Just saw on the news that Simon told the NY Times that he wants Di to win. Fantasia is going to get a contract anyways (Clive Davis already said so). For that reason, Diana will benefit the most. Oh I wish I wish I wish...

she is my strength when I am weak. she is my voice when I couldn't speak. she is my eyes when i couldn't see. she saw the best there was in me...

any Di fans are welcome to add what I have in my sig in theirs.

I am happy with tonights results, and for me, it's Fantasia 100%. Diana has grown on me, but Fantasia deserves this, no matter how you look at it. Sure, maybe she could get it on her own, but not crowning her as American Idol, when she has been consistently the best is just wrong. You cannot punish someone for being good. She wants to be the American Idol, and she deserves it. Diana will get a contract too, she is loved by a lot of people...

Being declared the winner will not make or break either of the girl's record careers. It's mainly for title and bragging rights.
They will both get record deals. Look at Clay. He's more popular than Ruben!

It makes people aware, and gives the fans of the runner-up the motivation to make us be heard to show everyone who we think is the real Idol. Of course, this is not in Justin Guarini's case. Im rooting for Diana all the way, but even if she doesnt win- she'll be here a long time especially because shes so young. However, I dont find this idol to be as popular (about 10-20 million less people watch this year than last), and this year nobody seems to have a clear favorite. Last year it was Ruben and Clay with all the fans, but this year you had your JPL fans, John Stevens, and the fans of the '3 divas'. So who knows? Either way, I dont see anyone this season doing a better job than last years 2 idol's. I could be wrong, but I just dont see them being nearly as successful. Not that Im hoping them to fail- they deserve to be where they are!:)

And there's a good chance that Diana will not get a contract. Clive explicitily stated that if Diana wins, he will produce an excellent album from her. But if not, he will not be signing her. He is signing Fantasia regardless though. I know that he isn't the only record producer, but it won't be like last year when both Ruben and Clay were signed by RCA.

When did he say this? I just saw him on a show saying he thinks Fantasia should win...that's been made clear throughout the whole competition. Why would he act so reluctant to compliment Diana if he wants her to win?...anyway, I dont think Clive said that he was going to give her a contract, he said that if he had heard her singing the way she sang that night in Kansas City, or somewhere, that he would sign her because she sang whatever song so well. Hopefully he will give her a contract, but I dont think what he said Tuesday night meant that he was GOING to sign her...

I understand what you've been saying about Diana needing this win more than Fantasia. Fantasia will be guarenteed a contract regardless, so if Diana takes the AI crown, they'll both win. Yeah, I wouldn't think Simon would say Diana should win. What I heard him say was that he though Diana WOULD win. I assume he thinks Fantasia should though. I didn't read the NY Times, but I did hear him say just what I posted.

And yes, Clive didn't promise Fantasia a contract if she loses. I also hope she'll get signed if Diana wins. It's a pretty good assumption that she will.

The term Idol has more connotations than just being a good singer. It is someone you can look up and sets an example. Fantasia dropping out of high school and not getting a GED is not a good example. Neither is getting pregnant at the age of 16. I don't look up to that. Fantasia would not even take the initiative to get a job after having Zion. She said that she got support from her family financially. If that's the case, she should have found some sort of child care so she could go out and get a job! Part of growing up fast is being able to eventually be independent. Sitting at home eating is not going to get her anywhere. Teenagers today face all sorts of pressure to be successful and Fantasia seemed to throw that to the wayside after Zion came along. That's one of the reasons why I consider Clay my American Idol. He has a degree in special education and will always have a fallback if singing doesn't work out. I admire Diana because here she is younger than me, and she almost has a career lined up for her. She's worked her butt off all these years of competing to try and get to this point. I do hope that she finds something else that she likes though to fall back on. That's my reasoning. Fantasia tried to present herself Monday as someone who grew up fast because of Zion, but to me, having a job should be at the top of the list of growing up. There are lots of single parents that are making it on their own.

I'd rate AP English as a 9. I say that because for me, the class went against pretty much everything that I have ever learned about writing. My teacher threw out uniform structure and five-paragraph essays on the first day of school. From that point on, writing was all about developing an original idea on self-selected nonfiction topics and working to satisfy the audience. It was hard for me to grasp because of all the choices that a writer has to make.

MAY 17, 2004
And the winner is...

The heat is on as American Idol finalists are whittled down from three to two this week. Who will be crowned queen?

By Elysa Chen and Tan Su Yin

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FANTASIA BARRINO, 19

HER singing can move people to tears, and her personal history, too, has been no less of a sob story.

Made pregnant by ex-boyfriend Brandel Shouse when she was 16, Fantasia Barrino was forced to drop out of high school.

She also endured physical abuse from Shouse, who later pleaded guilty to charges of 'choking Fantasia with both hands and punching her about the face and head'.

Being pregnant and unmarried was a crushing blow to the teenager's confidence, coming as it did on the back of her already low self-esteem when in school.

Kids in her native High Point, North Carolina, had ridiculed her physique, laughing at her for having a bottom that was too small and lips that were too big.

But she has clearly found herself through music. If her performances on American Idol are anything to go by, the single mother of a two-year-old daughter, Zion, looks to have picked up the pieces and moved right on.

Idol judge Randy Jackson has called her a 'young Aretha (Franklin)'.

Fellow judge Simon Cowell, with his brutally high standards, thinks she is 'the real thing', and considers her singing to be in a 'different league'.

Two weeks ago, judge Paula Abdul was driven to tears by her impassioned rendition of Barbra Streisand's What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life.

As to why words and music have both come easy for Barrino, who grew up singing in her church choir, look no further than her family's musical pedigree. Her parents have produced a record, and almost everyone on both sides of her family sings either gospel or pop music.

Her cousins are R&B duo K-Ci and JoJo (Cedric and Joel Hailey), who released the 1998 hit single, All My Life.

And Barrino would not have come this far without her family, who got her back on her feet after she left school. 'It's been hard,' says her mother Diane, a pastor. 'What you see coming out now is a lot of fight.'

And fought back Barrino has, against detractors of her voice or appearance.

'My lips are big, but my talent is bigger,' she declared at an Idol audition in February.

Unfortunately, talk like this has also led to the view that she is arrogant, which might explain her bottom three showing on two episodes of the show despite sterling performances.

But she has more than her fair share of admirers who appreciate the flavour she adds to the contest.

The 500,000 residents of Guilford County in North Carolina have officially declared May 6, 2004, Fantasia Barrino Day.

Big lips, a big fan base and big talent. Will these be enough to win her the crown?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Does that clear up anything?

Vegas Girl
05-21-2004, 06:37 AM
She sings in the choir at church, where her mom is the pastor...then becomes a pregnant teen. Boy, that must have been embarrassing for all of them.

Yes, she is talented, I'm not disputing that.

Well, I understand what you're saying, I guess, but she's trying to make a new way for herself and I think that it's something to be admired. Just because she had a baby and wasnt married doesnt say anything about her personality, right now that's all in her past, and she's trying to make a better future for herself and for her daughter. I dont see her as cocky at all, from all the video I've seen of her, she really seems like a caring and sensitive person, because she's always crying whenever someone gets voted off, and she cried when she got the 'key to the city'. Not everyone has a perfect past, Im sure Clay has skeletons in his closet. Also, what I admire about Fantasia is how free-spirited and uninhibited she is...she doesnt seem to care what people really think of her...she just performs, does her best and tries to have fun with it, and does so in her own unique way. Diana, no offense, just sounds like another Celine who does 10 second glory notes. But that's jmo.

As for AP English...all I can say is, I'm scared. But you probably didnt use prep books...I am, so that might help me...

Im still rooting for Diana, but Fantasia does have talent. I dont endorse her past, but I also dont necessarily frown upon it. People make mistake and life will go on. However I will agree with Jeff on that whole getting a job thing. Its nice that her parents help her financially- shes LUCKY because a lot of parents dont help at all, but she cant rely on them forever. Even getting a small job for a day or two a week would be enough to help her. I understand the term 'idol' too, and IMO Clay is my idol, but 'American Idol' is out to try and find the best popstar- not role model. Yah, that does count somewhat, but it cant count for too much because shes still there. And now Im starting to ramble and am forgetting what Im even writing about.

Fantasia isn't wasting her life. She's enriching it. She isn't moping around worrying about why she got pregnant. What's the point of dwelling on the past if it's just going to bring on heartache? She's not thinking "Why did I get pregnant?" she's thinking "What can I do to fix this and make it work?" She isn't going to drop her dreams because she got pregnant, but she's going to use her baby as an incentive for her dreams. She's trying to make it big so that she can support her family and so that she can give Zion a good life.

This is America, damn it, and everything is possible.

Diana really should win this. You know why? If Fantasia already knows for sure that Clive Davis will sign her, what's the point of winning? Diana doesn't already have a record deal. I think that if she loses, she won't be successful. Not sure why, but I just have this reaaaaaaaaally weird feeling. Fantasia though, win or lose, it's kind of a win/win situation for her.

No one knows if Fantasia will be getting a record deal for sure, and even if she does, that doesnt mean that we shouldnt vote for her because we think she might have a better chance of being successful than Diana...you shouldnt rob Fantasia of the American Idol crown just b/c she has a better chance of having a good career...if Fantasia does better than Diana on Tuesday, then she should be and deserves to be the American Idol.

Exactly. You can't rob the person with the talent, and give it to the one that doesn't. (not saying Diana doesn't have talent, Fantasia has been consistent every week, and Diana hasn't)

I think that if she loses, she won't be successful. Not sure why, but I just have this reaaaaaaaaally weird feeling. Fantasia though, win or lose, it's kind of a win/win situation for her.

If it takes AI for someone to be successful and they wouldn't make it otherwise, then they don't DESERVE to win. Not saying that's Diana's case, but if she's deserving of a singing career and loses AI, she should get a deal someplace. That's just how I think of it. I don't think she'd get screwed over. She's good. She should make lots of money at this.
