I'm not a hater, and by the way, there are other words in the english language besides "hater."
I cannot stand her
I'm not jealous of ridiculous people. I'll take my life the way it is right now over hers any day.
I like artists with substance.
My cat sings better than her and sings more octaves.
My cat has sold more records.
Why would I be jealous over what celebrity really is? I know I'd never want celebrity. Also, I'm very happy with the way I am.
The only time I'll ever be jealous is if J.Lo can keep a relationship longer than me. I'm not married or anything yet, but either way....doubt that I'll ever be jealous of that.

I Wish I Could Sing As Good As Her
That's "I wish I could sing as well as she does" - which I don't because she doesn't have the best voice. She's competent and makes money. But she's no artist.

I don't like her, I think she's annoying and every song sounds the same. I don't think she can act and I think she's a snob. And all the marriages she's had is disgusting. I don't like her, at all, and the fact that you continue to badger us with J. Lo topics, while, I know, it's wrong to do, but it's just making me hate her...EVEN MORE.
Just shut the hell up about J. Lo for two frikin seconds. Do you see anybody else here beating anybody else over the head with their tastes in music? I would like you to tell me who my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE solo artist. Yea, YOU CAN'T.
Oh, btw, "Don't be fooled by the rocks that I got, I'm still, I'm still Jenny from the block" hardly compares to "Eleanor Rigby, picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been, lives in a dream, waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door. Who is it for?"

She's just a Selena wannabe. Actually I shouldn't even be disrespecting Selena by putting her name in the same sentence as JLo. Forgive me Sel.
The only thing they will remember about Jlo is the fact that she can't stay with 1 man for at least a year. She's a tramp simple as that.

THANK YOU. Had it not been for Selena, Jennifer Lopez wouldn't be anywhere. Had Selena still been alive, J.Lo would have just been another face in the crowd. The whole singing/acting/clothing line/perfume thing is just what Selena was doing before she died...Jennifer just tried to finish what Sel started, in my opinion. I can't have any respect for anyone who does that.
Not to mention, J.Lo is untalented in my book.

I don't see the Selena analogy myself, people forget that even tho Selena was a Tejano superstar, she was about as well known to Anglo-America as a British superstar like Will Young when she was alive.
I think "Gloria Estefan wannabe" would fit better because Gloria was huge in the English speaking world too, Selena's popularity was almost exclusive to the Hispanic world (not saying things wouldn't have changed once she would've released her English album had she lived... but just as it really was).

Are you a Selena fan? If not, then you wouldn't know. Not to be mean, but most Selena fans know more than nonfans, obviously, and I think we know what we're talking about. The movie doesn't tell her whole story.

well, you don't have to be a fan or not to know that outside of Hispanic hotspots like Miami, San Antonio and Los Angeles, Selena was unknown. When she died, it was the first time many Americans had ever heard of her. Yes, J. Lo played her in a movie, but I don't see why people claim "if it wasn't for Selena, J. Lo would be nobody". Kurt Russell was Elvis in a movie in the 70's but nobody says "if it wasn't for Elvis, nobody would know who Kurt Russell is". Considering that J. Lo has always presented herself as an English artist first, Latina artist second... someone like Gloria Estefan would be a more fair comparison because most J. Lo fans were NOT Selena fans.

we aren't talking about that we are talking about the fact that since JLO played Selena it's like she's trying to finish where Selena left off. Selena had her own clothing line now she does, Selena had her own perfumes now she does. Selena was a singer Jlo wasn't one until she was in the movie.

Oh Dear God. Whether you believe it or not, Selena was known outside of the Hispanic community. There were a lot of non-Hispanics that knew, liked and respected her. So it wasnt like people were completely oblivious to who she was. Yes, Jennifer Lopez played Selena and blah blah blah. But the woman is talentless. She can't sing. She can't act her way out of a paper bag. I know many people who would agree. Even J.Lo's co-stars have said that she wouldn't be anywhere if it hadn't been for Selena. Making that movie put her on the map. Had she not been given that chance, she would not be as a big a celebrity as she is now. She probably wouldn't have been any kind of celebrity. How many people think Kurt Russel is talentless? I've heard praise after praise about that man. So, that wouldnt be a fair comparison. And it doesn't matter whether J.Lo's fans weren't Selena fans because most Jennifer Lopez fans weren't Gloria Estefan fans either.

It seems that you fail that grasp that Buffyslayer appears to be saying that Salena did not have a CHANCE to become famous because of her untimely death. I dont think I have ever heard anything by Selena, but am sure she was more talented than Jennifer Lopez, and I'm pretty sure Buffy agrees (not to put words in anyones mouth, but you appear to be saying she wasnt that famous, not that she wasnt talented)

exactly, who knows where Selena might've taken off if she lived. It's just that I don't see the media's infatuation of comparing the two. J. Lo was already a rising star at that point anyways, she'd done Anaconda and Money Train, it's just Selena was the first role where people really put a name to her face, but it's not like she wasn't getting work already.
But... as J. Lo was directed at a different audience than Selena, I never saw why to compare it. It's not like how Ashanti was plucked out and groomed to be Aaliyah's successor right as soon as Aaliyah died.
Plus, if anyone is to blame for J. Lo's music career, can't it be P. Diddy? He's the one she slept with and then convinced her that she had a good singing voice. (therefore another reason to dislike him)
Shouldn't every Hispanic female singer suddenly be coined "Selena ripoffs" then? J. Lo is more a Mariah Carey wannabe IMO. She basically stole Mariah's career from her by doing the exact same things, but slightly fresher (Mariah is a better singer, but her music hit the wall in the late 90's). Hell, the comparisons between Mariah and J. Lo (save the fact Mariah can sing and J. Lo can't) are eerie.

I think the both of you are failing to grasp the fact that MandieR1980 and I, as Selena fans, were simply discussing the similarities between Jennifer and Selena. It had nothing to do with the movie or any of that. We were discussing something that most non-Selena fans don't really have much of a say in since most people don't bother to research before they state an opinion.
So before you go off on tangents about what the facts are and who J.Lo should really be compared to, let me say a few things: I've spent the last seven years studying and examining Selena's career in depth. I've read books and watched documentaries. I've seen interview after interview, read article after article. I've spent lots of time looking into the life and career of Selena, not just because I'm a fan but because it's truly interesing. So, I think I'd know more about what I'm talking about in this situation that most of the people on this board. There are inevitable similarities between Selena's career and Jennifer Lopez's post 'Selena' career. It's there. Ask any Selena fan and most will tell you. It really has nothing to do with the fact that Jennifer played Selena in the movie or any of that. It's how everything played out afterwards. There are a lot of people that base their opinions just on seeing how Jennifer's career is going. They only see what Jennifer has done and all that. The thing is, Selena did it all before. In the Hispanic community, Selena was a pioneer. And to see Jennifer, after playing Selena in a movie, do almost the exact same things as Selena...it makes you wonder. Jennifer may have been directed at a different audience, but people who fail to see the similarities between J.Lo and Selena are the ones that know nothing about Selena's career. They're the ones that probably have only seen the movie and heard a few songs and base their opinions on that.
And as for "Selena did not have a CHANCE to become famous because of her untimely death." Selena was already famous, maybe not so much so in the English market but she really couldn't have asked for more fame than she had.
Jennifer was pulling in roles such as the one in 'Money Train' and 'Anaconda', but if I remember correctly, 'Anaconda' was made after 'Selena'. When she did 'Money Train' no one knew who she was. Like I said, she was just another face in the crowd. Nobody knew who she was until after 'Selena' therefore making her a household name when 'Anaconda' came out. So that's where I stand on that.
Where does P.Diddy fit into this? Yeah he helped her out musically and blah blah blah. But it was Jennifer herself that went out lookimg for a record deal. She got one and after that came P.Diddy.
Not every Hispanic female singer should be labeled as a Selena ripoff. The only other one I can think of is Jennifer Pena. That's it. Most others hold their own.
So, I've stated my opinions. That's that.

god, if there is one pet peeve of mine, it's "I'm a bigger fan than you, therefore I'm better" types. People who are that way with Janet Jackson have almost made me embarassed to say I'm a fan of hers. Because I am a bigger Madonna fan and because I thought All For You was a crappy album automatically negates being a fan since 1986 according to a few hardcore Janazis who worship every little thing she does. You're acting exactly the same way about Selena and how everyone who doesn't love Selena as much as you are stupid and have no right to an opinion.
And why did you not add 2 cents about Mariah Carey? Do you NOT see how much she's copied Mariah's image and style? If J. Lo hasn't stolen from Mariah, then who has ever stolen from whom? Hell, there was a huge controversy that caused Mariah's exit from Sony because J. Lo actually stole one of Mariah's samples because Tommy Mottola (another thing both have in common) let J Lo preview Mariah's Glitter cd months before it's advance. J. Lo even changed his image so she could look more and more like Mariah.
Don't get so damn defensive. There are artists I'm sure I am a bigger fan of and know more about than you do... but you don't see me going "you don't know as much about them as I do, so you have absolutely no right to speak an opinion about them".

When was I this rude to you? Each time I've gone back and forth with you, I've done it with intelligence and respect. Obviously not something you're doing at the moment.
Did I ever specifically say I was better than you or anyone else because I was a fan? I think not. I was just saying that since I do happen to know a bit more about this situation than others here, my points are valid and factual. Most people base their opinions simply on what they see and most of the time, what people see is not actually what the situation is. As is the case with you and some others here. More often than not, the only time someone's points are valid and factual are when it comes to things they know.
As for the Mariah thing, I don't know much about Mariah to be completely and utterly honest with you. I can't share opinions, make valid points and speak intelligently without knowing the facts. So, that's why I did not add my two cents when it came to Mariah.
Being defensive about what? Anyway, I never said you had no right to speak openly about it. It may have sounded that way, but that was not my intention at all. It is better, in my opinion, if you know something about it. Therefore, you can back up your argument with facts.

So their judgments and assumptions, really aren't based on anything except the movie or the fact that she died at age 23. In a situation like this, your opinions almost alway have to be based on fact because we're not talking about music or style or any of that. We're talking about a person's career and accomplishments. It's like saying "Oh, I think Michael Jackson is unsuccessful." When obviously, that's not true. If someone said that, people would fly off the handle and start attacking. It's the same exact thing. It's a fact based situation.

well, you were saying that only Selena fans have the right to have an opinion on the subject, and that those whose knowledge of her mostly comes from the movie and maybe a documentary and a song or two have no right to speak our minds about it. Maybe you didn't mean it the way it sounded, but the way it came across was very "us vs. them" If you didn't mean for it to sound as defensive as it came across, then I am sorry, but the way it sounded was "if you're not a hardcore Selena fan, you don't have the right to an opinion".

well, you were saying that only Selena fans have the right to have an opinion on the subject, and that those whose knowledge of her mostly comes from the movie and maybe a documentary and a song or two have no right to speak our minds about it. Maybe you didn't mean it the way it sounded, but the way it came across was very "us vs. them" If you didn't mean for it to sound as defensive as it came across, then I am sorry, but the way it sounded was "if you're not a hardcore Selena fan, you don't have the right to an opinion".
I didn't mean it like that at all. That is far from the way I think about anyone. I'm very open minded and understanding and I apologize for coming across that way.

 that was hilarious. me and some other people from school used to draw that j. lo thing on our hands around the time it premiered.

exactly, who knows where Selena might've taken off if she lived.
EXACTLY...and your also right about ashanti (wwho is also untalented)...that still pisses me off!

shouldn't be too too long, they usually rotate their episodes about once every 4-6 months, and they last aired the J. Ho episode in March (tho it made the "Most Notorious Episode" special back in July) so it should be in the near future

This is one of those topics that I wasn't gonna even respond to, but I just...I feel the need.
First of all, um, have you noticed that your poll is a little one-sided? Not sure if you realized.
Anyway, here's where I stand. If J-Lo were the greatest singer on the planet (which...I mean...ha!), I would still despise her. She's a pitiful human being. No role model of mine goes through men like that and doesn't even bat an eye. The celebs I respect are the ones who have actual morals. But thanks for taking the opportunity to share your beloved queen with the rest of us lowly peasant people. Really...it's an honor.

Your poll is one sided because it implys that if we hate J-Lo then we are jealous of her. You can hate someone without being jealous.
Also you have every right to like her but it is kind of unnecessary to be posting topics asking why we don't like her. I particularly don't like her because she is untalented and hasn't done anything worthy of the credit that she is sometimes given.

Although some of her songs are okay, as david&mattie4ever said, she doesn't appear to have any morals and she doesn't deserve to be the "star" she is

no offense, but I don't see why "morals" has to do with how many boyfriends she's had? In the past 5 years, she's been in 4 relationships. That really isn't all that much. The only difference is that instead of just dating a man, she always has to rush into getting engaged.
Apparently she also seems to have this real fear about being single (I take it she never watched Sex And The City), she seems like the type who feels like she must have a man to complete her. Everytime she breaks up with someone, she has someone else lined up instead of taking a breather and enjoying life as a single woman for once.
I don't like J. Lo and I think she is untalented (I guess I'm a hater), but I don't see why because she hasn't met the person yet that she's gonna settle down with, makes her immoral. 4 relationships in 5 years, 3 of which lasted over a year (not counting Mark Anthony) really isn't that bad, considering you see people like the Hilton's and Britney (before "settling down") who are seen with 5 different men a month.

What makes her seem "immoral" is the fact that she's a bedhopper. Jumping from one man to another isn't exactly how most Catholics present themselves. And being that J.Lo claims to be Catholic, it makes her look immoral to a lot of people. I really don't care about all that. I don't see her as immoral. She's just....a bedhopper to me. lol.

that's true. I think it's more about how she has a new man as soon as she splits from the last one, that it makes it look like she has been unfaithful. It seemed like as soon as her and Cris Judd split... she was with Ben Affleck, and then as soon as she broke up with Ben, she was suddenly with Marc Anthony.
It seems like part of her is insecure and feels like she needs a boyfriend/husband to complete her. Probably low self-esteem if you don't think you can exist unless you're in a relationship.

That sucks....I know so many women who think they can't be on their own without a man. I WOULD (theres the end of my serious quote of the year lol) feel bad for her in that respect....but thats not the case w/ her in fact her movies and music blow and thats how she gets her attention!

I'm just angry about the fact that she was in a relationship with Ben forever, and then, 3 seconds after they break up, she's married to another guy. That's not exactly what I would call having "Christian values."
I mean, if a celebrity just goes through a lot of companions, it's one thing, but she got herself as much media hype as she could through the whole Bennifer legacy. I simply can't bring myself to respect that.

that's the real reason I dislike her music. She doesn't take music seriously as an artform, she'll just jump on whatever bandwagon that might make her stay hot for 5 more minutes. When Latin was the rage, she did Let's Get Loud, when Cher-Believe-esque dance songs were the rage, she did Waiting For Tonight, when Rodney Jerkins was everywhere, she did If You Had My Love, then the whole rap thing. She has no sense of artistic integrity.
I mean, being a corporate commercial puppet is one thing when you're between 18-25... but it's another thing when you're 34 years old.
