AMOS, Que. - A 19-year-old man was charged with manslaughter Monday after his infant sister died from a gunshot wound, Quebec provincial police said.
Nulukie Kaitak also was charged with careless use of a firearm and criminal negligence causing death with a firearm, police said.
Kaitak will remain in custody in this community, about 650 kilometres northwest of Montreal in the Abitibi-Temiscamingue region, until at least Thursday when he will have a bail hearing.
He was brought from his small, isolated Inuit community of Salluit on the Hudson Strait, 3,200 kilometres north of Montreal, to Amos because its court handles crimes committed in the northern reaches of the province.
Police have said a man was having an argument on the phone in a downstairs room at his mother's house when he picked up a .22-calibre Magnum rifle and fired several shots into the ceiling.
One bullet pierced the ceiling and hit the child, who was in her crib.
The baby was taken to the village's only nursing station, where she was pronounced dead.
