with many tv shows, characters change in the looks dept. through time. Most of the time, hairstyles change, clothes change, etc... This is a thread devoted to tv shows where a character was either clean-shaven when the series started, and then grew facial, or where they had it when the show started and bought a razor.

Here are some of the biggies:
Family Ties - Michael Gross was cleanshaven the first season, then had a beard from seasons 2-7

Happy Days - Ron Howard was shaven during his initial run on the series, but when he came back the last season, he had a mustache

CSI - William Petersen grew a goatee in the third season, it might eventually go since he goes through phases with his facial hair

Miami Vice - Phillip Michael Thomas grew a beard around the fourth season, then shaved it back off not too far from the finale

Roseanne - John Goodman grew a beard in the beginning of season 8, shaved it after Jerry was born, then grew a goatee back in the last season (he was filming Big Lebowski at the same time)

Six Feet Under - Peter Krause had a beard the first half of season 1, hit the razor, and while he's sported stubble a few times since, he's never grown it fully back

any others?

Jonathan Frakes was clean shaven the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation but had a beard thereafter until the last ST:TNG movie, I think.

Jonathan Frakes grew whiskers two seasons into "Star Trek The Next Generation."
Also Avery Brooks Shaved his head and grew a goatee during his tenure on "Star Trek Deep Space Nine," which was really funny becasue he looked just like he did when he played the badass Hawk on "Spenser For Hire"

Matthew Perry sported facial hair once or twice during "Friends."

And who could forget B.J.'s "cheesy mustache" on "M*A*S*H."

Rembrandt Brown (played by Cleavant Dericks) on "Sliders" had a mustache in seasons 1-3. When the show came back for season 4, he shaved it off. He remained that way until the series finale (season 5).

Jimmy James (played by Stephen Root) on "NewsRadio" grew out a beard for three or four episodes in season 5.

Steve Rhoades (played by David Garrison) on "Married ... WIth Children" left the show in season 4. When he made a guest appearance in season 6, he had a beard.

Bud Bundy (played by David Faustino) on "Married ... With Children", I'm pretty sure he grew out a beard throughout the 11 year run.

Actually, from what I've read, Avery Brooks wanted to start out from day one with a shaved head and a goatee but the powers that be said no. They didn't want viewers to confuse him with Hawk from Spenser For Hire and its short-lived spinoff, A Man Named Hawk.

I think Turk, from Scrubs had a mustache for the first season, maybe the second season as well, but it was gone for this third season, if I'm not mistaken.

Darryl Bell (Ron Johnson) of a Different World started off without a moustache on the show, grew one, shaved it off for an episode where he had to pose as a woman ("The Getaway"), then grew it back.

All the male cast members of Cheers(except Woody)

Steve Rhoades (played by David Garrison) on "Married ... WIth Children" left the show in season 4. When he made a guest appearance in season 6, he had a beard.
He also grew a beard in an episode but in the end shaved it off. That was a funny episode

Another one-episode deal, Keifer Sutherland's Jack Bauer character had a full beard for part of the first episode of season two, shaved it off before the episode was over.

Colonel Taylor shaved his moustache also for the final season.

I can also think of a couple non-sitcom cases:

In Hill St Blues Joe Spano was clean shaven in year 1, grew a moustache in year 2, kept it through year 5 then shaved it off for years 6-7. In that same series, Michael Warren had a moustache for most of year 6. The actor who played Belker was clean shaven in real life, I don't know if he was always like that but the character always had a moustache.

In St Elsewhere Denzel Washington was clean shaven for about the first 3 years then grew a moustache which he kept until the end.

I think the actor who played Al on Home Improvement, either was clean shaven to begin with and then had a beard or had a beard and then shaved it. Anyone remember?

Jen1989, Al was clean shaven in an episode where they flashed WAY back to the first ever Tool Time episode, filmed long before the whole Home Improvement series started. Tim "The Toolman" Taylor, you might recall, had a beard. One other thing about this first ever Tool Time episode, the announcer was a very old lady, rather than Pamela Anderson or Debbe Dunning/Heidi Kepler (sp?).

Kelsy Grammer had a beard for the last season of "Cheers" (they had him shave it off for "Frasier" because they didn't think audiences would believe John Mahoney was his father iff he had it)

Micheal Gross was clean-shaven for the first season of "Family Ties", then grew a beard.

The same with Jonathan Frakes on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" tthen he shaved it off for the movie "Star Trek: Inserecction" (if you saw the movie, Deanna Troi shaaved it off while they were taaking a bath together!;) ) then grew it back for their last movie (I forget the name)

Avery Brooks shaved his head annd grew a goatee for the 3rd to 7th seasons of "Staar Trek: Deep Space 9"

Didn't Drew Carey grow a beard for a brief time on his show?
