4/6 - "Friends In Low Places"

To prove that he and Alex are just like regular people after being chastised by his co-workers, Patrick takes his famous celebrity girlfriend to fellow teacher Kevin's (Wayne Knight) barbecue - and Alex turns out to be the hit of the party. But Patrick begins to sense that his friends are taking advantage of Alex's celebrity when she agrees to have the wedding of Principal Harris's (Dave Foley) daughter at her house, and the wedding guests end up paying more attention to Alex than to the bride and the groom. Amy Pietz also guest stars as Alex's publicist, Samantha.

ABC refers to Alex as a "famous celebrity" girlfriend? A little redundant, there, but who cares? Wayne Knight and Dave Foley in the same episode? Bring it on! :) :lol:

i dont know about anyone else but im starting to lose interest in the show...it just hasn't been funny

Point 1: Wayne Knight and Dave Foley spell greatness in comedy. Especially Foley. Love him. Almost everything he does is gold. I think this one is going to be awesome.

Point 2: Speaking for me, and me alone, humor is not the primary reason I tune in religiously to I'm with Her. The chemistry between the principals sells it for me every time. But that's me. :)

I agree with both rv and Sapphire. I dont think the last few episodes have been very funny (although Tuesday's episode wasnt bad, probably because it was a early episode) but it is still worth watching because of the chemistry amongst the cast. Not just the leads but the supporting cast as well. Just wish they had better material to work with.

I agree. I think this show is pretty good for a first year. The cast is great. I think the show has the possibility of being great. The writers next to take it to the next level. Will and Grace and Seinfeld level.

This one turned out pretty well. I loved how Alex bonded with Patrick's coworkers by fixing a keg and winning a rib-eating contest. The wedding scene was not only funny, it was nice how Alex pulled Patrick away from the brink when he was ready to chastise his fellow members of the Los Angeles school system for taking advantage of Alex - really classy how she took the inevitable in stride. :) And hats off to Wayne Knight for playing a guy who staples his pants! Hellooooooo, Kevin! :lol:

Two questions, though -

What was the point of playing Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" over the barbecue scene? :confused:

Regarding Patrick and Alex with Ringo Starr - anyone want to see Ringo on "I'm With Her" sometime? ;)

I think maybe they were trying to make it seem as redneck as possible to show the contrast between high and low class.

I am really not comfortable with this type of storyline. It just bothers me when they have people act all "starstruck" and foolish. Sometimes I almost wish the 4 main characters lived in a vacuum and they could just explore those relationships without the extreme celebrity stuff that was on display tonight

I give this one 5 out of 10 mainly because I hate this type of storyline.

Ditto. And the celebrity references are getting really old. It cheapens the show. Don't they know they don't have to do that? Missed Stevie and Cheri in this one. Although, Stevie dancing with a passed out brides maid was pretty funny. Dave Foley was also solid.

I agree. I hope the celebrity name dropping dies down in the next season.

I thought it was a fun episode. Definitley one on of the stronger ones of the recent batch (post-Oscars I guess). I liked seeing Alex tapping the keg and chowing down on ribs. Of course, I like seeing any woman doing those two things, so it might be just me.

Here's another theory. An earlier episode has a retired actor confusing Alex Young with Loretta Young; another episode features Burt Young as himself ("no relation"); "Sweet Home Alabama" mentions Neil Young by name (it was an answer song to Neil's "Southern Man"). Maybe this is Chris Henchy's idea of an inside joke - repeatedly referring to various real-life people named Young - just to see if anyone notices. Or maybe I'm going out on a limb with this theory. :)

This was a really good, fun-loving installment. Loved Ed's comment when Patrick walked into the faculty lounge in his suit and bow tie. "Close call. I was going to wear the same thing today." :lol:

Backyard party was great. I can totally understand how starstruck everyone would be when Alex Young walked in. Big name celebrity. Most of us would probably trip over our tongue trying to say the right thing. We would try to act cool, and all the while, our heart would be pounding. Having said that, I would agree that Wayne Knight was just a little over the top.

Perhaps fixing the keg made Alex more "down home" and amiable to the "common people." Either that, or they just thought she was, like, really cool for knowing what to do. :) Good times in any event.

"Sweet Home Alabama" complimented their fun and games perfectly. Brought to mind the feeling of the small town life from the Reese Witherspoon movie of the same name, though I've never actually seen that movie. May have been what they were aiming for. Steve's "Young Motif" theory is interesting, too.

Watching Alex get down with the partygoers. 'Nuff said.

Amazed by her for having such a strong view of the bigger picture when everyone was clearly taking advantage. Hat's off to her for understanding where she stands with Patrick's colleagues at the moment, and being okay with that. Alex, I salute you.

Dave Foley and Wayne Knight weren't quite as funny as I thought they would be, but they were still good, and had great moments. Knight's wife is so ugly, she's the cure for hiccups. :lol: Loved how Foley kept putting words in Alex's and Patrick's mouths. Great stuff. Cracked up when Stevie was dancing with the bride's maid, and she passed out in his arms. :D

Scale of 1 to 10, I give it a strong 8. This was more entertaining overall than "Eight Simple Rules for Dating a Celebrity" (that therapist was a real weight on the episode), but each were good in their own way.

I really like this one, but I agree with hurricaneez1. I think the show is better when it focuses on the Funtastic Four, to borrow from Stevie's vernacular. :) Supporting characters are great, but I'm totally immersed in the intimate little universe where Alex, Patrick, Stevie and Cheri exist by themselves. I do prefer that.
