We have a new feature -- SitcomsOnline.com DVD Reviews!

Check out the main page, www.sitcomsonline.com to view DVD Reviews.

We will be reviewing DVD sets that have NOT been released to the public, so all fans can know ahead of time what to expect on their favorite shows' DVD set. Our goal is EVERY upcoming sitcom on DVD! Our first review is "What's Happening!!: The Complete First Season", yes this set has been released, but this is just a small taste is what is yet to come. Coming within a week are reviews of SAVED BY THE BELL SEASONS 3/4 (which isn't out until April 27!) and WILL & GRACE SEASON 2 (which isn't out until March 23!). We hope all fans will come to SitcomsOnline.com for the latest news and reviews on Sitcoms on DVD!

This is really going to be a GREAT feature and I hope everyone likes it, as DVD talk has been very popular here. And you heard right, we are working on reviewing EVERY upcoming DVD. Some titles include, the ones mentioned above, Married With Children Season Two, Sanford & Son Season Four, The King of Queens Season Two, Dick Van Dyke Seasons 3 AND 4, and Three's Company Season Two. Did I mention, these reviews will be up BEFORE the release date? :)

Thanks,
SitcomsOnline.com DVD Review Team (pavanbadal, TJ, TVJunkie101, and snowpeck)

Will reviews be featured only on the main page or will they also be posted in the forums so as to have a specific thread discussing a particular dvd release/review? To the reviewers, please note details like if there's an insert/episode listing and number of episodes per disc.

Good review Pav.
The King of Queens is probably my favorite show that I wouldnt buy on DVD.

Its VERY funny.... but Leah Remini's voice irritates me and sometimes makes it unbearable.
If the casting of her character had been different -- The King of Queens would be one of the best shows ever.

Yes, Three's Company for sure. I myself am doing that one. Probably in less than two weeks it'll be up.

Also, we were not able to get Friends Season 7, sorry about that guys, but we do have a replacement DVD review for the April 6 date, you'll see what it is (it's not technically a sitcom, but it's close enough, since Warner Bros. declined to give us Friends)...

Expect everything from May. Cheers, Frasier, I Love Lucy, Bernie Mac.

I'm just the opposite. I probably wouldn't like the show nearly as much if Leah wasn't cast as Carrie.

ANYONE in debate over whether or not to get this, first of all -- slap yourself.
THEN go out and buy this RIGHT AWAY.

I though "The Dick Van Dyke Show" was the greatest example on TV on DVD done right, but it has been replaced.
This is perfect for the average fan, and it will make you a fan if you're not one.

I agree with you barwars, I went out of my way (job not near shopping area) to get this on release day, I couldn't wait. One of my all time favorite shows, and they did a great job with the extras, especially the pilot episode.

I do however want to use your words on you concerning Freaks and Geeks: ANYONE in debate over whether or not to get this, first of all -- slap yourself.

Great reviews, Todd. I'm definitely excited about Laverne & Shirley. And, although your Happy Days review tempted me a bit to consider buying S1...I think I'm still gonna pass. I don't really care for the first 2 seasons, and don't like the show enough to buy the other 9. Sales for the first 2 HD seasons should be interesting, considering how different they are from the later, more "Fonzified" years.

I hope Todd does the reviews for the Diff'rent Strokes DVDs, as he seems to be a pretty big fan of that show.

If this doesn't meet CT's standards, then they might as well give up.
This is probably their biggest series next to Seinfeld.

true but you never know... I remember when Jeffersons and Sanford both released season 1 the same day, a lot of people really thought The Jeffersons was going to be a much bigger seller. Same thing with AITF, a lot of people would think it'd be a bigger selling title than Soap or What's Happening or Good Times, but yet it really wasn't

I think this will do well. On the most recent tv on dvd poll on Sony's site, where they asked what single title (as opposed to 5 choices) you would want, how much would you pay, what bonus features would you want to see, etc. I voted for Diff'rent Strokes, and I have a feeling it was a popular vote, seeing how they put some effort into bonus features with this one. This was probably the top request in that last poll, but that's just my speculation though.

"The set comes in a digipak, but each individual disc has its own slim case."

Confused about this part. It can't be packaged in digipaks and slim cases at the same time, unless it's 3 individual slim digipaks. Digipak would only refer to the part that holds the discs, not the outer cardboard box.

It seems Columbia Tristar has had a change of heart.

I'm confused about something here. The review for 227 mentions that the audio is "monorail", yet this series was broadcast in stereo when in orginally ran as well as currently on TVOne. I have taped all of the episodes that they have shown and they are in stereo. Why would CT give us a set with mono audio when the masters should be stereo?

Thanks,
Chad

Thanks,

Actually, you are correct about it being in stereo... I made a mistake in the review (it should be fixed eventually). The audio is in stereo according to the packaging, and it appears to be in stereo as I have rechecked. The reason I said it was in mono is because I thought that it sounded like it was mono and even though the packaging said stereo, I thought that may have been a mistake. In other words, what I'm saying is it is in stereo, but it isn't the greatest sounding stereo ever.

Thank you for bringing this up, otherwise I would not have doublechecked and fooled many people into thinking it actually was mono.

What I don't quite get is what this "monorail" audio is...Did they lay a microphone beside the town monorail and then overlay the sound of it going by onto the audio track: :p

I kid, I kid. :D. In all seriousness, good review. Planned to buy the set anyway, but, now knowing there's nothing wrong with the set (see: ALF), plan to get it for sure.

nice review for Dream On, I am thinking about it, probably down the road after some of the other stuff I want is out. I was an adolescent when I watched it in the early 90's on HBO but am willing to bet I'll appreciate it even more now that I am an adult, and I agree it did pave the way for shows like Sex And The City.

We only review some dramas. Usually pre-90s stuff. There will be some exceptions to that, such as late this summer when we review Lost and Desperate Housewives. Other than that, all pre-90s dramas, and EVERY sitcom.

Our Gilligan's Island S2 review is late because Warner is slow in getting things out to us. So, if the Feb. 8 sitcoms from Warner are not posted within a week or so, you know why.

Over the past year and a half, Sitcoms Online has strived to bring you the best DVD reviews available online. In response to "Final Numbers" in the reviews that may have been artificially inflated and the fact that the numbers may have seemed arbitrary, we have started to use a special algorithm to calculate final numbers. Therefore, the numbers will likely be lower, and thus more accurate, than numbers presented in past reviews.

the adjustments to the rating system (How our point system works (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/finalnumbers.html)) are GREAT - I give them 3 thumbs up :)

its easy to give a review with some arbitrary point system; it makes those numbers much more powerful when you can show how they were calculated.

I especially like the changes to the Special Features rating - make them earn those points!!

As much as I love Roseanne, if Season 1 is edited then I will not be buying it. It's OK if it's for a show I like moderately, but with a title you love, it's hard to accept that it's edited. I think Carsey-Werner is really full of itself, they waited until they found the right distribution companies for their titles, then goes off editing The Cosby Show and if the rumours are true Roseanne.

Why isn't 3rd Rock edited if The Cosby Show is and maybe Roseanne? They're all Carsey-Werner shows. Does Carsey-Werner honestly think 3rd Rock will make more money than Cosby and Roseanne?

I sent a really nasty e-mail to Anchor Bay regarding this rumour. It totally pissed me off as well. :angryfire :cuss:

I know. It seems like as all the really good shows are coming out, the fear of edited episodes is becoming a bigger problem.

I understand the music rights has to do with some of it. And that ticks me off. People are so greedy. I like money, too. But honestly if I was the person in charge of music rights, I'd make a deal to include it in the episodes, for the fan's sake as much as the quality of the show. A lot of music scenes end up being my favorites. Now I go back, and I panic to think about certain songs from certain episodes being cut out.

"Get a Life" is coming soon. From the "Best of" episodes released by Rhino, there is a lot of music in that series. I mean, the theme song itself is a song by R.E.M. "Stand". When USA reran the show, they did not include the "Stand" theme song. I hope it will be there for the DVD.

I'm trying to be optimistic about it. August just seems to be a pretty bad month for TV-DVD's. And when you think about it, a lot of the DVD's coming out this month are 1st season sets. Next month, we have a TON of later-season DVD's coming out, and I have pretty good faith that very little to none of the episodes will be edited. We've got the Brady Bunch S3, Taxi S3, MacGyver S3, and Cheers S6 sets coming out. Desperate Housewives S1 will be coming out in September also and I doubt that will be edited, since it has not been aired in syndication yet. Let's not forget about November- Three's Company S4, Golden Girls S3, Home Improvement S3, (possibly) Seinfeld S5 + S6, among the many other DVD's coming out that month all have very impeccable records. Well, there was that 10-second tag scene that was cut out in one of the TC sets, but really. That's only 10 freaking seconds. Nothing worth crying over. Now if 3 minutes was missing from EVERY SINGLE episode in the Three's Company sets, I would for sure cry.

While I agree that September-November will be bigger months, August has the most anticipated titles coming out, even if you don't like them. Where's that thread about the Curse Of August? EDITED TV-DVDs in 2005 should be added to the list.

I'm not as upset with Roseanne as I am TCS even though I am a bigger Roseanne fan. The first two seasons of Roseanne were just "okay" and then the show progressively got better in seasons 3-5 and then 6 was about as good as 5. I know they've already got season 2 prepared since it's coming in December, but maybe AB/C-W will get the message in time to get the rest of the sets fixed.

the more I think about it the more it seems like the companies that hold the music rights should be bending over backwards to make a deal - i mean it is a negotiation, if they dont make a deal they don't get any money, and they really don't lose anything by doing it; its not like its an easy format to "rip" songs off of or anything, and aside from theme songs and whatnot most of them will be incomplete or have some dialog over them...

I Love Lucy - The Complete 5th Season DVD Review:
http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ilovelucyseason5dvdreview.html

It mentions that the episode "Lucy and the Dummy" has been edited from it's original version. After watching the episode, the only thing I believe to be cut is this: There was a scene where a guy on stage talks about the movie "Guys and Dolls". He then says that they're gonna show a clip of it. It shows a movie screen and fades to black. I bet the thing that was cut out was the clip of "Guys and Dolls". They probably couldn't get the rights to the clip and took it out. As far as I know, the scene where the guy introduces the scene has been removed from the syndication episodes. So it was still a bonus to get that scene.

That's good to know. Because when I first read that the episode was edited I was ticked off. It's nice to know I was right, too. Even if I wasn't the first one to come up with that reason. ;)

I hope it's okay to post this here, if not please delete it :)

Pav I found out about the two episodes of Boy Meets World Season 3 that you thought might be edited, someone with the unedited episodes said this:

Grass Is Always Greener runs a little over 21 mins.
Pink Flamingo Kid about 21.30

So it looks like those were just shorter episodes :)

http://www.sitcomsonline.com/dvdreviews.html awesome logo by Seth. Anyone care to guess why he used "Season 2" on the logo and if that font for "DVD" Reviews" looks familiar? A very smart logo.

i think it looks awesome, as for why its "Season 2" - is that a sneaky way of hinting something to us? as for the "DVD Reviews" font - i dunno, is it from Joanie Loves Chachi?

Could it possibly be Night Court S2? That font looks similar to Night Court's...

The font is for sure Night Court's font. The season 2 means, our 2nd season in covering DVDs.

Nooo, if Night Court Season Two were coming, THIS would have been a "hint logo"

Remember guys, I'm the one that does graphics, and I'm usually about as subtle and understated as a brick to the face:

Great artwork as always, Seth!

And I agree with the poster who said the Petticoat Junction extras look great. I'm definitely considering buying it now, whereas I wasn't before.

BTW, Great review, Todd!

For any one of you guys...

Will MacGyver S3, Cheers S6, Brady Bunch S3 and Taxi S3 get reviewed? If so, when can I expect to see the reviews?

Thanks! :)

We review EVERY sitcom, so you can expect those. Expect those in the next few weeks. No MacGyver though.

excellent review Pav! - i can't wait to get it

however... Rolling Stone only gave Lost - The Complete 1st Season DVD TWO STARS - the reason?

"...the scrutiny allowed by this seven-disk set exposes the show's key flaw: Lost's characters are clearly either heroes or villains, thus removing the moral ambiguities that would make it deeply compelling."
