Synopisis: Melissa Brock lives in Los Angeles and been enjoying life as the towns most respected and wealthiest divorced society heiress and she is shocked when her accountant and lawyers are endited on charges of Insider trading, which leaves her and her nine-year old daughter Penniless and forces her to make the decision to move back to Lousianna with her elderly parents who are always on the verge of killing each other, but know deep down that they love each other dearly. Once in Lousianna Melissa is shocked once again when she finds herself falling for her high school sweetheart, Gary, who is still single and as attractive as ever.
Episode 1- "A Whole New Beggining Part 1".
Plot- Melissa Fields-Brock was a sucessful, and highly respected Los Angeles Sociallite, having been divorced from Tom Brock who is "The Donald Trump of California" for the last eight years, she was happy, just raising her daughter and living off Tom's billions of dollars, UNTIL she discovered that her accountants and lawyers had been fouind guilty of insider trading, leaving her, penniless and the laughing stock of the socialitte world. and with life in LA so exspenive she decides to do something she never thought or wanted to have to do in her life, go back home to Louisanna and live with her overbearing and slighty off-kilter parents, who are ALWAYS fighting, but deep down love each other.
Episode 2- "A Whole New Beggining Part Two".
Plot- On thier first day back in Lousianna Melissa and Samantha have trouble adjusting to farm life, Samantha destests having to get up at five o'clock in the morning because of the roosters and she can't fathom having to do chores around the house... "Chores? huh, whats that?" says Samantha. "I HAVE TO CLEAN MY ROOM?" "Why doesn't the maid do it" asks Samantha? " "Oh, Sammy, We don't have a maid, down here in lousianna we don't have maids, we do our own chores, it builds character." explains Grandma Sally. "What do i get" asks Samantha blunty, "Well you get the feeling of achievement and self-confidant" says Grandma, this doesn't go over well. Meanwhile, Melissa is having trouble finding a job, "For some reason, they just don't seem to have a need for Sociallites in Lousianna?" So she is forced to against her better judgement take a job at of all places, A local fast-food resturant! "I never thought my baby would be flinging burgers, for a living." says Charles.
Episode 3-"Love Is In The Air"
Plot- On her first day at the burger palace Melissa is stunned to learn that the owner of the burger palace is none other than her high school sweetheart and one-time fianncee Gary Richards. Meanwhile, Samantha is not fitting in at school, the girls think she's weird and the boys just think she's ugly, and she can't figure out how to win them over. "In L.A. i would just buy them something, but now we have no money, what am i supposed to do?" asks Samantha to her grandma... "Try being yourself, show them your smile, your laugh and your personality" says Sally. So Samantha decides to have a sleepover and invite all the "cool" girls at school. Not knowing much about whats cool in Louisanna, Samantha just plans a night with her favorite movies and cd's and as it turns out giggles galore occurs and best friends are made. Samantha learns a valuable lesson about being yourself at all costs.
Episode 3-"Fast Food"
Plot- Without his consent Sally enters Charlie in a Pumpkin Pie bake-off, and must find a way to tell him that he has won and must fly to new york and compete in the finals. Melissa still embarressed to be working at a fast food resturaunt tries to hide from Gary, causing a racuous and almost getting fired. Thankfully Gary is understanding and gives her another chance. Samantha is disgusted at what they call school lunch in Lousianna and with the support of the coolest kids in school persaudes the school board to introduce a new, healtiher menu consisting of a salad bar, taco bar and low-carb pizza and getting rid of soda, replacing it with water, milk (low-carb) and juices. This causes her to become the newest member of the schools most powerful click "The Horse Raddishes" a name she instantly changes to the much cooler 'The High Rulers".
Episode 4- "Old New Friends"
Plot- When Gary and the manager are called away for a Burger Palace confrence they ask Melissa, the only employee with any sort of management expierance to run the store, but Helen whose worked thier for fifteen years is jealous and sets out to sabatoge Melissas every move. Melissa is able to catch on and saves the day, proving to herself that she is good for something and this impresses gary so much he makes her the new assistant manager. Helen is fired. Sally gets a part-time job at a flower shop and instantly befriends the owner, Marie., who admits to her that she is a lesbian. Sally has never met a lesbian and freaks out at first, even thinking about quiting the job, but qickly realizes that it doesn't matter if Marie is a lesbian and makes a new best friend. (Swoosie Kurtz guest stars as Marie)
Episode 5- "Ups and Downs"
Plot- Gary and Melissa start to remember why the loved each other in the first place and things heat up when they go on a date and get locked out of the car in the middle of a desertted road. Samantha must cope with peer pressure at school when her position as the newest member of the "High Rulers" is put to the test when Rhona, the leader of the group pressuers her to make fun of Carly, a classmate who is in a wheelchair. Samantha doesn't want to do it because "Carlys been really nice to me", but she values her social status more and decides to do what shes told to do "I just got here, i have to do what the kids here do and if that means making fun of Carly, oh well".
Episode 6- "Love, Loss and Suffering" (Special 1-hour episode)
Plot- Life throws a wrench into the Feild-Brock house when Charles suffers a heart-attack and may die. Melissa must come to terms with the past and apologize for all the years that she's ignored her parents. Samantha must deal with the possibilty of losing her grandfather who she has just gotten to know, and this makes her cry, something she hasn't done since her dad left all those years ago. Sally must face the realization that she is getting older and could very well lose Charlie for ever. Faced with this realization, Sally turns to Melissa and the bible for comfort, praying that Charlie makes it. This brings up unresolved issues for Melissa who remembers why she left Louisanna in the first place, her religious and political differences with her mother, a conseritiave-catholic republican who dissapproved of her getting pregnant with Samantha when she was single. This issue is brought up when Sally tries to force Melissa and Samantha to pray to god, a god that they do not believe in. "For goodness sake, your dads in the hospital and is about to die, and you can't even find it in your heart to kneel down and pray for him? why not?" "Because god wasn't there for me, or samantha when Richard left us, or when our money was stolen or when you disowned us for selfish political reasons, thats why". A verbal arguement ensues and Melissa decides it might be best to move out of the house for good. Sally is hurt, realizing in one day she may have lost both her husband and her daughter and grandchild.
Episode 8-"Tears and Sorrow"
Plot- Charlie passes away and his loss sends everyone into shock and depression. Melissa turns to Gary for support, unloading years of pent up frustration and now, saddness on him. They share an intimate kiss and Gary asks her to move in with him, Melissa in a moment of passion agrees to do this. But after seeing the pain on Sally's face after loosing Charlie she realizes that they can work out their differences and decides to stay put. Samantha turns to her new friends for comfort, but they are too busy prepairing for the harvest patch dance to care, and Samantha is surprised when its Carly of all people that lends her the support she needs, even though she's been nothing but mean to Carly. After a long talk, Samantha asks Carly if she wants to be friends and Carly says yes.
Episode 9- "Life Lessons"
Samantha faces ridicule from the other "High Rulers" when they see her spending more time with Carly. Samantha must decide who too choose, the girls that were not supportive of her or Carly whose been nothing but nice. Samantha gains the strength to pick Carly and loose her place in the group. While cleaning out Charlie's office, Melissa discovers a box contaning some passionate letters addressed to a women name "Constance", she assumes it was his mistress and is afraid to tell Sally. Meanwhile Sally unaware of Melissa's discovery is frantically searching for something as well, she is very upest when she can't find them. When Melissa finanlly tells Sally about the letters, she is shocked to find out that Sally is "Constance" and that those letters were a secret way that Charlie and Sally expressed love to each other to keep thier marriage fresh. "Constance" is a nickname they had for Sally. Melissa sees a side of her mother she's never seen before.
Episode 10- "TLC"
When Gary is bed-ridden with an infection, Melissa attempts to take care of him, like a wife would do, but when his temper is short, so is Melissa's bedside manner which causes a rift between them. That is until she too gets the infection and they are quarentined. Old secrets and wishes are revealed. With Melissa out of the house and Samantha at an extended school feild trip, Sally is alone in the house for the first time and realizes how lonely she is. She decides to take on more hours at the store and is surprised at how nice Marie is too her. They become close friends, and after a few weeks, Sally starts having feelings that she thinks might actually be a gay attraction towards Marie. But Marie knows well enough to know that its just sally being lonely and mouring her husband. Sally realizes this too and apologizes to Marie for causing her to feel uncomfortable.
Episode 11- "The Proposal" (Season Finale)
After spending so much time together Gary and Melissa are know fully aware that they are in love with each other, and he decides to take it to the next step and proposes to her. When she says no he is very hurt and wonders if he should stay with her, and risk loosing her again. Melissa is convinced that she must stay single for awhile in order to find her true self and doesn't want to bring another man into Samantha's life if they aren't sure its going to work out. Sally still lonely without Charlie takes to spending too much time with Samantha, in what she calls "Bonding Time", Samantha loves her grandmother but doesn't want to spend every waking moment baking oatmeal cookies and talking about Charlie and tries to let her grandmother down gently. It doesn't go over well for Sally who has nothing to do and feels unwanted and unimportant without Charlie around.
