Valley of the Dolls

Has anybody ever seen this 1967 film based on the bestselling novel by Jacqueline Susann? I first learned of this movie when I was seeing what was on TV using the cable guide (I have digital cable and you can use your remote to see the upcoming programs) and I came across the title of the film. It had one star (out of a possible 4) and the description was, "Three starlets turn to pills." I thought to myself, "I need to see this movie." I wanted to see what was so bad about it to warrant the lowest rating. I recorded it, watched it, and I was amazed. I didn't think it was that great a movie (I'd give it 2 to 2 1/2 stars out of 4) but at the same time I didn't think it was as bad as it was made out to be. The most interesting thing about the movie is the music and the theme song, sung by Dionne Warwick. I can hear that tune in my head right now as I'm typing this. I think the movie was a very interesting, cool, thought-provoking, and weird film all at the same time. Thanks to the Fox Movie Channel, I learned a lot because they had little factoids about the behind-the-scenes stuff, the actresses, etc. I learned that Judy Garland was originally cast in it but she backed out of it.

Who else has seen this film? I think I'd like to read the novel.

I heard that somebody said that there is going to be a remake of the movie and even though the remake is an updated version I have seen the movie and even though it is an oldie but goodie It still creeps me out until this day!!

Valley of the Dolls is one of my guilty pleasure movies, with Beyond the Valley of Dolls coming in awful close. Both are pretty campy, but I love 'em.

heh the screenplay for Beyond the Valley of the Dolls was written by none other than Roger Ebert.

I saw Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. It's rated NC-17 but I think it should be R.

I've seen that movie on the Drive-in Classics (http://www.driveinclassics.ca/index_flash.asp) movie channel. I thought it was pretty campy too.

I'm old enough to recall the book, The Valley of The Dolls, being all the rage. I haven't seen the movie in years, but I thought Patty Duke gave a terrific performance....and it's sad to see Sharon Tate, knowing her fate. Barbara Parkins was stunning, and when she's on the train with that beautiful song playing...it's a nice scene in the movie.

Jaqueline Susann led quite an interesting life. I read an in-depth article in Vanity Fair about her not that long ago.

Both Valley of the Dolls films (Beyond... sounded like a sequel, but it's an update) are out in a double-dvd set now, I've been looknig around for them to rent or buy. But I think I'll read the book first- I like reading the book first now instead of watching the film first (I'm reading The Talented Mr Ripley at the minute without having seen the film- though I'll surely watch it once I'm finished).

Did anyone else see Bette Midler's film 'Isn't she Great'? I saw most of it- it's a comedy where Bette plays the author, struggling to get the book published. It's an ok film- some really funny lines.

I Like that movie too! I read the book in the olden days!:eek: Patty Duke is such a good actress! And Sharon Tate(murdered by the Manson Faimily in 1969) is stunning! Barbara Parkins is lovely too! It does seem a little dated. But it is fun to watch!:happyface

I love this movie. I love Dionne Warwick singing the theme song too. She gave it her all........

Patty Duke was fantastic in this movie. She played her role with gusto. Sharon Tate was so beautiful. Everytime I see the movie and see Sharon I feel sad for what happened to her in real life. Even Susan Haywood was in this movie (Another favorite of mine). My favorite part - is the scene in the bathroom between Patty and Susan Heywood. ;)
