For the 500th post on this thread, here's one I found on "Strange Vehicles.com"

Yeah, looks nice like that. I've been hunting for a photo of one used in the 1988 movie "Hot Pursuit."

It was the Rabbit in North America, the Caribe in Latin America, and the Golf everywhere else. But no matter what it was called, it saved Volkswagen from bankruptcy in the seventies and began a new era for the company.

Here's a 1984 Rabbit. Made in Pennsylvania after VW's home factory in Wolfsburg was already producing the Mark 2 Golf, 1984 was in fact the last year for the Rabbit/Mark 1 Golf in North America. It's still made in South Africa and sold there as the CitiGolf.

That last one in post #498... I've noticed that the Europeans call some cars "limousines" which are really just 4-door sedans. I've always considered a limousine to have some kind of partition between the front and rear compartments. Just an observation.

Lol. A "high-performance" car running a 17.9 sec. 1/4 mile? That's about 3 seconds (or about 15 car lengths) slower than a typical real high-performance car!
Sorry, I couldn't resist. :D

A lot of people in America actually resisted the Volkswagen below. The Type 4 was VW chariman Heinz Nordhoff's last-ditch effort to keep the aircooled rear-engine VW lineup going.
Originally placed on sale in Europe, the Type 4 was sold as the 411 in the U.S. and Canada in 1971 and 1972 and as the 412 in 1973 and 1974. It still is considered VW's greatest sales disaster in North America, even with the Phaeton.
The Type 4's defenders call it underrated, especially given its creature comforts (a pre-timed heater) and its design. Type 4 detractors call it underpowered, given its 1.7-liter four-cylinder engine delivering only 85 horsepower.
When Nordhoff died in 1968 and his successor, Kurt Lotz, put Volkswagen on a program to develop front-engine watercooled cars, the Type 4's days were numbered. 1974 was the last year of production.
Below is a 1973 VW 412.

Here's a 1977 ad for the Beetle and the Rabbit. 1977 was the last year the Bug was sold in the United States, and the bunny was excpeted to carry the torch from then on.

Those cars were hit with an ugly stick, Steve.....however, i remember when the 411 came out, i was pretty amazed to see a 4-door VW with quad headlights! (I liked it WAY better as a kid! ) I'd also have to say that the 411 was better looking than its successor ( the 412, shown here ) VVV

We swear my uncle was the first to ever "supe" up a van. In 1966 he bought a VW mini-bus and built a bed in the back that had storage drawers underneath it. He travelled Germany for the summer in it with his girlfriend. They were like middle-aged hippies back then.
Of course once the 70's came along everybody started putting "beds" or couches with tables in the back of vans. My uncle Sam was about 10 years ahead of his time. ;)

We got it used in 2000, and it's held up pretty well. I HAVE had problems lately with the locks and the alarm. Thankfully my brother works at a VW dealer and we seem to have gotten it worked out. The power steering hasn't been working great lately, either. I don't have to drive too far to get to work, church, etc. I don't do much freeway driving, either, so I hope that helps!

VW never should have let the Mexican plant build the cars for NA.....their reputation has been badly tarnished by it!
Steve M.
12-12-2007, 07:40 PM
My 2000 Golf is a Wolfsburg model, but that too has had a couple of defects.
As for the Mexican cars, it could have been worse. The ones they tried to send here in the early nineties were so bad that Volkswagen of America president Bill Young refused to take them because had he tried dumping them into North American VW showrooms, word would have spread about their horrible quality, VW loyalists would have stopped buying, and Volkswagen would have gone down the drain in the United States.
The 1993 Mark III Golf and Jetta models were due here for September 1992 as '93 models. They arrived in May 1993, and only then mostly in San Diego. The '94 models made it to all dealerships in the United States and Canada.

P.S. VW sent the car I bought - complete with an automatic transmission - to a dealership in New Jersey to reward them for selling so many cars. :)

Speaking of the Mark III Golf and Jetta . . .
I took this picture of a Mark III regular three-door Golf this past spring. Since most Mark III three-door Golfs were sold only as GTIs, this was quite a find.

Yeah, but I don't know how much it would be worth since it's rusted in places and the interior is frayed, plus it tends to take in water when it rains/snows. My dad's taken good care of it for 23 years, but there's only so much one can do.

By Canadian Auto Press
Volkswagen Auto Group, as a multi-national corporation, produces vehicles of all sorts, many of which we're unlikely to ever see here in North America. From various commercial vehicles to tiny city cars to its high-end products, like the Touareg R50 and Phaeton, VW has a varied product portfolio.
The automaker's Brazilian arm has just added to that roster with something that's destined to raise eyebrows.
Without the large, VW bus-sized Volkswagen logo that fills its tall, five-slot grille you'd never know that the 9.150 ECE was a Volkswagen.
The VW's interior lacks frills. This angular, primer-gray, heavily armoured vehicle was designed for riot police and military use, not what most would associate with Volkswagen. Inside, it's a pretty stark place, although it does have special ventilation filters, and there are mounts for industry specific gear.
Powering the 9.150 ECE is a four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that's a whopping 4 ¾ litres in displacement. It doesn't sound like much, but it generates an impressive 405 lb.-ft. of torque and 150 horsepower, which should be more than enough to move the van, which features bulletproofed body panels and glass.
If you're the driver, you'll need to know how to operate a clutch and a stick shift, as the 9.150 ECE only comes with a five-speed manual.
If you're ever in Brazil and happen to see one of these, it's best to move out of the way - its occupants are probably focused on keeping the peace.

But now he's gone (forever) and I will miss him :(

Because he was old. And whenever something had to be fixed, the Costs were really high. So it was planned to buy something new this Year anyway.
And couple of Days ago, he died ... while I was on Tour with him.

Sorry for your loss. I know sometimes it can be hard saying goodbye to a good vehicle that you've had for a long time. My first car was a GMC Jimmy and I loved that little truck but it had transmission problems so after 10 years I had to let it go. :( I still miss it sometimes.
