I think Mary Tyler Moore is very overrated. It's not a bad show, but too many people say its the best sitcom which I don't think is true at all. I found it boring as a child and a teen. I watched some episodes recently and to me it is nothing all that special. Dick Van Dyke's show was more entertaining. I think the reason this show is so ballyhooed is because a lot of people who work in TV relate to the characters.

Barney Miller is pretty good to me, I think it's a show that appeals to a certain type of viewer. Same thing with MASH, I'm surprised MASH is/was as popular as it is, I find it a dreary show to have to sit through, it is very depressing to me. It may be very intelligent etc but it is very depressing.

Paul Sand in Friends and Lovers. I bought a 16mm print at a flea market and watched it once... which was one more time than I laughed.

M*A*S*H was another show that had zero laughs after the second season. By the end of the '70s, it wasn't even (excuse the pun) operating under the pretense that it was a comedy anymore.

I think Barney Miller is a type of show that you either love it or you hate it; I loved the shows for years, because I was such a fan of Ron Glass (Sgt. Harris) now, that I am not that interested in him anymore, I am less fond of the show, but I do admit that I was impressed with Hal Linden's acting, I truly thought he did an excellent job playing Captain Barney Miller.

Friends and Lovers did finish at #25 in the Neilsen Ratings but that was way too low following a #1 rated show.

Barney Miller
Happy Days
Laverne & Shirley
Paul Sands in Friends and Lovers - It was #25 in ratings when the plug was pulled. Bridget Loves Bernie was #5 in the ratings when it got cancelled and it was because of religious groups was putting pressure on CBS about the show. The show had potential of being a great show.

To me the most overrated 1970s TV show was All in the Family. I watch TV to be entertained, and shows should follow the same formula as Leave It To Beaver, Family Matters, Laverne and Shirley and The Andy Griffith Show.

But not everyone is entertained by the shows you are entertained by. I like most of the shows you listed there, but I also like AITF, and I think it is very entertaining.

If they took off all of the shows that don't entertain me, everyone who works at NBC would be out of job, just about...

I'd never expect anyone to agree with me since I think "Arrested Development" is one of the most forced and laugh-free comedies on the air right now, but if anyone really cares what I think, I felt "Friends and Lovers" suffered from all the accusations that have been thrown at "Center of the Universe" this year. That it was just a bunch of familiar faces and big talents who didn't mesh particularly well. But the real part of the problem was the part of the title before "Friends and Lovers." Paul Sand just could not carry the show at all. He was upstaged by every single member of the supporting cast.

I wasn't even 3 when it aired on CBS (I didn't even live in the US), so this isn't first-hand information, but I vaguely remember reading somewhere that it was widely considered the sure-fire hit of the season. And when it failed spectacularly, some critics said that it was too just smart for the lead-in's audience.

That's funny. I never knew "All in the Family" was a dumb persons' show.

Happy Days is VERY overrated. I seen it many times and I don't think this show is very great or funny. I wonder how it managed to crack #1.

you didn't like it after season 2? I know a lot of people who don't site it's "downhill moment" until when Radar left in the beginning of season 8.

This is really hard because I like just about every hit sitcom of the 70's. The one I would pick probably would be Rhoda. I thought the hype was a lot bigger than the show deserved and after she divorced Joe I lost all interest in it. That doesn't mean I don't like it though. Like I said the 70's were probably my favorite decade for sitcoms.

In philly, the term ass is used to describe anything that is BAD such as sporting teams, tv shows, etc.
