Eddie Franklin is a 27 year old bachelor who loves being a "player", but everything changes when he meets his new neighbors across the hall: Krystle and Lily. Krystle is a 27 year old advertizing executive who has a 10 year old daughter. Krystle is a single parent to Lily (and Krystle is twice as much of a good parent to Lily as both of Krystle's parents were to her). Eddie is a struggling musician by the way. Eddie and Krystle instantly have crushes on each other. Eddie's older sister, Erica lives in the same apartment building as Eddie and Krystle. Erica is a wedding planner, who badly wants to settle down with a good man soon, and start a family. Eddie and Erica's single mom, Kate lives in her Chicago home. Krystle's parents are divorced, and live in Chicago as well. Krystle's dad, Tony remains single and loving the life of a bachelor again. Krystle's mom, Lori married another man (Tim) 6 months after getting the divorce finalized. Lori and Tony get at each other's throats whenever they see each other, Lori hates the fact that Tim and Tony get along so well despite the fact that Tim married Tony's ex. With all the love-hate tension between Tony and Lori, they release their tension by having an affair with each other (without Tim or anyone knowing). Krystle disapproves of her parents' affair together after their divorce, yet she wishes she could have her parents become married together again--yet she doesn't want to jeopardize Lori and Tim's marriage even more. Tony, Lori, Tim, and Kate drop by their apartments quite often and quite unexpected at times. As the season goes on, you see how Tony and Lori become closer and closer and how Tim and Lori become more distant.
In the pilot episode, Krystle and Eddie go out for drinks one night (as Erica watchs Lily). Krystle and Eddie end up being wasted and spend the night at Eddie's apartment, resulting in a night of drunken sex. The following morning, Krystle feels different and soon learns she is pregnant with Eddie's kid after their drunken yet romantically fun night together. Krystle informs Eddie (and Erica). Soon enough, word gets around to Lily, Lori, Tim, Tony, and Kate.
