Henry Rush (Ted Knight) from the 1980-86 sitcom "Too Close for Comfort".
or
Paul Hennessey (John Ritter) from the 2002-Present (Although his run ended in 2003) sitcom "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughters".
Both were funny. In fact, I like Ted Knight as Henry Rush more than as Ted Baxter.
However, I choose Paul Hennessey.
BTW, I know there are more overprotective fathers on sitcoms. However, these two were the stars of those shows. Them being overprotective came into play alot.

I think "Too Close For Comfort" is the better show, but I prefered the character or Paul Hennessey.
As for Ted Knight as Henry Rush over Ted Baxter....

You've lost ALL credibility.

I knew I said too much. ;)
However, Ted's "Henry" character has the sort of Jackie Gleason mannerisms that I like. Plus, Henry was constantly annoyed by Monroe Ficus. It was funny to see Ted Knight explode in anger. Don't get me wrong, I like Ted Baxter.

I like Ted Knight in Too Close for Comfort. I knew he wanted to do something to shake off the Ted Baxter image and I think TCFC did that for him. I love the chemistry between him and Nancy Dussault. I like her better as his TV than Georgia Engel, who played Ted's wife Georgia on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and Nancy, as Muriel Rush, was her own woman and was able to hold her own against Ted. Whereas Georgette went along with any dumb thing Ted did.
As for over protective fathers I am surprised that Danny Tanner was not mentioned. His overprotectiveness of his daughters are just overbearing.

I thought of him only after I started this thread. I also thought of James Evans, who could be conisdered overprotective of Thelma.
List of Overprotective Sitcom Fathers:
1. Paul Hennessey (8 Simple Rules)
2. Henry Rush (Too Close for Comfort)
3. Danny Tanner (Full House)
4. James Evans (Good Times)
Feel free to add to the list.

How about Alan Matthews? At times he could be overprotective

Yeah, but he wasn't the star of the show, and overprotectiveness wasn't the basis of the series.
Whereas shows like TCFC, 8SR and FH were based around overprotective fathers.

He was overprotective in such a sweet way. I could tell that he really loved Samantha with his whole heart. At times, I do feel a bit sorry for Samantha though. Her father seems to be everywhere.

Paul Hennessey of Course. He is my all time favorite. He was so overprotective. I can't wait til 8SR is on the WB. I can't wait to see John on that show again.
