The Golf GTI was first introduced in Europe in the mid-seventies, with a top speed of 140 mph. It came here in the early egihties as the Rabbit GTI. Here's a pic of the European version - note right-hand drive! :D

The original Golf was named the Rabbit in North America to give it a cute, cuddly image. (The Golf name is short for Golf-Strom, the German word for Gulf Stream.) Here is a 1980 model with its proud owner.

The Rabbit GTI was introduced as a 1983 model and was available for only two years before the all-new second-generation GTI was introduced. Here is a classic 1984 Rabbit GTI.

Volkswagens were designed by Nazis.
Dr. Porsche designed them, and he wasn't a Nazi. The Nazis only built a couple hundred of VW's - it was the British who got the company going after the war!
Here's a V-Dub the Nazis certainly didn't design:

The first-generation Golf, called the Rabbit in North America, was discontinued in 1984. For the 1985 model year, Volkswagen of America debuted the second-generation Golf - introduced in Europe a year earlier - with the Golf name. VW wanted to standardize model names globally.
The new Golf was bigger than its predecessor, but got better fuel economy because of its smoother shape. Pictured above is the European version of the five-door model. :)

If Golf isn't your game, how about Polo?
http://www.motormagazinesha.co.jp/medialog/hotmenu/whatsnew/2002_06/020607/rear.jpg
This the current-generation Volkswagen Polo - a little smaller than the Golf, and a very zippy, peppy car. This is a Japanese 2002 model.
The United States and Canada are just about the only countries on the planet where Volkswagen doesn't sell this car. If you're a North American VW nut, and you want to buy a Polo, visit Volkswagen of America's Web site (http://www.vw.com) and drop them a line expressing your interest in seeing the Polo come here. :)
Steve M.
01-25-2005, 11:45 AM
The original Polo was more angular in design - much like the old Rabbit/Golf 1 - and it even featured a variant (what the Europeans call a station wagon) version. This British version is a 1983 model.

Never heard of the VW Student? That's because was it was never for sale. It was one of Volkswagen's many concept cars.
http://www.ltv-vwc.org.uk/W_Spin/WS_feb_2003/84student_vw_01.jpg
The Student, shown at European auto shows in 1984, was a VW design exercise to create a microcar to sell in places like Amsterdam and Luxembourg City, where streets are about as narrow as an office building corridor. Meant to be smaller than the Polo, it nonetheless rode on Polo mechanicals and was powered by a Polo 1.1-liter engine. Though never produced, the Student was an important step in VW's microcar project. :)
Steve M.

And here is the original, first-generation, Volkswagen Polo hatchback. It only made it to America in the form of Matchbox and Corgi toys, so this shape may look familiar to some of you.

The VW Polo has been the company's entry-level car in Europe for over a quarter century. Though the Golf is a perennial bestseller in the Old Country, the Polo has many diehard fans as well. :)

What a wonderful Thing! This is a 1973 model.
http://www.avonhill.com/thumbnails/sport_utility/1973_VW_Thing1.jpeg
The Thing, based on General Erwin Rommel's Kubelwagen jeep, was the first Volkswagen built in Mexico to be sold in the United States. A popular off-road utility vehicle south of the border, the Beetle-based Thing developed a cult following among Americans. Public demand inspired Volkswagen of America to import Mexican-built Things from VW's Puebla plant. Actor James Garner, who drove a Thing in a Dam 500 race, was one of its fans.
Unfortunately, its removable doors, its rough road manners, and its lack of safety features caused Volkswagen of America to stop selling it after two model years (1973 and 1974). The Thing is still loved by folks who admire its lack of pretentiousness, especially when compared to modern SUV's from the Ford Explorer to the Hummer H2 to VW's own Touraeg.
Steve M.
01-25-2005, 08:07 PM
Volkswagen later came up with a good idea to produce a car with the Thing's capabilities in an economical Golf package. The result was the Golf Country. Pictured below is a 1990 model.
http://www.jumy.de/suv/vw/vw-golf-country-90.jpg
The Golf Country, with its small size, its four-wheel-drive chassis, and its obviously high ground clearance, allowed its owners to have their cake and eat it too - it had all the attributes of an SUV in a simple economy hatchback sedan. It was the sensible choice for off-road aficiandos. I regret to say that the Golf Country has never been sold here.

01-26-2005, 10:27 PM
We love Herbie!
And now, a Volkswagen we haven't covered yet. :)
Realizing that they lacked a small notchback sedan, Volkswagen decided that the best way to create one was to simply slap a trunk on its existing Golf/Rabbit hatchback. Voila! The Jetta was formed. Pictured below is a second-generation model.
http://www.autocountry.ru/volkswagen/jetta/image/1.jpg
While the Jetta (called by different names elsewhere) has sold respectfully on five other continents, here in North America it's VW's best seller. Americans and Canadians simply prefer cars with trunks over hatchbacks, and they also like affordable German cars. VW has never skimped on the Jetta's capabilties, though, and a sporty GLI version is also available. The 2006 Jetta goes on sale later this spring. :)

It's not the Microbus - it's more like a Pontiac Montana, in fact - but it's a potent, capable wagon with seating for seven passengers and good cargo room. It's the Volkswagen Sharan.
http://www.nonstoptravel.net/Cars/VW%20Sharan.jpg
I once saw a Sharan while cycling along Park Avenue in Manhattan. Which was astonishong, because VW, inexplicably, doesn't sell it here in the States or in Canada! And the Sharan I saw had New York license plates and everything. The fact that an American would go to extremes to buy one of these babies proves what a darn good wagon it is. Hopefully, VW of America will come to its senses and add this car to its lineup. :)

Inexplicably, the Type 3 Notchback was never officially sold here; VW of America didn't think it would sell. That didn't stop some Americans from importing a few through the "gray market," which is probably how that blue Sharan I saw in Manhattan got here.VWoA still needed a family car to supplement the Beetles, and it finally brought over the Type 3 Fastback, a picture of which I already posted.
But you're right; the Jetta isn't the first car to be created from an existing Volkswagen. In fact, there was a new Beetle model created from the existing Beetle. . .

The Super Beetle! :D
http://www.oldbug.com/73sup1.jpg
As a family car, the Type 3 was the Passat of its day, but the Type 113 - a.k.a. the Super Beetle - was the Jetta of its time. Bigger than the standard Beetle, the Super Beetle offered more interior room and cargo room. But while it still offered an aircooled engine, it replaced front torsion bar suspension with MacPherson struts to allow for more trunk space. The room gained was at the cost of the Bug's unique handling, and purists - don't you hate purists? - wouldn't go near the 113.
Pictured above is a 1973 model. Note the convex windshield. Super Beetles from 1971 and 1972 - I had a `72 - had flat windshields in the VW tradition, but all Super Beetles from 1973 on had wraparound windshields, giving them an unorthodox, un-Volkswagen look - and a dashboard sill!

Here's one of the most famous Volkswagens ever.
http://andylangager.net/abbyplate.jpg
This VW Beetle appeared on the cover of the Beatles's Abbey Road album; it belonged to a fellow who lived across the street from Abbey Road Studios. A bunch of maniacs, however, suggested that is was a "clue" pertaining to the idea that Paul McCartney was dead. The VW's license plate allegedly spelled out his age - 28 IF Paul had lived.
Actually, Paul McCartney was 27 IF still alive. The "I" is in fact a "1" - number ones on British license plates have no serifs on them - and the letter "F" indicates that that car was registered in 1968. A close look at the Volkswagen - the bumpers, the absence of louvers on the hood - will show that it is indeed a '68 Bug.
Its mere presence on a Beatles album cover, death rumors or not, made it perhaps the most valuable VW in history. It sold for $2300 at auction in 1986; it's currently on display at a museum in Germany. :D

The Volkswagen Derby was basically a Polo with a trunk, but it sure was cute.
http://www.henkslagter.nl/foto/VW%20derby.jpg
The cat in the lower-right-hand corner of this picture seems to agree!
Like the Polo, the Derby never reached the North American market, but a Brazilian variation of it - the Fox - did. :)
Steve M.
02-01-2005, 02:27 PM
The Volkswagen Fox is not to be confused with the Audi Fox of the seventies. VW's model was the same thing as the Brazilian Voyage (pronounced voy-AJ) model.
http://www.munks.com/classifieds/87WhiteFox/87WhiteFox002.JPG
This 1987 model, kept company by a Volkswagen camper, was one of the first Foxes sold in in this country. VW inrtoduced it as an entry-level car below the Golf. It came as a two-door sedan, a four-door sedan, and a three-door wagon. Though it sparked some interest, the lack of an optional automatic transmission kept sales low. The Fox lasted in VW's U.S./Canada lineup through 1993. :)

You would think it would be worth more than that. I mean, a 1970 Plymouth Hemicuda recently sold for $250,000 (and I don't think it was on an album cover). Of course, the Hemicudas are much more sought out and desired. Still, I would have guessed at least $10,000 for a famous VW. I wonder why the price was so low? Probably needed a complete restoration.

Oh, drat - I forgot, 2300 was the figure in British pounds! :stooges: Still, when you convert 2300 pounds into U.S. dollars by the exchange rates of the time, it comes to $3700 - and that's still a ridiculously low figure. I think you're right - that VW was in need of restoration! An auction on another Beatles car, the Apple Corps Bentley, was a complete dud because the Beatles had done so much damage to the interior, it was hardly worth anything! John Lennon's psychedelic Rolls-Royce was the real Fab Four automotive prize. :)

http://www.americandreamcars.com/1981rabbit.jpg
In May of that year, General Motors introduced its J-cars (the Chevrolet Cavalier and the Pontiac Sunbird) as 1982 models, and Volkswagen ran ads welcoming GM's competition. VW had every reason to be confident; after all, the first Cavalier/Sunbird models lacked 5-speed manual transmissions, optional diesel engines, and even fuel injection, all of which could be found on a 1981 Rabbit. :)
Long live the bunny! :D

VW's latest multipassenger vehicle (MPV) is similar to the Mazda 5, the Pontiac Vibe, or the Vibe's Toyota twin, the Matrix. It would make a great addition to VW's North American lineup. By the time the third-generation Jetta was introduced in the 1993 model year, the Jetta model was VW's bestseller in North America. Despite VW's attempt to standardize model names globally, the Vento nameplate replaced the Jetta name in Europe.

The Quantum was replaced in North America in 1990 by the Passat. Passat is what the Dasher and the Quantum had been called in Europe all along. In the 1990 model year, that name came to the New World. It's short for Passatwind, German for "trade wind." (Volkswagen likes to name cars for winds and currents to reflect the "international character" of their cars.)

The fourth-generation Jetta - with styling vaguely reminiscent of the Beetle ;) - has been available since the 1999 model year. (In Europe it was renamed the Bora.) The Jetta has been a big seller in North America, and it will be replaced soon by an-all new fifth-generation model.

When Volkswagen introduced its Type 3 Fastback in the fall of 1965, it was complemented by a station wagon - the Type 3 Squareback!
http://www.rutlandmotorcars.com/images/autos/standard/68vw3.jpg
Not knowing what this particular model was officially called when I was little, I always called it a "Beetle wagon!" Curiously, VW marketed it as a sedan.
Steve M.
02-11-2005, 09:12 PM
A much less successful car from Volkswagen was the Type 4. In fact, the 4 series was an absolute sales disaster in the United States. Sold as the 411 and the 412 here, the VW Type 4's were available in fastback, notchback, and wagon form, but the notchback was not available in the U.S.
http://www.resi.at/kaeferaner/Images/Alte%20Kaefer/images/vw411.jpg
So what made the Type 4 Volkswagen's Edsel, at least in North American eyes? Mainly, it was due to it being overweight and underpowered, plus a tendency to use too much oil.
The Type 4 featured VW's first four-door sedan (pictured above, in European form), and its styling was more prosaic than previous VW sedans and squareback wagons. It was, in fact, the company's last attempt at a viable aircooled rear-engine design. By the mid-seventies, Volkswagen would move away from that configuration.

A 1975 concept car, the original Chico was Volkswagen's first attempt at designing an urban commuter car. More exercises at building a microcar for the masses would follow. :)

the LUPO!!
http://www.autobischof.ch/images-2004/vw-lupo-2004-800x467.jpg
The Volkswagen Lupo is VW's smallest model. Two sizes smaller than the Golf, it has a 1-liter engine with only three cylinders; it's the most economical Volkswagen you can buy. Oh, that's right - if you're from North America, you can't buy it! VW doesn't sell the Lupo here, mainly for safety reasons (conforming to U.S. Safety standards would make the Lupo too expensive and underpowered for its size). That sucks!

The sixties had the original VW Microbus, the seventies had the second-generation, single-windshield Bus, and the eighties got the VW Vanagon! THis is a 1985 model.
http://www.avonhill.com/thumbnails/van/1985_VW_Vanagon.jpeg
The Vanagon - its name is an obvious cross of "van" and "wagon" - was more angularly styled than the previous Transporters but actually more aerodynamic. Despite its sharp looks and quirky engineering (it still had a rear-mounted aircooled engine), the Vanagon never really caught on, and it was almost completely forgotten when Chrysler introduced its first minivans in 1984. :( The Vanagon lasted through 1992.

In 1990, Volkswagen introduced its new 2+2 sports coupe, the Corrado.
http://www.dubdesignindustries.com/images/corradothumb.jpg
Replacing the Scirocco, the Corrado was supercharged with a G-shaped charging device that made it go faster than any previous Volkswagen except the GTI.
There were only two problems - the Corrado seemed redundant next to the GTI, and with its more practical, versatile styling, the GTI seemed the better bargain. :( (The whole appeal of the GTI was that it was a practical hatchback with sports-car performance.) The Corrado was destined to have a short lifespan, but it does have its fans.

The Vanagon was retired after the 1992 model. Finally, VW's Transporter went for front engines and front-wheel-drive. Vanagons had both watercooled and aricooled engines, but the new van would have watercooled engines only. The look and feel, though, were unmistakbly Volkswagen. :)
Here in the U.S. the new van was sold as the Euro Van.
http://199.239.248.45/images/stk/1999/vw99ev.jpg
First available for the 1993 model year, it was omitted from the VW lineup in the States for awhile due to slow sales and difficulty meeting U.S. government standards. Once it joined the U.S. lineup permanently, though, it became a cult favorite like its predecessors. This is a 1999 model.

Her'e the replacement for the Lupo. . .the Fox! :D
http://www.volks.org/nyheter/2003/september/vw_fox.jpg
This car has nothing to do with the Fox that was sold here in the late eighties and early nineties; this is a totally new car! :)
And will we get it in North America? Not right away, but. . . gas is going up to $3 a gallon, so the higher it goes, the better our chances of seeing this car here!

I'd rather have a 1970 Plymouth Hemicuda, which could get to 60 mph (5.5 seconds) about 6 times faster than an underpowered '70 VW, which means I certainly wouldn't fall asleep in it.
(BTW, 652 hardtops and 14 convertible hemicudas built.)

Before there was the Passat, there was the Dasher.
(Actually, "Dasher" was what Volkswagen called the original Passat in the States, because "Passat" - short for, as noted, Passatwind, German for "trade wind" - sounded way to foreign here then.)
http://www.carguyart.com/catalog/Brochures/big/1976%20Volkswagen%20Dasher.JPG
The Dasher was Volkswagen's topline family car in their North American lineup in the 1970's. It was the spiritual successor to the mid-engined Type 3 sedans of yore. Pictured above is a brochure for a 1976 five-door hatchback Dasher. :)

The original Volkswagen Passat was VW's first front-wheel drive, water-cooled vehicle and a sign that VW had to respond to the more modern competition from Detroit and Japanese imports in North America and rivals like Fiat and Peugeot in Europe.
http://www.volkspage.net/artigos/vwxaudi/Image48.jpg
Marketed as the Dasher in the United States and Canada, the first-generation Passat was introduced in North America as a 1974 model. The Passat was Vw's family car and replaced the Type 3 and 4 models. The Golf (Rabbit in North America, Caribe in Latin America) would be the volume car destined to replace the Beetle.

Let's make friends with our fasts! :D
Here are pictures of the five generations of the Rabbit/Golf GTI over the years.
http://www.automobile-sportive.com/guide/volkswagen/golfgti/golfgti1800.jpg
(The original European Golf GTI, inrtoduced in 1976. A practical, economical hatchback that was fast on the autobahn and handled like an expensive sports car - wow, what a concept!)
http://www.neartowntech.com/kittman/oldvws/gti/images/gti2.jpg
(The North American version of the original car, the Rabbit GTI. Introduced in the fall of 1982, it revived interest in VW in the New World, albeit temporarily. A cut above the "Malibuized" Pennsylvania-bulit Rabbits of the time, "Super Bunny," as it was called, became a favorite among car enthusiasts. This is a 1984 model.)
http://www.bentleypublishers.com/images//features/vg92/vw.golf.gti.16-valve.a2.main.jpg
(The second-generation GTI, above, was introduced in 1983 in Europe, a year later as an '85 model here. All Mark 2 Golfs were bigger and moore aerodynamic than the original car. The North American edition of the GTI won Motor Trend's 1985 Car of the Year Award.)
http://vw.dpgoldman.com/images/A3GTI.jpg
(The third-generation model, pictured above, was crisper than the Mark 2, yet softer than the Mark 1. But with a VR6 engine, it was more powerful than both.)
http://www.canadiandriver.com/news/03images/03vwgti_20.jpg
(The fourth-generation model, with its 180-hp turbo engine and its stiff suspension, showed that VW hadn't lost its ability to put a mean machine in an unconspicuous package. Many GTI purists, though, were turned off by this GTI, finding it too cumbersome and too bloated. But many people still bought 'em. This is a 2003 twentieth-anniversary edition model.)
http://www.thecarfanatics.com/shows/frankfurt/images/vw_golfgti_01.jpg
(And here it is, the all-new fifth generation model! Road testers have deemed it the best GTI since the original. Did someone say the best GTI ever????)
Now, if you'll excuse me, my fast doesn't like to waste time on the Internet.
