"A Step Ahead..Or Behind"
ABC Sitcom
This sitcom is about three middle-aged sisters-played by Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Aniston, and Kelly Ripa. Sarah Jessica Parker plays Katie, the eldest sister, who is happily married and is a mother of two young kids. Jennifer Aniston plays Lilly, the middle sister, who recently got married and is just starting her new life as a wife. Kelly Ripa plays Gracie, the youngest sister, who is ever-so-enjoying her single, carefree lifestyle. Katie, Lilly, and Gracie each love their lives, yet secretly wish to live their sisters' lives at times. Katie's workaholic husband, Rick Spencer (Dan Cortese) and Katie have two kids: Morgan, 7, and Aaron, 5. Lilly's new husband (of three months), Eric Price (Matthew Perry) and Lilly have no kids and just moved into their new home as a married couple. The Prices' home is a block away from the Spencers' home. And then there's Gracie, who was recently evicted from her apartment building, and is forced to move in with her sister and brother-in-law, Lilly and Eric's house. Lilly and Eric's lifestyle conflicts with Gracie's lifestyle. Katie, Lilly, and Gracie make it a part of their everyday routine to have lunch together every single day of the week at the favorite coffee shop- Jane's Java-the owner, Jane Harper (Candice Bergen) is like a surrogate mother to the sisters when in need of advice. Katie is a stay-at-home mom, Rick is an attorney, Lilly is a preschool teacher, Eric is an advertizing executive, and Gracie is a gossip columnist for a magazine. The sisters' parents--Hank and Paula Monroe, played by Tom Selleck and Bette Midler.

Ep1: Pilot Episode:
As Rick leaves for a week-long business trip to China, Katie is left alone as the kids start their first week of school. Katie begs Lilly, Eric, and Gracie to help her out with the kids with Rick gone. Morgan fakes sick in order to not face a mean girl at school.
Ep2: China Baby:
Katie fears she may be pregnant again, and is unsure of what to do with Rick being in China. Lilly accompanies her to the doctor's office-where Katie and Lilly learn Katie is indeed pregnant. Meanwhile, Gracie asks Jane and Eric-separately- for advice for her next column in the magazine.
Ep3: Romantic Getaway:
Eric and Lilly go away on a romantic weekend away from Gracie, who is getting on their nerves big time. Gracie babysits for Katie and Rick, as Katie takes Rick out to dinner to celebrate Rick coming home and to break the news of her pregnancy.
Ep4: Sympathy Pains Or Something:
Lilly thinks she just sympathy pains for a pregnant Katie.. but in reality, Lilly is really showing signs of being pregnant herself. Katie takes Lilly to get tested for being pregnant-all tests come back positive. Lilly tells Eric that she is pregnant too. Eric freaks and starts working overtime, what is not what Lilly had in mind. Katie and Lilly go out to celebrate their new pregnancies by looking at the latest baby clothes.
Ep5: Gracie Is Left Alone:
Gracie feels left out with both her sisters being pregnant at the same time. Gracie debates if she should go out and find a boyfriend and get pregnant to be like her sisters. Lilly and Katie soon realize Gracie's dilemma and tries their best to include her, after Gracie breaks down and confesses her jealousy. Eric runs to Rick for some fatherly advice.
Ep6: Telling Ma And Pops:
Katie and Lilly tell their parents, Hank and Paula about them being pregnant at the same time. Paula is happy for the both of them, but Hank feels Lilly is in over her head and is not ready to have a kid. Gracie decides to ask her boss for a raise, and ends up getting fired. Gracie runs to Jane for some advice, before telling her sisters, brothers-in-law, and visiting parents.
Ep7: Happy Birthday Morgie:
It's Morgan's 7th Birthday. Katie and Rick throw Morgan a party. Morgan tells Katie to 'shut up' in front of everyone at the party. Katie is embarrassed and upset, as she runs off up to her bedroom. Rick pulls Morgan aside and scolds Morgan. Lilly, Eric, and Gracie realize their nephew Aaron is gone missing during the party, and instead of worrying Rick and Katie, they take matters in their own hands and decide to find him (before the party ends). Morgan eventually apologizes to Katie, who shares a heart-to-heart with her daughter.
Ep8: Meet Mr. Right/Wrong:
Gracie claims to have found the "Mr. Right" in her life. Gracie and her new much younger boyfriend, Tim (Ashton Kutcher) go out to eat with Eric, Lilly, Katie, and Rick. Everyone, but Gracie, finds Tim very immature and definitely not right for Gracie. Gracie, at first, is upset and runs off with Tim at the restuarant. Yet, hours later, Gracie returns and tells them they were right (Tim left Gracie for his now-single ex-girlfriend). Katie and Lilly console a heart-broken Gracie.
Ep9: No Alcohol In Da House:
As Katie and Lilly get rid of temptation, they get rid of any and all alchol in their homes. Leaving their hubbies and Gracie unhappy. Gracie, Rick, and Eric go out to the bars and have way too much, they come home to angry Katie and Lilly, who sets them straight. Katie try to hide Rick's very obvious drunkeness from Morgan and Aaron-who have awaken by Rick's loud talking.
Ep10: New Employee:
Gracie gets hired at Jane's Java as Jane's assistant and co-waitress. Lilly and Katie go out of their way to see their little sister in action in a blue-collar job for once, with cameras in hand. Eric's newly-divorced mom, Hillary (Marlo Thomas) visits with news of her new boob job. Everyone is in favor of Hillary's new boob job, but Eric is not amused and is truly unhappy with "his new mom".
Ep11: Christmas Troubles:
Katie and Rick get into a fight, when they are both invited to spend Christmas with Katie's parents in Boston and spend Christmas with Rick's parents in Chicago. Eric and Lilly exchange gifts for each other-Eric gets Lilly a diamond ring to celebrate their 6 month marriage, as Lilly gets Eric a pair of silky blue boxers as a gag gift. The newlyweds also experience a fight during the holidays. Gracie enjoys the single life of Christmas, as she decides she is flying to Boston to spend Christmas with her parents as her sisters stay at home.
Ep12: Jane's Ex Returns:
Jane's ex-husband, Roger (Ed O'Neill) returns with news of him wanting Jane back after their 4 year divorce. Jane doesn't want to get back with Roger, but is willing to have a strictly-platonic friendship with Roger. Meanwhile, Katie and Lilly (both 4 months pregnant) learn their babies' due dates. [Katie's due date-May 24th; Lilly's due date-June 2nd]
Ep13: Blizzards In Minnesota:
Katie, Lilly, and Gracie are stranded diner during a big blizzard. The three sisters can't get through to their hubbies, but spend the time waiting until they can leave the diner by reminicising about the past (Past Proms, Katie's Wedding Day, Lilly's Wedding Day).
Ep14: Our Favorite Cousin:
The sisters' favorite cousin, Leighanne (Kimberly Williams-Paiseley) pays a visit. Leighanne drops the news that she is engaged to Gracie's former high school boyfriend, Craig (Kirk Cameron). Gracie becomes jealous and very hostile towards Leighanne during her visit. Katie and Lilly force Gracie to "grow up and move on". Gracie and Leighanne share a kind heart-to-heart chat, before Leighanne leaves. Eric and Rick has a poker night with each of their buddies, yet one of Eric's liberal friends and one of Rick's conversative friends cause a little uncomfortable tension--causing Eric and Rick to not invite both sets of friends for the same event every again.
Ep15: Morgan vs. Hannah:
Morgan and her former best friend Hannah get into a big fight during a sleepover. The two bickering, yelling, and screaming girls gets on Rick's, Katie's, Aaron's, and each other's nerves. Rick and Katie try to handle the situation the best they can. Gracie, Jane, and Lilly go to a BINGO night at the local elementary school. Jane wins the pot, yet has to share it with another greedy attendee-an 87 year old widow.
Ep16: Viva Las Vegas: Part One
With Hank and Paula staying with Morgan and Aaron for a week, as Katie, Rick, Lilly, Eric, Gracie, and Jane head to Vegas for a week of vacation. Eric and Rick hit the strip joints, as Jane and Gracie hit the slot machines, and as Lilly and Katie hit all the gift shops. Gracie and Jane become annoyed by an elderly woman (Estelle Getty) who keeps following the two of them.
Ep17: Viva Las Vegas: Part Two
Katie and Lilly hit the buffet tables as their pregnancy cravings kick in majorly. Eric and Rick befriend an elderly man (Ed Asner)-they buy the man a lapdance from one of the strippers. The man suffers an heart attack and dies right then and there. Rick and Eric immediately feel guilty and responsible. Gracie, Jane, Katie, Lilly, Eric, and Rick head back to Minneapolis.
Ep18: Boys Or Girls:
Lilly and Eric find out they are having a baby girl, as Rick and Katie learn they are having a baby boy. The couples try to agree upon some possible baby names, which turns out to be total chaos. Gracie learns a secret from Jane's past- when Jane was 46, she found herself pregnant and alone, and that Jane had an abortion (due to her age mostly). Jane promises Gracie never to repeat that to anyone.
Ep19: Hormones Or Her Moans:
As Lilly's sexual drive increases almost too much for Eric to handle, Katie's hormones race confusing Rick on how to act around her. Gracie and Jane hire another waitress-Meghan (Megan Fox), a young gorgeous woman at age 18.
Ep20: Call To London:
Rick is called to London on short notice for a business deal that can last a week at least. Rick heads to London, as Gracie decides to move in with Katie-to help Katie with the kids and with Katie being 8 months pregnant.
Ep21: Too Soon : Part One (Season Finale I)
With 3 weeks before her due date, Katie's water breaks and starts going into labor. Katie is rushed to the hospital by Gracie, Lilly, and Eric. Katie tells them to call Sharon (Penny Marshall) [Rick's mom] to come stay with the kids. Katie gives birth to a healthy and beautiful baby boy, Kevin Michael Spencer , after 8 hours of labor. Moments later, Lilly's very own water breaks.
Ep22: Again Too Soon: Part Two (Season Finale II)
Lilly starts going into labor, as Eric hyperventulates and passes out. Gracie lets Katie handle Eric, as she takes his place in the delivery room as Lilly's coach. Lilly has complications during labor. Lilly calls for Eric. Gracie goes and tells him that Lilly wants him in there. Eric rushes in there to be by his wife. Lilly, with Eric by her side, gives birth to a healthy and beautiful baby girl, Shannon Renee Price , after 14 hours of labor and 3 hours of complications. Rick returns from London to see his wife and newborn son, as well as Lilly and his new niece.

Season Two Episodes
Ep23: Life With New Babies:
Eric and Lilly get spoiled as their 3 month old daughter (Shannon) sleeps al the way through the night, as Rick and Katie are challenged as their 3 month old son (Kevin) is up all night crying. Gracie is glad she doesn't have any kids yet after seeing the ups and downs of having babies.
Ep24: Homecoming And Coming Home:
As Jane and Gracie help Meghan find a homecoming dress at the mall, Paula tells them that she and Hank are separated, and that she has bought an apartment across town.
Ep25: Happy Grandmothers:
Paula (Bette Midler), Rick's mom-Sharon (Penny Marshall), and Eric's mom-Hillary (Marlo Thomas) drop by to their grandsons and graddaughters. Jane reluctantly goes out to eat with Roger (Ed O'Neill) and end up realizing how much each other really misses the other. Jane and Roger share a kiss after the date at Jane's Java.
Ep26: Pushy Bosses:
Lilly's request for another 3 months of maternity leave is denied by her boss, Carla (Phylisia Rashad). Rick is forced to attend a business trip to Toronto, Rick is truly angry about leaving Katie with the three kids now. Rick threatens to quit his job if his boss sends him on another business trip without any warning.
Ep27: Jane's Older Sister:
Jane gets a visit from her older sister, Mary (Liz Sheridan) who has news of her husband of 30 years has been killed in a car accident. Jane feels bad for Mary, who is desperate to rekindle her friendship with her sister after many years of being distant. Gracie learns Paula is looking forward to entering the dating world so soon after beign separated from Hank.
Ep28: Baby Blues:
With Eric gone at work, Lilly soon realizes baby Shannon has came down with a cold. An inexperienced Lilly freaks out and calls Katie and Paula over for some advice on how to handle Shannon's cold. Gracie takes Morgan and Aaron to the park, where Gracie finds a lot of single fathers and begs the kids to pretend to be her kids in order to get a date with one of the hunky, young, single dads.
Ep29: Say Good-Night Gracie:
Gracie almost gets hit by a car, but is recued in time by a hunky stranger-Paul (Matthew McCaughney). Paul and Gracie go out to dinner on Gracie for him saving her life. Paul soon tells Gracie he is not ready to date anyone so soon after his late wife's death 2 years ago, but that they can just mess around a little. At first, Gracie is upset, but after thinking about it, she agrees to take him up on his offer. Katie and Lilly are not pleased with Gracie's idea to foul around with a widower who just saved her life.
Ep30: Shut Up and Kiss Me:
Jane and Roger decide to elope (again) in Vegas. The sisters are shocked that Jane's remarrying Roger. Jane decides to let Katie, Gracie, Lilly, Eric, and Rick attend their wedding in Vegas. Rick and Eric are a little uncomfortable about going back to Vegas (after having gaven an elderly man a heart attack 6 months ago). Eric and Rick decide to stay back with the four kids and let their wives and Gracie attend Jane's wedding.
Ep31: Loving You:
Hank returns to town with some important that he has to share with his daughters. But before Hank can tell his news, Paula arrives and gives Hank some divorce papers. Hank briefly signs them in order to tell his news to the girls. Hank spills the news to Lilly, Katie, Gracie, Rick, Eric, and Paula (at the same time)-that he recently found out he has lung cancer and has 2 years to live.
Ep32: How Dare You:
After hearing Hank's sad news, the girls are truly upset and scared. Paula feels bad about divorcing her dying soon-to-be-ex-hubby. Paula rips out the papers, after the girls confront her about them. Eric and Rick are intrigued about their father-in-law having lung cancer.
Ep33: Brother, Oh Brother:
Rick's yuppie older brother, Jack (John Travolta) pays a visit to Rick and Katie. Jack tells them the news that he is now single after his wife of 10 years has left him for her boss. Jack and Gracie meet and are instantly attracted to each other. Rick is uncomfortable about having his yuppie brother dating his flaky sister-in-law.
Ep34: Jane's Java Going Outta Business?:
Jane tells Gracie and Meghan that they should start looking for a new job, since Jane is going to be closing Jane's Java. Jane and Roger plan to move to Florida to be near their only son. Meghan applies and gets hired at a clothing store at the mall. Gracie begs Rick to hire her as his personal assistant. At first, Rick says no, but eventually changes his mind after seeing how badly Gracie needs a job.
Ep35: Farewell Jane:
Jane (and Roger)'s going away party is thrown at Jane's Java, before Jane sells the coffee shop to another businessman. The girls will miss Jane. Jane has a heart-to-heart chat with each of the girls to give each of them a nice, loving talk with a little advice thrown in like usual.
(Last Episode as Jane (Candice Bergen) as part of main cast. Meghan (Megan Fox) is never shown after this episode.)
Ep36: Eric's Little Sister:
Eric's kid sister, Claire (Tori Spelling) stops by for a visit. Lilly and Eric realize they need to choose a godmother and godfather for Shannon. They choose Rick and Katie (who also choose Lilly and Eric to be Kevin's godparents). Claire is upsetted by this, and so is Gracie. Paula and Hank go to a doctor's appointment of Hank's, but Paula can't stop tearing up during the meeting-which gets on Hank's and the doctor's last nerves.
Ep37: Long Lost Lover:
Paula's old college flame, Pete (Dan Lauria) arrives in town to sweep Paula off her feet. Paula is stuck choosing between Hank and Pete. Lilly gets the flu and is worried that she is give it to Shannon, so she decides to go stay with Paula for the meantime. Lilly soon realizes that her mom is stuck between two men and helps her choose Hank.
Ep38: Starry Nights:
Rick and Eric take Morgan and Aaron camping, as Katie and Lilly stayed with Shannon and Kevin. Gracie goes out to eat with Hank without telling her sisters, who find out and are eager to find out what was said at the dinner.
Ep39: Kids And More Kids:
Aaron wants a party for his 6th birthday with all his friends. Rick and Katie beg Eric, Lilly, and Gracie to help them with the party and watching all 20 kids. Paula and Hank watch Shannon and Kevin for the day.
Ep40: Price Vs. Spencer:
Rick and Katie challenge Eric and Lilly to a game of Trivia Pursuit and form teams based upon spouses. In the middle of a heated agruement (about who did/did not cheat), Gracie storms in from her "last date" with Rick's brother, Jack. Gracie tells them that Jack was caught flirting with the younger waitress as Gracie sat right there next to him. Rick shows no sympathy for Gracie, as he told her already what Jack is like and she didn't listen. Katie, Eric, and Lilly convince Rick to go talk to Jack and tell him to apologize to Gracie.
Ep41: Turn For The Worst:
Hank's cancer takes a turn for the worst, and is put in the hospital. Paula, Gracie, Katie, Lilly, Rick, and Eric visit Hank (as the four kids are left with Meghan-who is not shown, just talked about). Paula and the girls fear the worst for Hank. Hank dies during his sleep during the night. The nurse shares the bad news to the family the next morning. (The next four episode are real, heart-wrenching, sad episodes. But the next season will be back to his comedic self again).
Ep42: This Can Not Happen:
Paula and the girls are devastated. Rick and Eric console their mourning wives, and Paula and Gracie console each other. Paula and the kids must work together and start planning the funeral.
Ep43: Calling Family And Friends:
Lilly, Katie, and Gracie must call friends and family to tell them about Hank's death. The girls find it extremely hard not to break down crying on the phone. Paula decides to have Hank cremated. Seeing Hank die and how everyone is affected reminds Rick of how it was when his father died 7 years ago.
Ep44: No Fun In Funerals:
Paula, Katie, Lilly, Gracie, Eric, Shannon, Rick, Morgan, Aaron, Kevin, and other friends, and other family members show up and attend Hank's funeral. Paula, Katie, Lilly, and Gracie each stand up in front and have something to say about Hank at the funeral.
