What are your predictions for who will win at the 21st Annual MTV Video Music Awards? My predictions are:

Best Video - Outkast "Hey Ya"

Best Male Video - Usher featuring Lil Jon and Ludacris "Yeah" (though I would love it if Prince won for "Musicology")

Best Female Video - Beyonce "Naughty Girl" (Alicia Keys deserves to win it for "If I Ain't Got You", but I like Beyonce also)

Best Group Video - D 12 "My Band"

Best Pop Video - Britney Spears "Toxic"

Best Rap Video - Jay Z "99 Problems"

Best R&B Video - Usher "Burn"

Best Rock Video - Jet "Are You Going To Be My Girl?"

Best Dance Video - Beyonce "Naughty Girl"

Best Hip Hop Video - Outkast "Hey Ya"

And Destiny's Child will open a show with a surprise preformance, and Dave Chappelle will have the crowd laughing in stiches.

I want Prince to win for Best Male Video or perform on the show. Anything other than that, I don't care. But with his Musicology tour in Denver on Saturday and Seattle on Monday, I doubt he'd make a trip to Miami just to appear at the awards.

I turned on the pre-show but I've gotta turn it off, all this celebrity sugar is making me sick. "You look fabulous, what are you wearing?" Ashanti apparently punctuates all her sentences with a giggle. If there's no surprise Prince appearance, the awards show is gonna be a dud for me.

AHHH I absolutely cannot stand Ashanti, I turned the channel when I saw her and then turned it on again after I figured it was safe  ....I'll be doing the same when Ashlee Simpson comes on. The show itself should be good and I wouldn't be surprised if there was a surprise perfomance by Prince, so hang in there Vashti.

Actually I would be surprised if Prince showed up, only because his tour is on the West Coast. I was just hoping that since he doesn't have a concert scheduled tonight, it might be a possibility that he'd be on the show.

Suchin Pak is so bubbly it's irritating. She's almost making me wish Tabitha Soren was still around.

Awww, I didn't know Prince was already on the west coast. He was just in Philly a couple nights ago so I figured he was still around somewhere. I don't like SuChin Pak much either, I think Quddus should have handled the red carpet instead of her, but what are ya gonna do? I'm really looking forward to Alicia's and Kanye's performances.

OMFG did everyone just see the most awesome performance....STEVIE WONDER at the VMA's. He performed w/ Alicia Keys and Lenny Kravitz and it was awesome. I was soooo happy to see Stevie :D

Dean Winchester
08-29-2004, 10:26 PM
this is the first year I have avoided the VMA's like the plague... the roster is like 99% rap... and Hoobastank.

Whatever happened to the diversity, a little rock, a little r&b, a little pop, a little rap, maybe two or three legends (and I don't mean as a "special guest performer"?), The VMA's used to kick, now they suck

BowWowsBaby

I thought it was pretty good....The performances were good (Jet was good, Usher was as sexy as ever, Nelly and Christina were great, and don't even get me started on Stevie, Alicia, and Lenny cause that just kicked ass), and the Jon Stewart parts were pretty funny, Omarion was lookin good when he presented best female video (that boy can sing acapella too). Overall, I really liked it.

So far the Nelly/Christina and the Alicia/Stevie/Lenny performances were the only things I liked about this show. Still waiting for Outkast.

There were some really great performances this year, I was pretty surprised. The tribute to Ray Charles was nice but it would have been better if they would have had a moment in silence before going right to the beastie boys only seconds after the tribute speech was finished.

The Alicia Key/Stevie Wonder/Lenny Kravitz preformance and the Outkast preformance were the only good preformances.

I think Outkast is getting sick of preforming "Hey Ya". I still like the song.

Speaking of Outkast, I was right, they won video for the year.

I wish Dave Chappelle hosted the show. He could have saved the VMAs, which outside of his comedy, and the two preformances I mentioned above, really wasn't good this year.

MTV should bring the VMAs back to New York.

I agree... the VMA's were a complete mess a year. It was clearly obvious that there were MANY technical problems. I'm 99% sure that the thing with Omarion singing acappela of the best female nominees wasn't planned, something went wrong.

This also seemed to be the first year when some BIG nominees were missing- in example, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Maroon 5. There were no surprises, special performances, was there even a tribute to Rick James?!... The only person who acknowledged him was Dave Chappelle.

The complete "no-host" thing sucked... big time. Why didn't they get Dave to do the opening number instead?

There were NO big performers, who the heck cares for Kanye West, Hoobastank, Jet, Poly(something) Spree, Petey Pablo, and the Terror Squad. Hopefully Usher tivo'd this, once he gets home he's going to realize how full of it he is. He always claimes to be a top performer, his opening performance was terrible. I guess I had higher expectations.

The only performances I considered enjoyable were by... Alicia Keys with Stevie Wonder and Lenny Kravitz, and Outkast was just okay, I've seen them do better. I'm sure you guys know I'm a Christina fan, but I will always be the first to admit whenever she does something less than spectacular, for example, last year's performace was bland, but this year she was GREAT, it was one of the few highlights of the show. I also have to give Yellowcard some props, I'm not a fan of theirs, but they gave a very strong performance.

I like it hen Usher strips  .......Anyways, I guess I'm the only one that thought the awards were pretty much worthwhile. Some of the performances sucked (ie. Hoobastank, Polyphonic Spree, Fat Joe/Petey Pablo,/etc.), and some of them were rather disappointing (ie. Kanye West but it was kind of cool to see Chaka Khan on stage even though it was rather predictable), but some were awesome (ie. Stevie Wonder/Alicia Keys/Lenny Kravitz, USHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!, and Nelly & Christina).

why do so many rap acts have this idea that they can't actually score a hit single on their own? Collaborations are supposed to be the exception, not the rule. The merging of two artists. Yet 90% of the rappers out there who are popular right now don't really know how to actually do something on their own.

One of the reasons Outkast was so popular was because Hey Ya and Roses were songs that didn't have the aide of any guest stars, they worked fine as they were.

As much as people wanna make fun of the "Cheesy" likes of MC Hammer, Tone Loc and the sort... at least they didn't rely on guest-stars to make their songs popular.

I don't think Hey Ya and Roses not having guests had anything to do with them being popular, that's just a case of right place at the right time for Outkast. The commercial/critical acclaim just took hold and whatever Outkast did just happened to get some notice. Andre 3000 could have recorded himself eating a bag of Doritos and it might've hit the top ten. Just because the trend seems to be rap artists collaborating with one another, that doesn't suggest that any of them couldn't have the same popularity with a song if they didn't.

By the way, MC Hammer relied on tons of guest stars to make his songs popular: Rick James, Prince, the Chi-Lites, James Brown, etc. and that's even worse than the collaborations.

Dean Winchester

am I the only person who thought Roses was a better video? Paul McCartney did the same video for Coming Up in the early 80's as Hey Ya was.

well, the prob is that collabs are so overdone. Duets are always fun, but when done in moderation. Many of the hot rappers haven't shown they can carry a song on their own because they always wanna bring in guests.

I don't understand why MC Hammer got crucified for blatant sampling when P. Diddy did the same thing and MTV still kisses his butt. I'll Be Missing You was as blatant theft as U Can't Touch This was IMO.

Good observation! The Hey Ya video was a combination of Paul McCartney's coming up and also the Beatles appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. The reason I say that is because if you watch the Beatle first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show there was mass hysteria with the girls in the audience. So we know that Andre 3000 is a fan of the Beatles and Paul.

I saw only a little of the show, when Bee (Beyonce) won. Would someone please tell her mother to stop dressing her like a hooker!!!! And Jay Z looked like her pimp.

 ......I was thinking the same thing. I couldn't believe B won best female video for Naughty Girl (I wouldn't care if it was for "Me, Myself, and I" but I really don't like "Naughty Girl" even if my man Usher is in the video) Oh an there acceptance sppeches were just so beautiful ("What up B", "What up Jay").....Ah well
