Melissa Etheridge Has Cancer, Cancels Tour

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Singer Melissa Etheridge has been diagnosed with breast cancer and has canceled upcoming tour dates to undergo treatment, her publicist said Thursday.

Etheridge, 43, will undergo surgery and a "speedy and complete recovery" is expected by her doctor, publicist Marcel Pariseau said in a statement.

The cancer was detected early and Etheridge has been receiving treatment, Pariseau said.

"I am fortunate to be under a wonderful doctor's care and thankful that this was caught early," Etheridge said in the statement. "I am looking forward to a quick and full recovery."

Etheridge and actress Tammy Lynn Michaels held a commitment ceremony in September 2003. The musician, who lives in Los Angeles, shares custody of a daughter and son with former partner Julie Cypher, who had the children through artificial insemination using a sperm donation from rocker David Crosby.

Etheridge's latest album, "Lucky," was released in February. Refunds for tickets to her upcoming shows will be available where they were bought; the entertainer's Web site says she had been scheduled to play 11 dates in seven cities this month.

I hope all goes well for her. I think "Lucky" is her best album to date. She is such a great woman.

Even though I think homosexuality is immoral according to god,
I do wish Melissa Etheridge well in battling her cancer.

Her sexual preference has nothing to do with getting this disease. Sheesh:rolleyes:

Could you make a more idiotic statement? If it was someone straight, would you say "my goodness, she's in a normal, heterosexual relationship, I wish her well in battling cancer"? Why even bring that up? Seems like the case is more homosexuality is immoral according to you.

Anyway, I hope that Melissa comes through and ends up cancer free.

will you get over yourself? I can't stand self-righteous homophobes and with few exceptions, am not very fond of right-wingers, but I don't bring that into everytime something happens to someone who is something I dislike. When Reagan died, I could've gotten on a soapbox about how I hate the man for how he handled the AIDS epidemic in the 80's, saying it was a punishment from god, but you know... I had more class than to bring that up and insult him at a time when everyone else was mourning him.

You just hate gays because you're afraid you might have the same feelings they do? You do seem to like a lot of feminine things for a guy.

Get well soon Melissa! You and your sisters and brothers are needed on this planet to teach the bible thumpers that "God" supposedly loves us ALL and made us ALL in his own image. Therefore God is a homosexual, and proud of it! Why would he make them if he were going to "hate" them. Does God "hate" humans? That's not the kind of God I believe in and neither should you!

I know, I agree 100%

The fact Melissa is such an outspoken and proud lesbian and staunch gay rights advocate is the reason why she is such an icon in the community.

I wish Webwarrior would step off his soapbox for once, a lot of people don't have any more tolerance for self-righteous brimstone preachers than he does for gays.

How about keeping the homophobic and nasty remarks out of this thread. For God's sake, the poor woman has cancer.

I did wish her well as far as her battle with cancer.

Bringing up how you feel about her sexual orientation is inappropriate it's like someone saying to you "I hate you but I hope you feel better" how would you like someone to say that to you?

Webwarrior, that comment was completely out of line. Get a ****ing grip and think before you speak next time, Jesus Christ... in your own house it's fine, but you're on a public message board, for Christ's sake, where many people including myself were highly offended by that comment.

Anyway- I heard about this yesterday. Melissa is AWESOME. I hope and pray that she has a full recovery. She's a wonderful, talented woman.

I don't know her songs that well, but I wish her the best. Cancer is a horrible thing to battle, because I watched my aunt suffer and survive. Today she is healthy and happy and stronger. Hang in there Melissa. :)

I don't care if she likes guys, girls or mules - her music kicks a**!!

Anybody who stands up for what they truly believe, regardless of what the masses think, is cool in my book

I love Melissa and hope things go okay for her

exactly, Melissa is Melissa. Anyone who is offended by her is the one with the real problem. She's just being herself

I love Carson Kressley's comments on Queer Eye For The Straight Guy. He came up with one recently that hit the nail on the head for me. He said something like "Heterosexuals are really cool. It's where we get all the GAY people from!" In other words people who go off flapping their gums about gay people usually don't realize the gay people were born from hetero parents. Ergo, heterosexuals having gay sons and daughters should burn in hell too--for creating the homosexuals. It's all so assinine but people with zero tolerance for others and other beliefs usually call themselves christians, too. I'd rather be the child of a gay couple than the child of a fundamentalist lunatic.

Knowing what it's like to lose a mother to liver cancer, I pray for Melissa Etheridge to get well soon and to take care of herself.:(

And in case anyone is wondering, God DID NOT punish her with breast cancer for being a lesbian.

OMG have a little goddamn sympathy for her:mad: the poor lady has cancer and all you do is condemn her for her homosexuality. we're all people.

And I wish her well. She's very talented and a great woman.

whether your moralistic attitudes "approves" of Melissa's "lifestyle" or not, you gotta admit, she IS a rocker. As opposed to most of the "girl rock" stuff out right now which is really more pop than rock. Melissa is the definition of a female rock'n'roller alongside Joan Jett.
