Van Halen Setlist Revealed

Van Halen kicked off the first show of their world tour in Greensborough, North Carolina on Friday night (June 11) but it wasn't exactly the all hit setlist fans were expecting.

The first show was heavy on the Hagar era with only six of the 23 strong setlist dating back to the David Lee Roth era.

An interesting (and surprise) inclusion were two songs from Sammy's solo albums. 'Eagles Fly' from 1987 and 'Deeper Kind of Love' from 2000 were placed back to back in the middle of the setlist. Missing completely were the better known 'Jamie's Crying', 'Running With The Devil', 'Dance The Night Away' and 'Hot For Teacher'.

Van Halen play their second show tonight (June 13) in Hershey, PA. The tour ends in Lubbock, Texas on September 29.

Here is the setlist for June 11, 2004:

1. Jump (from 1984, 1984)
2. Runaround (from For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, 1991)
3. My Generation/Humans Being (Who cover/from Twister soundtrack, 1996)
4. Up For Breakfast (from Best of Both Worlds, 2004)
5. Mike Solo
6. Somebody Get Me A Doctor (from Van Halen II, 1979)
7. Poundcake (from For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, 1991)
8. It's About Time (from Best of Both Worlds, 2004)
9. Alex Solo
10. Top Of The World (from For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, 1991)
11. Unchained (from Fair Warning, 1981)
12. Why Can't This Be Love? (from 5150, 1986)
13. Eagles Fly (from Sammy Hagar solo I Never Said Goodbye, 1987)
14. Deeper Kind Of Love (from Sammy Hagar solo Ten 13, 2000)

I love Roth VH better, but they should just ditch the Roth songs and add more Balance/OU812 tracks, and maybe one or two "classic" Sammy songs, ala There's Only One Way To Rock or I Can't Drive 55

Yeah. Sammy's live renditions of Dave songs sound like ****.

I think that they could make a stronger set list if they dropped the solos. Eddie, Alex and Mike are great musicians, but if their solos were removed at least three more songs could be added to the line-up. I think they could add at least one more Roth era song. Sammy says that he is now more open to singing the old Roth tunes, but with the exception of "Unchained", they are playing the same Roth tracks that they have played everytime I've seen them live. They could add "Jamie's Cryin" "Everybody Wants Some" or "Hear About It Later" There is also not a single song from Balance in the whole set. If they dropped Sammy's two solo songs, that would also make room for more Van Halen classics. And who needs a cover of "My Generation"? I have tickets for both of their Chicago shows, and am very happy to see Sam back with the band, but I am not all that happy with the set list.

How about this:
1. Jump
2. Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do
3. Runaround
4. Humans Being
5. Up For Breakfast
6. Somebody Get Me A Doctor
7. Can't Stop Loving You
8. Jamie's Cryin"
9. Poundcake
10. It's About Time
11. Love Walks In
12.Top Of The World
13. Unchained
14. Why Can't This be Love
15. Learning To See
16. Best Of Both Worlds
17. Hear About It Later
18. Dreams
19. Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love
20. Right Now
21. You Really Got Me
22. When It's Love
23. Panama

I switched "When It's Love" and "Panama" around because the show should end with a rocker.
