Boy, 3, chokes to death on popcorn at movie

VALLEY STREAM, New York (AP) -- A 3-year-old boy choked to death while eating popcorn at a movie theater.

Deontea Riley, of New York City, was at the Sunrise Multiplex Cinemas in Long Island's Valley Stream watching "Alien vs. Predator" with his parents and older brother when he began to choke shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday, Nassau County police said.

The family all had been eating from a small tub of popcorn when Elaine McIntosh, the boy's mother, saw that her youngest son was choking.

His parents rushed him out of the theater where they performed the Heimlich maneuver without success.

"I was trying everything," his father, Eddie Riley, told the Daily News in Tuesday's editions. "I was trying to put my finger down his throat. I didn't feel anything."

Police arrived shortly afterward and tried to clear the boy's mouth and perform CPR, but he was pronounced dead at Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre.

His body was taken to the Nassau University Medical Center morgue pending a medical examiner's report.

I would not fault the parents necessarily for letting the child eat the popcorn, but now we know better.

Very sad.

thats terribly sad....it seems like one of those freak occurences to me...I mean, who would think twice about it...popcorn practically melts in your mouth and the kernals (sp?) are so small it seems almost impossible to choke

I was thinking the same thing how in the hell can you choke on popcorn? Besides a 3 year old has teeth there's no reason that kid couldn't have popcorn.

I guess I'm more confused as to why the parents brought their 3 year-old to watch Alien vs. Predator.

Yeah, if their priority was in favor of watching a good, (well bad) violent flick rather than the concern of what they let their child watch.

that's really sad, but it wasn't the parents fault..

personally I think it's no big deal at that age I was watching Jaws and whenever Freddy Krueger came out I was watching that too. Hell I was even watching soap operas LOL

As long as you teach your kids that it's fake and not to copy anything in the movie than I think it's ok. I wouldn't let them watch them alone.

No, you can't really blame the parents..I mean you really could choke on anything. Just one of those freak accidents.
