SAND LAKE, Mich. (AP) - A boy drove his mother's car to a video store in the middle of the night, police said - and he's all of 4 years old.

Even though he was unable to reach the accelerator, the boy managed to put the car in gear and the idling engine provided enough power to take him slowly to the store, a quarter-mile from his home, about 1:30 a.m. Friday, Police Chief Doug Heugel said. Finding the store closed, the youngster began a slow trip home.

Weaving and with its headlights off, the car got the attention of police Sgt. Jay Osga, who initially thought he was following a driverless car that had taken off after being left running at a gas pump.

The car turned into the boy's apartment complex and struck two parked cars, then backed up and struck Osga's police car.

LOL I heard that earlier. Sounds like some completely unrealistic thing out of a movie.

Well hell, you have to get your cartoon fix somewhere! Nick jr doesn't show cartoons at 1:30 in the morning. He probably just needed a Rugrats fix. ;)

If all the doors would be locked then no kid could get out and do this and/or wander out in the night. I've heard so many stories about young kids wandering outside during the night; some during the wintertime too and these situations shouldn't be happening.

who says the door wasn't locked? if he's smart enough to drive a car to the store and back, i'm sure he can unlock a door.

Why am I thinking that it's fake?I'm thinking it's fake too. Unless that car is an old relic that kid would have had to press on the brake before it would come out of gear.

It's possible.

I first saw Vicki Lawrence perform live in May 2003. The venue she performed at was on the top of this hill, surrounded by a large lake. On the other side of that hill was a gas station. A few days after I'd seen her perform live, an accident occurred at the gas station there. This mom stopped at the gas station for something, and she left her two small boys, both under three years old, in the car. She put her car in park, but didn't take the keys out of the engine nor turn it off. The three-year-old boy got into the driver's seat, managed to get the car out of park and he drove the car straight into the lake. The car and the boys were stranded underwater for at least 45 minutes- the littlest of the two died, and the three-year-old boy suffered brain damage. It made the front page of the newspaper and everything at that time. It can happen. I'm not saying I don't believe it, but from experience, I wouldn't be surprised if it were indeed true.

That's hilarious! If I was out driving and saw a 4 year old kid driving a car I'd be cracking up.

But in all seriousness, I'm glad the boy's OK, but that mom still should've been watching him!

That's pretty stupid of her. Well I guess it could happen then I just find it kind of odd that boy happened to drive to the video store.

That kid is really lucky he wasn't hurt or kidnapped. But you gotta admit, that's a pretty funny story.
