who their role models were growing up...

But yeah, Selena helped me make the decision to learn Spanish as well. I mean, my family speaks Spanish and everything, but i was never taught how to speak it. So, when I started listening to Selena, it really made me want to learn. I used to translate every one of her songs and just like...study it. I always say that Selena was my first Spanish teacher. I've really excelled in Spanish in school and stuff and I'm going to college to be a Spanish teacher. And it all started with Selena..

I love these songs. "I Could Fall in Love", "Dreaming of You" and that silly song "Bidi-Bidi-Bom-Bom" (or "Bidi-Bidi-Bum-Bum") to be exact same thing which was very silly at the time Selena sang. Kinda like Twiggy from "Buck Rogers" TV show in which a robot used to say "Bidi-Bidi-Bidi-Bidi-Beep". I have two albums on CD. One is "Deaming of You" and the "Selena" soundtrack. I always loved the movie with J-Lo played Selena. The ending of the movie was so sad.:( RIP - Selena (10 years later).
